Review: After having the unit for one month, the remote stopped working. It took 3 months to get a new one. In the meantime, I could not use the unit...NO available buttons on the front panel, except for stop & play..What good is that? Now the DVD player will not play movies. The factory would not budge on the warranty and it is going to cost me $79.99 for them to exchange. I think that is rediculous since the unit has been bad since day one. No more Philips products for me...Beware of them.

Review: DO NOT BUY THIS DVD/VCR COMBO.!This is easily the worst electronics purchase I've made in the last 2 years. I returned the item after using it for 5 days. 1. The remote control is terriblely made. The numbers are not organized in standard format (1/2/3; 4/5/6; 7/8/9; 0). Instead they're laid out in two rows. It's absolutely terrible design. 2. It's impossible to program the VCR to record shows. The menu is nearly impossible to figure out even for a technically savvy person. I shudder to imagine my sister attempting to program a recording of her favorite show. 3. The LED display is so small that you cannot see it if you're more than 6 feet away. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!!!!!!!!!!!

Summary: review after one year
Review: First DVD unit and with space limited, went for the combo. Remote is not user friendly, hard to use. VCR and DVD worked fine. Programming the VCR once set, can not be turned off, even after recording is complete. Finally had to eject tape to restore basic operation. Now the bad news, after abut one year, VCR ate my tape. Rescued the tape, but VCR will no longer accept tapes. Either ejects them or will not load them. After reading countless reviews, not sure what to get as replacement.

Review: From day one had problems with it eating tapes and after 6 months vcr part has gone out completely. By the time you pay shipping and the fixed cost for exchange you can buy a new one. I myself will think twice before buying another philips product.

Summary: SKIPPING BAD DISK AREA
Review: Get used to seeing "Skipping bad disk area" and missing huge chunks of your movie. This was my 1st DVD player so I figured I was just getting a lot of bad DVDs. I finally tried playing one in a non-phillips DVD player and it was fine. The DVD player seems to konk out after about an hour of play. The screen gets pixilated, you get the above message, and then it locks up. Customer support has told me to get lost. This wasn't the exact model I got but judging by the other reviewers this is a problem common to all Phillips DVD players. Stay away from Phillips DVD players if you ever watch movies that are over 1 hour.

Summary: Great buy
Review: I bought this combo player in August so I could record the dvds that I rent. Well, it's January and I still haven't even bothered to try to record one. I got a digital camera for christmas which also records audio/video. I was so happy to find out that this dvd player plays "VCDs" because making music videos is a hobby of mine and I'm glad to be able to watch my videos on my 53" tv instead of the computer. There is a huge difference in quality between the cables used to hook it up to the tv. The 3 "composite video" cables is the best. Unfortunately, I had to buy them seperately for $30. It's definitely worth it though.

Review: I have had this item for 2 months now and have watched numerous DVD's on my 55" hdtv. Works like a charm and has great picture quality. I have not attempted to do any type of recording, or even use the VHS yet.
There is a switch on the back where you can choose progressive scan or normal. I only used the progressive scan feature. The main reason why I purchased this is because my HDTV is also a phillips (55PP9753). What I really need to get now is the home theather system. Very happy with it.

Summary: I get what I paid for
Review: I have to write a review since I felt one of the previous 2 reviews was a bit sweeping regarding ALL DVD players made by Philips. I bought this unit to replace an old VCR. I have only used it for a week, so my impressions may change in the future.
First: one of the prior reviews warned me about the remote control, so I expected problems. And that's why I only gave this product a 3 out of 5: the labels on the controller were hard to read, and the keys were not very intuitive, so I had to play with the keys a lot. In addition, the first-time set up did not work for me. But I was able to get into the setup menus later, so it was a minor annoyance at best.
Second, this is what I liked about this unit: it played a 2 hours long DVD movie with no problems. It also played a commercial Karaoke VCD with no problems. When I got to the page in the manual that claimed this player could read directories and JPEG files, I remembered that I had a CD-R containing a backup of my digital pictures. To my delight, the unit displayed all the pictures in the backup directory that I had burned on my Windows PC. There was a delay of a few seconds between photos, just like a slide show. The picture quality was superb, thanks to the JPEG format. Some dark photos showed up just fine on the TV screen. In addition, I happened to have a computer-made DVD (in DVD+RW format) of some old videos taken via a camcorder. The Philips played this DVD just fine, thank you. So I can view my computer-made DVDs on my TV now. Unfortunately, the Philips cannot improve on the quality of the videos taken: I was painfully aware of the jerkiness in these home videos!
Finally, some of you may not know, but you cannot play something in the DVD section and be able to record that show to the VCR section at the same time. To do that, you'll have to connect the signal to yet another VCR deck.
