Summary: If you have PAL DVDs and an NTSC TV, this is your Player
Review: I bought this player from Amazon based on information that it would convert PAL-encoded DVDs to work with US-based NTSC TVs. It does exactly that - I connected it to my Sony NTSC-only widescreen TV and I've played a bunch of German PAL DVDs on it. The conversion quality is excellent, with no signficant artifacts or noticeable distortion of the picture, and there is no lag between the audio and the picture. Plus, the price made it an easy decision.

The region-free code listed below works perfectly too. I searched the web and found lots of code-free DVD players advertised, all at high prices (including this one). They all implied a hardware modification was done, but I don't believe it's true. Why pay someone $200 for this same player just because they pulled it out of the box and entered the code for you?

The downsides: The player is made to its pricepoint - it's a cheap player, and it looks and feels that way. I don't expect it to last forever. I only gave it 4 stars, because even though it works fine the remote is cheap, filled with small buttons, and is extremely difficult to use in a dim or dark room.

Summary: Awesome!
Review: Great slim player. The Region Code Free mode via the remote control (9 9 9 9 0) works great. Although it's not in the spec, DTS passes thru the optical digital output fine and can then be decoded with your home theater receiver. At this price, what a steal!

Summary: Waste of Money
Review: This product is unreliable, difficult to hook up, jittery, and though I got a good deal for it, I would gladly pay more for a DVD player that wasn't built by a bunch of idiots. This DVD player will only work on certain TV sets, and when it does work it doesn't work very well. A sleek-looking design isn't worth paying money for if the product works like crap. A complete waste of time and money.

Summary: Great if it works (which it may not)
Review: I wish I had read the reviews and been warned!
I ordered this model from Amazon, and it worked for about 30 minutes, then it stopped working (it froze and always said 'Loading' and couldn't play any more DVDs).
I returned the player, but I really wanted this model because it's cheap and can play DVDs from other regions, so I bought the same model at Target.
The second one has worked great so far (about a week). The image quality (progressive scan, component outputs) is very good for the money, and you can hack the machine to play other regions. I hope it keeps working!

Summary: poor quility
Review: I bought this one form amazon.com, for some reason most of DVDs I played showed very poor picture quility though a couple are fine. I have to return it to Amazon.

Summary: Excellent player, suboptimal interface.
Review: This DVD player rocks. I've played VCDs, CDS, MP3 CDS, DVDS and they play flawlessly. Picture quality is excellent, and it's not as fragile as some of the other players I've owned when it comes to dealing with old, scratched, unclean disks. The interface could've been better. If the DVD player is switched off, pressing the eject button has no effect. When I press eject, I expect the player to switch iself on and eject the disk. The remote is not very well layed out and especially hard to operate in dark. The MP3 selection screen could have been a lot more useful. However, for the price, I am more than happy to live with some interface quirks.

Summary: Region free capable, but poor quality
Review: The region hack posted in other reviews DOES work, and the PAL to NTSC conversion works great, but on the 29th day I owned it, I started noticing artifacts on the picture (i.e. distortions) when I used the player.

If you buy this product, take note that several of the reviews posted mention serious quality flaws and poor customer service from Philips. Thank goodness I can still return this thing.

Summary: Codefree hack allows playback of PAL Region 2
Review: This is truly one awesome DVD player. I have bought two from Amazon already (First one cost me $80 and the second $75 after the price was reduced yet again). I bought this unit after I found a site on the Internet that explained how to set the unit to region free. I have a large collection of PAL region 2 DVDs from Germany. Another reason why I purchased this unit was due to its ability to convert PAL signals to NTSC internally. No need to buy a modified unit or an external converter. This baby does it on its own. The converted signal is excellent and surpasses my other units (one has an internal converter and another one needs an external converter). Definitely one to buy for anyone needing multi-region or PAL/NTSC capability.

Summary: Avoid Philips products entirely
Review: I will never buy another Philips product again. I have owned my Philips DVD player for approx. 4 months and it is now nothing more than a dust collector because IT DOESN'T WORK! Philips also has the worst customer service and warranty I have ever encountered in any industry.
It only plays when IT feels like it, which is few and far between. I keep getting a no disc error message, and it will not play new DVD's right out of the box. I called Philips customer service to have it fixed or replaced. That is an adventure in itself. First, you get someone on the line who can barely speak English and you can hardly understand. If you are past the 90 day warranty period, you have to pay $39.99 + shipping charges, and send it back to them. I can buy a brand new one for that price. And that is if only you have saved your receipt. No receipt, you get nothing but a big headache.
I told the customer service rep. that their products should last longer than 90 days, and she replies to me "you should have bought an extended warranty". What a bunch of crap.
Folks, save your money and never buy a Philips prodcut unless you plan on dying within 90 days, because thats all it will last or the warranty is good for.
Spend a few extra bucks and get a GOOD DVD player with a decent warranty.

Summary: Picture went out after 29 days
Review: This was initially the best DVD player I've ever owned, supurb
picture and sound and it played absolutely ANYTHING you threw at it. Every region disc, DVD-+R/RW, MP3's/CD-R's you name it.

It was playing fine until the 29th day when I attempted to fast forward to the next chapter, as I did the screen went blank. I spent three hours of my Thanksgiving evening trying to get the picture back - no such luck. The audio was no affected however. I don't know what happened, but it appeared as if the video portion just dissappeared and what good is a DVD player without a picture?

I wrote to Amazon and they sent out a replacement within eleven hours, great customer service!
Let's hope this one stands the test of time!
