Summary: Buy this player!
Review: This is a great DVD player. With most electronics you get what you pay for, however with this DVD player you get more than you pay for. Much of the inner working can be found on the high-end sony players, such as dual lasers one each for CD and DVD. Everything from the sleek looks of the player to the quality of sound and picture are top notch. The only complaint I have is the lip synch problem, but I called Sony and they picked up the DVD player from my home and are in the process of repairing it, at ZERO cost to me. The customer service was very friendly and helpful. Every piece of electronics equipment I own is Sony, and I have yet to find a reason to buy another brand.

Summary: Exceptional DVD Player
Review: I built my home theater 6 years ago and this is my first DVD player. I conducted extensive research and chose the Sony DVP-S550D. I am overwhelmed beyond words. Keep in mind that if you do not have a relatively new mid-to high-end A/V receiver, you will not be able to enjoy the full features of this DVD player. My 6-year old top-of-the-line Nakamichi A/V receiver just did not have the inputs necessary for the S550D so I purchased a new Marantz SR-18 A/V receiver. The S550D has component video and digital outputs as well as direct-out 5.1 channel sound so your A/V receiver should have these capabilities. The video and audio quality are truly exceptional in both Dolby Digital and Lucasfilm THX surround. I can assure you that you will not need to go to movie theaters again after you watch movies on the S550D.

Summary: AWESOME DVD PLAYER
Review: I purchased this unit about two weeks ago in FLA. Needless tosay the lip sync problem never appeared and the serial number andfirmware confirm that I am safe! The image on this puppy is abolutely amazing. You should use component connections to really appreciate the video quality. I already have a dolby decoder on my amp but the audio has greatly improved with this player. The features are awesome (gotta love being able to load an image as your default screnn). Overall, top-notch player for a decent price. I highly recommend it!

Summary: I'm Speechless
Review: I absolutely love this Sony product. I have been shopping for about a year now for my first DVD player and I finally decided on this one. It has left me speechless. I have a 32" JVC TV, and Kenwoods "Home Theatre in a box" system (which is Dolby-DTS ready). When I brought the Sony DVPS550D home, and hooked everything up I was amazed at the MONSTER I had created. The first movie I bought was of course the Matrix, and I can't tell you what it sounds like. I can just describe it to you in 2 words.....EARTH SHAKING. I love all the features that comes with the DVD player, and I have not experienced any Lip Sync problems at all. I highly recommend it to anyone.

Summary: A Can't Miss DVD Player
Review: The Sony DVD-S550 is a great buy for first and second time DVD player buyers alike. It offers a tremendous combination of features and performance at a very reasonable price. I had a year and a half old Panasonic DVD player that decided to stop working and I realize now that it really did me a favor. Seeing and hearing movies on this Sony has really opened my eyes and ears to all that DVDs can offer. I mention ears because as amazing as the video quality is, the sound quality is what really blows me away (and you don't need a humongous sound system to appreciate it). You will not be disappointed by this product! It provides very near the quality level of the Sony Reference DVD-S7700 (at half the price) and features (inc. a jog dial remote) that put it over the Sony DVD-S530 (at least in my book).

Summary: Forgetting Some Basics....
Review: Just received this player for Christmas. Marvellous! Page 7 of the manual, though, says you can't connect the player to a TV which does not have a video input connector. I have an old Sony 13" Trinitron with an antenna connection only. Nothing in the manual gives any guidance as to how to hook this up. There's nothing about accessories. Amazon's DVD buying guide doesn't mention this issue in the section on video hook-ups. Someone asks about it on the Amazon discussion board, and there's an incomplete answer about needing an adapter. What one? How much does it cost? So after looking all over on Amazon for 2+ hours, I guess I'll just call the electronics store....

And Sony's remote doesn't include a TV mute button. No button for muting! Other than omitting these basics, I'm sure the machine will be first-rate, whenever I figure out how to connect it....

Summary: The player Kicks a$$!
Review: After shopping for months and months, i dicided to get this sony model, and i don't regret it one bit. This picture is crystal clear, and the remote makes it worth the price of admission. I paid 399 for it at circuit city (sorry amazon!) Go out and but this one now!

Summary: Had mine for a week now
Review: No lip sync troubles, best picture of any DVD player I have auditioned so far. I tested 13th Floor, Goldeneye, Tomorrow Never Dies and Titanic. Go DVD and when you are forced (and I mean FORCED) to endure VHS, you will think you need glasses while watching the tape. This is an outstanding player, no lip sync issues whatsoever, in fact it seemed better in that respect than the $800 Mitsubishi unit I almost bought. The sales guy steered to me to the Sony unit, said after seeing them every day, he bought the Sony. So did I. The clarity is exceptional, features are full and easy to use. Cinema sound does a passable job of simulating surround, at least until I hook up my surround speakers. The remote is well designed with the most important buttons placed in easy finger reach and made larger than the less frequently used buttons. Most of the features are available at the front panel, and the display is easy to see form across the room. On screen displays can be utilized in wide screne movies without interfereing with the picture. Still frame and frame save is a cool feature. The unit is well laid out and near perfect. You would have to spend several hundred dollars more on others units to achieve the 550's picture and sound quality. Highly recommended

Summary: Plagued by power sync problem
Review: I was very pleased with the player for the two weeks it actually worked. Then the power supply problem set in. A slow decline. And instead of banging on the thing to get it going, I've decided to send it back. Wouldn't have expected an expensive Sony unit to have this problem.
