Rating: Summary: PLEASE pay a bit more and get a decent DVD Review: I agree with all the reviewers who give this 1 star (because there is no category for zero stars!)I got this from a friend. She had bought it last year and from the beginning had MULTIPLE problems. When playing DVD's it freezes, skips, and occasionally doesn't want to let them out! She went back to where she bought it and they told her it was the connections and she needed better cables and a modulator. She went ahead and bought all that even though the cost was as much as the DVD player--but hey she's persistent. Unfortunately it still did the same thing. It drove her crazy. She took it to her church's youth room. It drove them crazy. Then she gave it to me and now its driving me crazy! The eject button works a small percentage of the time, its incredibly loud sometimes making all sorts of whirring, buzzing, and bumpy noises--as if a bunch of gnomes were in their hitting it with hammers! Irritating! The remote is awful and often doesn't work either. To my friend's credit she told me about all the problems and her attitude was "hey, its yours. PLEASE take it". Not being one to refuse a gift (especially of a DVD player!)I brought it home and hooked it up. It played the first 4 DVD's just fine. Then it started freezing up, skipping, and just generally doing what all the other reviewers have said it does. Bottom line: You know this product is not worth the money if I have come on amazon.com specifically to say how bad it is--because I didn't even pay for it! Spend a bit more and get a quality player. You won't be sorry.
Rating: Summary: Worked well for about 2 months. Review: Wanna know why this product is so cheap? Because it won't work in a couple of months. I just went to watch a movie, and the picture is in black and white ONLY. NO COLOR. I called Apex, and they agreed that it was defective, and now want ME to pay the shipping + handling, in order to send it to them. Apex is going in the trash can, and now I'm off to buy a REAL player.
Rating: Summary: 6-month rental Review: The thing worked relatively well for about 6 months but it will no longer play DVDs. Audio CDs and CD-Rs of MP3s still work. From the beginning it had a one-second freeze in the display once or twice per movie. The default display is far too bright, making it difficult to even see the menu selections on some DVDs. You can adjust the brightness, but it resets with the next movie. I called APEX Customer Service and they suggested using a DVD lens cleaner or I could send it in for repair with a [$] labor charge.
Rating: Summary: Still works beautifully after 200 hours of use Review: When I used this machine for the first time, I was so delighted that I jumped right into Amazon[.com] and wrote my happy review. I am back just to say that the Apex AD-1200 has not failed me in any way in these past 6 months of use. The picture and sound are still crisp and clear, and I have experienced no mechanical failures whatsoever.
Rating: Summary: Fine for what I use it for Review: Somewhat like some of the other comments this player is working well to play a movie two or three times a week. It plays the CD's through the stereo TV adequately as well. The kids have managed to dislodge a spring that pulls the door closed and I may have to give some thought to opening the cabinet and resecuring that. Until then I will just give the door a flip and close it manually. I generally agree with the comments of "you get what you pay for". However, if your six year old knocks it off the shelf it won't survive regardless of how much you pay for it. I feel somewhat the same about furniture at this point. Grape juice is unaware of how much the new sofa cost.
Rating: Summary: Basically, you get what you pay for. Review: Apex DVD players are made for the most budget conscious of consumers, but my philosophy on buying electronics stands firm: If you're going to get one, spend a little extra and get a good one. The Apex AD-1200 is a tough recommendation even at the low price. The strength of this DVD player is simple: It plays DVDs. For people who will only watch a DVD occasionally, that is not a problem. It offers good picture quality and decent sound quality. Surprisingly, it plays VCDs and MP3s rather well, which means that those burned CDs that won't work on your stereo will most likely work here. Basically, you can expect a minimal level of performance from this particular DVD player. But the problems with this model are plentiful. The biggest flaw is the design. This DVD player is light, and feels cheap. Note the absence of a digital display on the player. Also, repeated pushing of the buttons can result in them falling out, so be careful of how hard you press the buttons. Worse yet, the player is loud and clunky. This clicks, hums, and rattles all through the movie. It is like a CD-ROM trying to read the disk. Having said that it is functional is not so true in the long term. As you would expect from a lower-end appliance, the Apex DVD player will stop working properly after a while. Often, the picture will freeze while the player tries to read the disk, and there are certain DVDs that it cannot read at all. This is a big annoyance, and a good reason to steer clear of this player. Buying a DVD player is never an easy decision, but choosing one strictly for the price is not a good idea. Most likely, you'll spend more having to buy a new one to replace the Apex brand when it breaks down. Spend a few extra bucks and get a good one instead, and avoid the headaches.
Rating: Summary: Broken in Shipping Review: I wish I could give the Apex DVD player a better performance rating, but given that it was broken in shipping with the door to the DVD player hanging on by a thread...I am forced to give it a rating of one. I'll compile a different review if the replacement DVD is operational.
Rating: Summary: Nice functions, but not very reliable Review: Owned the player for about 6 months, and it's already unable to read many DVDs. When it was new, it played everything, except for VCDs. Apparently, earlier versions played VCD, but later versions did not. Best feature for me was the ability to play a CD-R full of digital pictures from a PC. It just found all the files and played all the pictures as a slide show. The DVD video quality (S-Video) was only so-so.
Rating: Summary: Should have listened to what I read!!! Review: Well, I guess I get what I pay for. Player just keeps opening and shutting the door with this grinding sound over and over. Never reads a disk. Piece Of ...!!!!!
Rating: Summary: spend the extra [money] and get a name you can depend on. Review: I'm not going to write too much. I just wanted to warn anyone who is considering buying this machine. There is obviously a reason why it's the least expensive one in the store. It skips, makes this aweful vibrating sound and has ruined at least one of my DVD'S. Some stores give this unit away if you buy a Projection TV or something similar. DVD Players have come down in price drasticly. Spend the extra [money]or so and get a better brand. You'll end up saving in the long run because you'll need to pay that much to replace your DVD'S.
