Summary: No optical digital output, but has coaxial digital output
Review: I bought this player as a gift, so I have looked at the unit first-hand.

To the reviewer that stated it does not have an optical digital output - correct. However, the statement that you will have analog audio only and not digital - not correct!!!

This unit has a COAXIAL digital output. Most DD recievers will have inputs for both (coaxial and optical) digital inputs. Many early DVD players had both outputs. My recent Toshiba has both. Many recent Panasonic models had optical only, but for some reason (my guess is cost) this Panasonic unit went the other way (coaxial).

This is easy for newcomers to confuse and it's not helped by the fact that the Amazon description is wrong in stating that the unit has an optical digital output.

Just to note: it can stop a DVD and resume where it left off. I've seen various comments recently about some DVD players (not necessarily this model) that were claimed to not have this feature. I have no idea if this was user error or what, but I tested this and it worked fine.

This appears to be a good basic unit for the price. The progressive scan is a bonus for those that have the TV to take advantage of it.

Summary: Panasonic Died After Two Years
Review: I didn't purchase this one, but I would have to give the Panasonic DVD players a BIG Thumbs DOWN. I received the PANASONIC DVD-RV31 as a gift from Amazon.com two years ago. After limited household basic use, it just stopped working. I received an error message (HO2) and the Panasonic Service told me to go to a local repair shop. It will be cheaper to buy a new Player, so that's what I plan to do. I would strongly suggest another brand of DVD player (JVC is what I have for other components with much success). I'll never get Panasonic again!!!!

Summary: Excellent video quality
Review: I got this as a second progressive scan ("PS") DVD player and have been very impressed. The price is right, and the overall quality of the player is very good, especially compared to lesser-quality brands like Apex and Samsung. What truly stands out is the video output quality. When connected to a digital TV monitor (EDTV or HDTV) the details from many recent DVDs are just incredible. BTW there's no point hooking up this player (or any PS-capable player) to an old analog NTSC TV since the latter cannot take advantage of the PS signal. Progressive Scan means each time the TV displays a frame of the image, all the lines are displayed, as opposed t NTSC's "interlaced" technology. Not only does PS give smoother, clearer motion pictures, but clean paused pictures as well. The Panasonic DVD-S25K is an outstanding PS player to own.

Summary: If you still have an old TV......
Review: I have an old TV so I had to buy a modulator (a small box that conects cords) since it wasn't compatable with the DVD player. The picture quality isn't that great. The buttons on the remote to skip during a video are horrible. Either it moves really slow or too fast, like 30min. of video in 2 seconds. If you click the subtitles button during a movie, you only get the menu, not subtitles.

The most annoying thing is not being able to change the widescreen mode. I read the instruction book and went to the Video tab and saw that it was in Regular mode yet all the movies I watch I'm forced to see in Letterbox style where the picture only uses 1/3 - 1/4 of my screen!!!

Summary: A huge leap from my previous DVD player
Review: I have bought this player to replace a non-progressive one on a 47" rear projection set. The improvement is dramatic, but not, as I expected, in terms of the progressive scan, since I can hardly see a difference switching it on/off, but in terms of overall quality of picture and functionnality. Features like automatic aspect ratio, shifting the subtitles' position (too bad they can only bee shifted downward though) were painfuly missing on my previous Deawoo player.

Summary: Best DVD Player you can buy for the price
Review: I have seen many reviews for this product and it seems most of the bad reviews are from people who have no idea what they are talking about.

First of all, this DVD player will allow you to play any capable movies in TRUE DTS or Dolby digital surround sound. I have seen some sites claim it has optical digital inputs, which it doesn't. However, having experienced both coaxil and optical digital sound, I can hear little to no difference in the quality.

The main reason I purchased this player was to play DVD recordable formats and to have digital sound. Both my expectations have been met. I have tried several DVD-R and DVD+R recording formats and it has played all perfectly. CD-R's and VCDs also play perfectly.

As for the quality of Panasonic DVD players. Before this player I had another Panasonic DVD player that lasted me about 5 years with no problems what so ever. Maybe people have got a bad apple here and there. As for me, I have nothing but good experience with Panasonic equipment and would definitly recommend this player to anyone

Summary: Confident about this DVD Player
Review: I just purchased my fifth Panasonic DVDS25S. Based on multiple reviews, price, personal experience, and it's ability to play my home-burned DVDs (Nec ND-1100 +R burner), I purchased or recommended one for every member of my family. Amazon currently sells it for the cheapest price when you factor in free shipping and no tax.

Summary: I like the Panasonic
Review: I like the Panasonic name. I have had 3 panasonic dvd players and only got this to replace my other which went in over a year, mainly it was sitting in too cold of tempature(make sure you store them in room temp).

Like all Panasonics it set up in 5 mins and had a movie going, however, the drawback is that I was looking for S-Video(but not necessary as I have to convert it, mostly looking down the road) and Optical out, which this says it has, well it has Coaxial digital out, not Optical digital out, which is what makes DTS what it is.

I can't comment on the picture quality as I have it running thru a converter, but I wouldn't recommend this for HDTV's as there is no S-Video.

Summary: Plays for 20 min. then freezes
Review: I received this S25 for father's day. It played well for about 3 mo.Then it started freezing (error U11) which says disc is dirty.Cleaned it...samr thing happened. Tried all my DVD's and apparantly they are all dirty. Panasonic won't help me. Some people have advised me to use the CD cleaner to clean the lenses.I have never received H02 or any H errors. Please e-mail me with your input. Thanks Bluecat33@aol.com

Summary: Very Disappointed...2 defective units in a row!!
Review: I received this unit as a Christmas present, and used it 3 times in two weeks, then the unit failed to read any CD I tried to play. I re-read the owners manual and nothing worked. I then contacted Panasonic and their instructions failed as to what was wrong and it still was unable to read CD's. I then contacted Amazon and related my problem to them. Their customer service department was terrific and sent me a replacement unit (same model), which was used only twice and the same problem arose. I again contacted Amazon, who again were absolutely wonderful in helping me, said they would send me a prepaid label to return the second unit and would issue me a gift certificate for the purchase price of this gift. I cannot praise Amazon enough for their excellent customer support. I will think twice before I ever purchase a Panasonic product again, especially any of their DVD players. I will use my Amazon gift certificate to purchase a DVD player from another manufacturer, it certainly won't be a product from Panasonic. Keep up the good work Amazon...I will be a customer with you for a long time.
