Summary: Didnt work after a 2 month use...
Review: I thought this dvd player was a great buy since it had component output for my HDTV screen (which was also a Philips)...needless to say, the people who reviewed this were right: bad quality product. This one just started freezing and then finally lost the picture...I never touched the configuration section so it had to be something internal. I decided that it was cheap enough to let go...I guess I'm back to buying a Pioneer player instead....

Summary: What CAN"T this thing do?
Review: I wish I could say I researched this before purchase, but we grabbed it at [a store] and have watched the price drop consistenetly since. But we aren't complaining because there is little to moan about when it comes to this kick-a-- player. It plays all makes of CDR and DVD movies thrown at it so far. The Phillips CS dept tells me it can only play +DVDRW, but from what I have seen... there is no limit to its potential, making this one strong player.
You decide, but the only complaint I have is the fact that you have to push the Progressive Scan button (next to the DVD disk tray) to engage the feature. To make it even more fun, Phillips neglected to design an easy to read indicator to tell you its on besides going three menus deep. But really, what ... do you want, a porta-let in your lazyboy? Get off your bums and move a little. Unique features that I love: the scene skip to miss the start which many DVDs cannot skip/sound selection DTS to Dolby without any menu delays/and 3X zoom funstion ( a great benefit for photo viewing) , and its all done from the miniscule remote that is the first one to be usurped by a multi-brand remote anyway.
The MP3 capability is nice with menu options, but is limited in no "random" and length of alpha/num characters it can display. Newcomers to this technology must read th eentire manual before enjoying the full benefits, as one or two miskeyed menu entries may override all your button pushing (like not having "film" selected when running progressve scan).
Needless to say, we never took it back as the generous return policy allows, and I have moved my CD player elsewhere as my compenent rack is minimized once again.
Oh, one final note, it is usually a good shopping policy to go with one of the designers of the format (DVD) you are playing. Phillips /Sony are the main players (I have heard of many bad compatability issues concerning the finicky Sony players/recorders)

Review: My Philips DVD Player 724 "malfunctioned" (that's the term the tech help line used)after approximately a dozen uses. I personally think that is just a stock answer the tech help line gives because they don't want to bother to help you they just want to charge customer to replace it.

Naturally I missed the no charge exchange warranty date by about a month-Purchased it Jan. 24, 2003- malfunctioned May 30, 2003. Have to pay $$ to exchange for another one that may work.

I would not deal with Philips-the products stink and so does their warranty.

Summary: My experiences with Philips DVD724
Review: My Philips DVD724AT died approximately 4 months after buying it, right after the warranty expired. It simply stopped working one day out of the blue. Before it quit working, my main complaint was the output volume level was far too low, whether or not "dynamic range control" was enabled. Needless to say, I will not be replacing it with another Philips.

Summary: Absolute Junk
Review: Never buy Philips.
My Kids bought this for me last Father's day and now it won't load, the drawer pops open, closes at random. "One year limited warranty " tranlates to after 90 days I have to pay a "reduced fee" to replace one piece of junk with another. I also have a Toshiba DVD player that's 2 years older cost less and has never missed a beat. The lesson seems clear.

Summary: It does have 5.1 output, but not 6 jacks!
Review: Referencing the review from R Jobs from NY , USA below (or above?), the player DOES have 5.1 DTS and DD output, but via the coaxial digital and Tos-Link digital jacks. You need a DTS or DD receiver with these inputs in order to use the 5.1. It does not have a discrete output for each of the 5.1 channels (ie, you won't find 6 jacks on the back labeled 5.1 Surround).
