Summary: Remote controls do not work well at all
Review: I recently bought this DVD player and have noticed that the remote controls do not work very well at all. I can be 5 feet from the box and practically smashing the buttons down and nothing happens. I'm going to return it, especially in light of all the complaints on here about skipping scenes. I would not suggest this player to anyone else.

Summary: Sometimes works sometimes it doesn't
Review: I've only had this player for two weeks and I've not decided yet whether I'm going to return it or not but if it keeps performing the way it has been, I'll probably return it. You can play the same DVD more than once and at first it'll be fine and then it skips whole scenes at a whim. I've not played too many CD's on it so I can't vouch for that. I ordered this player because I have a Samsung burner/DVD combo player in my Dell computer and it works great. I cannot believe my computer DVD player outperforms a standalone player. I believe you used to be able to buy high quality electronic merchandise but it seems these companies just keep churning out crap and we keep buying it. What a shame.

Summary: Nearly perfect operation for nearly a year
Review: infrequently stops with dirty rental dvd, flawless operation with personal dvd's, most rentals for nearly a year. My first dvd, so I have nothing to compare it with, but at discount price, I have no complaints. Every brand has lemons, low raters must of gotten one.

Summary: Great Product
Review: Just got my Samsung DVD player today and tried all of its features out. Video cd's and regular CDs play even better than my old CD player. DVDs play in a snap and have excellent picture quality. Combined with component video ports and the excellent price, this DVD player is an excellent choice!

Summary: Overall good, except the remote controls
Review: Played the widest variety of formats, not as any other DVD player I could test, however it seemed responding slower than average when loading and during playing. Screen Fit button is probably unique at all for this DVD player and it is very useful.
I rated this product as four stars, because the remote controls were my the only disappointment with it, often they respond with delays or not at all from any distance/angle, also the joystick like button is bad, I wonder if a home theater master remote control will solve this problem, as I read in reviews many people feel like to switch to it, including me...

Summary: This DVD player is for real.
Review: The playback performance of this DVD player is outstanding. I have played many DVD-Rs on this unit and it never skips. Even ones that have many scratches.

While the Digest lable might be misleading, ( I like the word index)this preview feature of video and audio is excellent.

Not all current Samsung DVD models perform as well as this one.
Other models look simular but do not perform as well. I recorded a DVD-R, using the highest quality option that the Pioneer PRV9000 will record. Other Samsung DVD players would not play it back.

The only item I found this unit that was weak, is the round knob on the large remote control in the center, it is not always a positive action and somtimes you have to hit it 2 or 3 times to get the option wanted. That is the operation of the remote control and not a DVD player performance issue. I can overlook that minor issue.

A great product at a great price.

Summary: Better than my previous Samsung player
Review: The Samsung P421 is only my 2nd DVD player, but so far (after 3 weeks of ownership) it has performed better than my first one, the Samsung DVD-711. Unlike the Samsung 711, the Samsung P421 does not have frequent pauses when watching movies, and I can fast-foward thru scenes smoothly, without skipping. The Samsung P421 was easy to set up, and the manual is fairly well written. As a bonus, I was able to use the remote controller from my first DVD machine with this new one. For all its faults, the Samsung DVD-711 has an excellent remote control.

MAY 2, 2003 UPDATE: Since my last review, some DVD movies I have watched on this machine froze up, some discs have to be loaded twice before they play correctly, and the fast-forwarding feature is sometimes not very accurate. I don't know if it's the discs causing the problems or the DVD player itself. I should mention I never use rented discs. Having said all that, the Samsung P421 still performs better than the Samsung 711, my first DVD player, but there have been some minor annoyances.

Summary: Not worth buying at any price
Review: This device worked as advertised out of the box. My 8 year old likes the smaller second remote. This player even works on CD that my previous 2 CD players had trouble with. We have seen several DVDs and it worked perfectly. I like the fast forward capability of selecting different speeds. It is not as fluid as a VCR, but is a tremendous improvement over my older DVD player. Works great, sounds great, got it on a Gold box, great value. Samsung is a 6 sigma company, hopefully my player lasts many years. We'll see.
