Summary: Disappointing
Review: Before I Ordered the DVD724AT I did some research at the Philips website. After recieving my player, I discovered that Philips dosent have (at their web site)the correct specifications as to what features this DVD player has. For one, this DVD unit DOES NOT have the 5-Disk resume feature that is posted at the philips web site, along with many other online retail sites. And two, the unit DOES NOT have a Built-in dolby digital decoder, which was also posted at the site.
I Just wanted to clearify these issues with anyone who is interested in buying this product, before Philips updates their databases.

As for the quality of the product. It seems very well built and does have a lot of features. But some how im disappointed

I hope this review helped you

Summary: Dolby Digital / DTS Decoders not in this unit
Review: For those of you who are wondering about the debate regarding whether or not this unit has built-in Dolby Digital and DTS decoders... The answer is no.

This unit does (like pretty much all DVD players), have digital outputs that allow it to connect to your receiver with built-in Dolby Digital / DTS decoding.

But, if you're looking for a player that decodes those formats, and provides the 5.1 channels of sound in the form of RCA audio jacks, then you need to look elsewhere.

Philips model DVD Q35 does include a built-in Dolby Digital / DTS decoder. (That model is also known by the designation: DVDQ35AT )

Summary: Great buy
Review: Got more than I bargained for -- and no, that wasn't supposed to be sarcastic -- when the pimply guy at The Good Guys! tried to sell me this machine, which was more expensive than the model I wanted. Good thing I followed his advice. I've owned this DVD player for about 4 months now, and it is practically rock-solid.

Pros:
- Plays most anything I put inside: DVDs, CDs, CD-Rs full of mp3s, CD-Rs full of jpgs, CD-Rs full of mpgs (a little iffy, but that's fine).
- Chapter transitions are smooth, even on dual-layer DVDs.
- Picture and sound are nicely sharp.
- A directory shows titles of mp3s/jpgs, though unfortunately the names are in 8.3 format and are therefore truncated.
- Very easy to set up (both in terms of cables and the system menu), even for a beginner like me.
- Sleek silver body.
- A nice surprise: a built-in PAL to NTSC converter!
- There's also another (unlisted) surprise, but you'll have to look around the web to find it. =)

Cons:
- The remote is rather small.
- Stutters, but very rarely, between tracks on some music CDs.

Summary: Better alternatives available
Review: I bought one of these but had to return it since it would freeze up and/or stutter while playing the second layer (about an hour or so in) on most of my DVD's. The player seems cheaply made and the features are not that great. The remote, in particular, is very flimsy, with tiny buttons that you can't read in a dimmed room. Afer returning this, I got a JVC XV-S500BK for about the same price and I'm much happier with it.

Summary: Philips... NEVER AGAIN!!!!
Review: I bought this product to go along with our HD big screen because was told that this was a great model. We paid $140 for it in January of 2003. worked fine. We maybe played 5 to 6 DVD's in it over a period of 5 months and went to pop in a DVD and NOTHING..No power to it at all. Wouldn't open or do a single thing. Took it back to Best buy where we bought it and they said we can sent it out but it will cost you. Came home and called Philips and they told me after 90 days they wouldn't repair or exchange for free. BUT if I want the will replace it for $39.99 and you have to pay shipping to get it there and back. So for another $60 I can get a new one. What a bunch of crap. Customer service is a joke!!

Summary: No output jacks no decoder
Review: I couldn't even use this thing because IT DOES NOT HAVE A DOLBY DIGITAL DECODER BUILT IN...don't believe the hype! Philips couldn't even begin to give me support on this issue, because their staff consists of complete idiots.

Summary: You won't go wrong with this one...I think
Review: I have owned this player for over 12 years and have not had any problems with it at all. It is also the first and only DVD player I have ever owned. I would however agree with some of the other reviewers' complaints about the remote (apparently, size does matter...), but beyond that one small issue, I have been nothing but pleased with the quality (and overall value) this machine has delivered.

The first DVDs I watched were of The Sopranos and I must admit that there was a lot of explicit language and violence, though I am not sure if it would be fair to place the blame squarely on Philips. Since then I have watched many other movies (some purchased, borrowed, and others rented - though not from Blockbuster I might add), and there have never been any problems with the audio or video quality. It is still early but it looks to me at least as though this was a wise purchase.

I hope you found this review helpful, and for those of you wondering whether or not I have been entirely truthful, I must admit to you that I have not in fact owned this player for 12 years. The reality is that it has been closer to three or four months.

Summary: Philips DVD724AT
Review: I just purchased this unit a few days ago. My pro's, average and con's follow:

PROS:
* The multiformat ability is this unit's best ability by far and the rason to buy. Plays everything you can throw at it inc SVCD, VCD, DVD-R, MP3, JPG's, ETC. (I haven't tried raw mpeg's yet but I saw some comment that it will play em).

* NTSC / PAL capability is built in as is "other" international disk capability. (see dvd enthusiasts websites to get detail on how to enable). This is another reason to purchase if needed.

* Price is good if you need the ability to play all of the aforementioned formats as few others can do this as well. If not, I'd prob buy a Sony as the picture quality is a hair better (see caveat below). If price is the all important consideration, get an APEX but be warned that multi format capability is hit or miss sometimes, even within same models of APEX(certain s/n ranges and dates of production are the way to be certain before purchase, both of which are on the box - see www.dvdrhelp.com)and that picture quality is worse.

AVERAGE:
* Picture quality so far is decent. It's certainly not poor but not exceedingly robust either as is my Sony NS-300. (As this unit is brand new, perhaps the few dvd's (3) I've played aren't the most optimum?).

* Remote is cheap like 90% of them out there. Don't expect much but I've also seen worse (APEX). The button locations are good and functional, just limited but they are pretty intuitive. No multi unit funcationality from what I can tell. Perhaps other Philips things can be controlled?

CON:

* IMHO the styling is poor. It's like a throwback to somthing I had 15 years ago. Some may go for it though, it's monolithic looking, very little texture or anything. Bland! On a scale of 1 to 10 the styling gets a 2 or a 3. It is nondiscrete though! Cool factor: ONE unless your going for that 80's look.

Summary: A very good DVD player at a good price.
Review: I purchased this DVD player back in May of 03 and it has been about a year and a half. I have had 0 problems with this player. I felt the need to write this review due to all of the negative marks that it had. I bought this since it was nice and cheap. Thinking that I would some problems due to the price I have been very pleasantly surprised. This DVD player has been great for me and I could not have asked for more considering the price I paid.

Summary: Where are 5.1 channel analog output jacks
Review: I read a review by tew02 from Southern California, USA saying this model (Philips DVD724AT ) has built in Dolby Digital Decoder and supports 5.1 channel analog output. This is claimed by even Philips and Bestbuy websites. I checked this model in BestBuy showroom but it does not have 5.1 channel analog output jacks. Does anyone know if these jacks exists on this model ? If not this model then is there any other DVD player of any good brand which has 5.1 channel analog output in approx. same price range?
