Summary: Great Player
Review: This is a great player with all the important features. I have not experienced the lip-synch problems other have referred to even though I've watched over a dozen movies. I think this flaw is over rated and possibly only exist in the minds of those that expect it to occur. It does have slow motion even though one of the other reviews reports that it doesn't.

Summary: Great player...except for the infamous Sony lip-sync problem
Review: The 530 is an excellent player, but it suffers the from the same lip-sync problems that affect the 550 and new 330 players. It's not a huge problem, but is annoying. When you get it you will know, it's not subtle. Kind of like watching a dubbed movie. Fortunately, the problem does not happen often and is completely random. It may show up about an hour or so into any movie. Pressing stop then play re-syncs the sound and play resumes as normal for the rest of the film. Generally sales clerks know little about the problem and will most likely plead insanity, but Sony has finally come forward and has semi-acknowledged the problem. They are accepting e-mails from disillusioned customers. (How could such a great player have such an obvious flaw?!?) Sadly, no fix yet. Even the newer units with firmware 1.800 as opposed to 1.500 have the bug. Other than this little snag the Sony players are great and do have the best picture of all the brands.

Summary: A Great DVD player at a great price!
Review: I don't think you will find another DVD player that has so many features at such a reasonable price (at least not in current markets). There was an older Sony version (S300)that did not come with the digital encoder and cost about $50.00 more. Of course, you don't get the DIVX feature, but those will most likely become obsolete anyways. Besides, DVD movies are much better quality and I prefer to keep a collection. So, if you are thinking of buying a DVD player, this would be a good choice. You have the Sony name to back it up and besides, once you use a DVD player, you will never want to go back to VHS tapes. Plus, DVD movies are so reasonable--check out Amazon.com's great DVD prices in their Video section!

Summary: Beware the lip-synch problem
Review: Beware that this model (and apparently the 550) exhibit an intermittent lip-synch problem where the sound gets a fraction of a second out of synch with the video, making it look like a poorly dubbed foreign movie.

Sony's warranty center confirms this problem but as yet offers no solution to owners such as myself.

The Amazon review guidelines say I'm not allowed to include a URL in the review, so you'll have to search for the smr-forums web page yourself. Forum 6 contains topics on the 530 and 550 that discuss this lip-synch problem.

I've watched about 5 movies so far and this problem has happened twice. This problem aside I think the player is fine. The digital audio decoding and auto audio track selection are all that you could want, and the virtual 3d is a fun addition if you only have 2 speakers. The remote can be programmed to run other manufacturer's TVs. Because playing a dvd requires using arrow keys for menu selection, it can be challenging to make your existing universal remote useful with this or any dvd player.

Summary: Excellent except for lip-sych bug
Review: This is in all respects a top of the line DVD player, except for the intermittent lose of lip-synch. This happens on my machine about once a week. You stop and restart (the 530 starts where it was stopped unless you hit stop twice) and the problem goes away.

After denying the problem, Sony has emailed some owners that they are looking into the problem. Go to deja.com and search rec.video.dvd for "530" to see more details on the problem.

Again, this is a nearly perfect DVD in all respects but this one.

Summary: The Best in it's class
Review: Used with a complete system of any kind, specially a Sony System, this DVD player delivers a great quality sound and cideo clarity. Dump your old VCR, DVD is definetly it.

Summary: This baby rocks the video world
Review: When I brought this bad boy home, my buddies Mikey F. and Billy C. couldn;t believe the quality and the price! They said, "you got it at Amazon? No way!"

The audio quality is fabulous and the smooth scan feature is the only way to speed through the dull parts of movies.

This boy and his friends give it two big thumbs up (Billy doesn't have a thumb).

Summary: Excellent DVD Player
Review: Used in combination with my 32" Sony Trinitron TV, the movie experience with DVD is far superior to VHS. Ease of use is a definate plus with this player.

Summary: awesome entry level DVD player!
Review: If you have a small TV (27" or smaller) then don't bother spending more on a DVD player. This player is loaded with features that were not normally found on the older players, like on board Dolby Digital decoding and DTS. Plus, you get component video out and a S-video connection (plugs right into recent model Sony TVs). It works well, and the remote has easy access to "subtitle" and "angle" changes. If you have a low end receiver like mine, which only supports Dolby Surround, the S530D will downmix the audio to provide the best sound.
