Summary: Solid player, not made in Japan though
Review: A solid and affordable DVD player. Does not seem to have progress scan, but on most standard TVs that doesn't matter. Progress scan matters only when you have HDTV, at least that's my understanding. On my Sharp 20" the Sony outputs clear video images. My unit was made in Malaysia, not Japan, though, so I hope the quality will prove itself over time.

Summary: An excellent entry level DVD player
Review: After comparing the Sony NS325B to a lot of different brands and their features, such as the Panasonic S25K, I found it less generous on features, but just as reliable on multiple format decoding, and more stable on quality and longivety.

It's very attractive with it's slim casing, and even though they are small at first notice, all major function buttons are ready to use manually on the from panel display. It's nice to see that they use a minimal of text, signage, etc on the front of the player, so it looks a lot nicer! The remote is a dull grey, but all the functions are easy to use-small buttons though!

The 'Precision Drive 2' helps compensate any skips or disc errors, if there are any, while watching movies. Also, it has an 'optical output' that will really magnify digital quality sound with a 5.1 setup. Even if you are currently using analog, sound still sounds unbeleivable. Great sound decoding job there Sony!

Component video is also an option for a much more direct feed, which give my movies the best image! Other goodies, such as block noise reduction, and 24-bit digital processing for amazing decoding, bring out colours and outlines of images amazingly. We threw in 'The Abyss' to see just how smooth and rich the 'blues' were since half of the footage is shot underwater. The blue colouring had next to no bleed at all, and the richness of the colours didn't get smudgey.

Get this! We even switched/used only two main channel speakers (left, right) instead of the whole package for a few minutes, and even turned the reciever to a simple two stereo channel function (non surround), and the DVD player's decoding still did an amazing, crisp job as Ed Harris snuck behind Michael Biehn quietly in 'The Abyss'. You could hear the water drops and chains so lifelike. I honestly closed my eyes and smiled, listening to the amazing clarity. Even without the surround enhancement, I could still feel an openness of sound! Way to go Sony!

The only thing it doesn't have that would have been better, since we're getting a projector, is 'progressive scan'. Still, this is only our first player, and even without progressive scan, it still looks great. The Panasonic S25K is a great player as well. It's missing S-Video, which I find a shocker, but has component video output (whew). Also, there is no optical output for audio. But then again, Panasonic does equip it's baby with 'JPEG' and 'progressive scan' capability.

For the comfort, I'd rather have my player read the majority of formats, but have a couple less toys. And with a 'Precision Drive 2' onboard, watch out skips and scratches-you probably won't get to screw up our movie watching.

Summary: terrible product
Review: Hate it! - I bought my Sony DVD player about 6 months ago, worked great then out of the blue I kept getting "cannot play" errors. It will play music CDs or video CDs but NOT DVDs. Called the Sony help desk, they had me unplug it for 2 minutes, plug it back in, then insert a DVD - same message. Their response was that for 39.99 and shipping they would give me a replacement "refurbished" unit. For that price I bought a Zenith on sale.

Summary: Cannot recommend
Review: I bought one based on ZDnet reviews touting this unit's video clarity. While it did have very good video quality and sound, when I played the second brand new DVD in it I heard an intermittent chattering sound. I decided to let the movie play, but after 40 minutes the movie started skipping and breaking up. When I removed the DVD, I found it scratched beyond use. I returned the unit and got another brand. This unit could have just been an isolated lemon, but "once bitten, twice shy".

Review: I hate my Sony DVD player. Worked great for the first six months, but now I receive the message "Please insert disc" when I put in a DVD. If I can get the player to work by repeatedly inserting a DVD, the player skips from chapter to chapter and breaks apart when trying to read the DVD. I am surprised to find a substandard product from Sony. I have repeatedly purchased Sony TV's and various other products without incident.

Review: I have a Panasonic RV31 which is supposed to be very good. Well all of the sudden it starts giving me a no disc error or can't read this type of disc when I know the disc inserted is correct. I am very happy you reported this problem with the Sony and Panasonic models before I broke down and bought a replacement. This is the third DVD player I've had to buy. Why can't they just make products that work and last for a change? Thanks for the info. Other than the sudden not working problem that started with the Panasonic (bought it August 2001 -- no more warranty) it has done a good job.

Summary: Decent DVD player
Review: I have a sony KV-27FS100 TV. I do not need a progressive scan DVD player for this TV. But I did want component video out feature. So this DVD player was a good match for me. It plays DVD/CD/VCD/MP3s. I like the smooth scan as well as simulated surround sound features. It is quiet but occasionally I do hear some noise. So giving it 4 stars instead of 5. I would say it is a good entry level DVD player.

Summary: Beware Sony DVD players
Review: I have the 560 model. It started giving me Sony's version of the "no disc" error, which I am now learning is a common malfunction in many players. This occurs when the player can't read the inserted disc and tells you INSERT DISC. On Sony players, it's called a C 13 00 error.

When this happened to me a few nights ago, I searched the internet for anything I could find related to this error code. It turns out that not only the 560, but many other Sony models, have so predictably suffered from this defect that there are huge anti-fan clubs of people out there who now hate Sony.

I was on Amazon searching for a replacement player when I saw that other manufacturers players suffer the same problem. Two separate Panasonic owners who had the "no disc" error on their players wrote in their bad reviews "Tomorrow, I get a Sony. I should have done that in the first place." It makes me sad.

Don't get a Sony. The reputation for quality I used to have in my head about Sony is completely destroyed after reading all the nightmares people have had with this error and with customer service.
