Summary: Unbelievably Cool DVD Player!
Review: This dude rocks! I have always wanted DVD player that would play divx format - in fact this is the first DVD player I've owned because I had heard a while ago that divx would be supported in the near future - so I waited...until I saw this unit! It plays every media format advertised with no problem. It even read discs that I could not read on the PC that created the discs! It's just like a normal computer filesystem when you burn multiple divx movies or mp3's onto one DVD - you browse through the folders and pick which file you want, press play, blamo! I was skeptical about the slogan on the box (paraphrasing - "put any disc in, it'll read it!") but not now, simply awesome - especially at the price! The only thing I wish they would have done different is put a ff/rw button on the unit (you have to use the remote) and make the file menu easier to scroll page by page rather than file by file (1000 mp3's takes a while!) Still, for the price and functionality, definitely a solid 5 star rating. - Jason

Summary: Mine Lasted 5 months.... now dead
Review: This is a great little player and it does exactly what many of the reviews here say, but it will only last you a short time. I got exactly 5 months out of mine and now it's dead. Will not turn on, just flashes the red light on the on/off button. I had to remove my DVD with force so that is the end of that.
When I purchased this model there were reviews that said it would not work for very long and they were right. Hope all of you have better luck than I did.

Summary: A best divx player. A worst dvd player.
Review: This is a wonderful Divx player for sure. But its DVD play is terrible. Seriously, it is terrible. The resolution (the sharpness of images) is lower than others. Color is all blur. and it makes chunky pixellation sometimes. I have had 4 DVD players so far (1 non-progressive, 3 progressive). But this is the worst one(even worse than non-progressive one). Don't get me wrong. I love its divx play. it's as good as dvd movies. If you have lots divx movies, this is for you. But if you are serious dvd movie lovers but don't even know what divx format is, please look for other dvd player.

Summary: Excellent Learning & Social Tool
Review: This is an awesome machine -- I have used it for watching dumb stuff like
Friends and Seinfeld discs, as well as for learning from DVDs like "New Sex Now."

It works great, is easy to use, and I highly recommend it.

Summary: Plays nearly everything, even DATA DVDs
Review: This is an excellent player for the money and its much more versatile than some players costing 2 or 3 times as much.

One feature that I have not seen mentioned anywhere, including the user's guide: This player will read DVD+R and DVD+RW DATA discs. (I haven't tried DVD-R or DVD-RW data discs, but my guess is they will work too.) That means you can write multiple DivX or MPG movies to a DVD data disc and watch them by navigating through the disk directory using the remote control. That also means you can play DivX or MPG movies that are too large to fit on a single CD.

In addition, I've had no trouble playing MPG movies that are not in VCD or SVCD format.

You can't go wrong with this one.

Summary: Great DVD Player!
Review: This is the Best DVD player I have owned!

Summary: good player, just few settings will make it best player
Review: This is the best player i have ever come accross. im testing this product for past one week and im satisfied witht he features. It plays SVCD, CD, MP3, DiVX, DVD-r almost all. But while testing DiVX initially there was some with picture, like picture get disturbed when there is fast movement on the movei and audio-video Sync problem. But few setting has solved the problem. Another problem was, after copying .VOB file(drag n drop) to DVD-R, no audio is coming, but picture is clear. Can anybody help me

Summary: Begin watching those DiVX movies in style
Review: This unit is made for those electronics fans who want the most for the buck they spend like myself. This player is perfect if you have an average 25" tube TV, possibly with some stereo speakers and perhaps even with component video input. The player provides both stereo output, S-video output(which looks kinda like computer PS/2 mouse jack). Then there are 3 component outputs, which I didn't get to test, but you might be able to take advantage of.

Now, all the DiVX movies that I tried played almost flawlessly. One of the movies in DiVX 3.11 format showed notable image aberrations, with some parts of the frame looking as if they were shot on some grainy film. I guess the video chip couldn't keep up with the video bitrate, or the file encoding was corrupt. After pressing Stop and Play buttons didn't fix this problem, I tried pressing Menu button, then pressed Play back, and voila, the image became as clear as it was supposed to be.

One drawback I noticed is that version DiVX 3.11 movies support only 4x fast forwarding, while other DiVX movies(as well as DVDs) can fast forward at 8x, which is pretty good, but not as fast as the usual 32x for standard DVD players.

One time the player didn't want to read a CD-R with a small video on it, saying there was 'No Disc'. After I finalized the disk in Ahead Nero, the player was able to load and play the disk back.

I also tried a homemade DVD-R, which worked as expected, with all the menus/subtitles, you know, the whole "DVD Experience".

I have to add I was pleasantly surprised by how cool the player looked, with a nice bright LCD(which doesn't have a lot of information on it, just a playback counter; still, it's a nice improvement over my old cheapo Apex DVD player, which looks pretty dull without the LCD), a very thin sleek silver(though pretty large in width) case and a nice ergonomic remote control.

All in all, it's about time for you guys to shell out those $60 and start watching DiVX on a big TV screen. You won't regret buying this awesome affordable and quality gadget.

Summary: PHILIPS DVP642 WARNING to DVDR/W - DISCS/MOVIES OWNERS
Review: This unit plays divx 3.x through 5.x, svcd,vcd,mp3,cd,mpeg1 and mpeg2,dvdr/w+, but be forewarned it DOES NOT PLAY dvdr/w- discs.
You would think that PHILIPS with their technology and reputation would go this far in bragging about their product being able to play anything you throw at it but will not support dvdr/w- discs. I contacted customer/service help deptartment and technical department. Not only is there not a firmware to make this unit capable of playing dvdr/w- discs but PHILIPS WILL NOT support this format in the future for this unit if the format is decided to go to dvdr/w-.
Owners of DVDR/W- MOVIES... I suggest you get a back up dvd player APEX AD2600 $50 if you can still get your hands on one this model was discontinued, this unit supports everything but divx(mpeg4) movies, .mov and .avi formatted movies. My advice get you a dvd player capable of supporting dvdr/w+ and dvdr/w- discs. Consumers have no idea which standard will stay or go
and getting one that supports + formats only is taking a risk.

Summary: Convenience, Versatility and Affordability!
Review: Tired of dragging my notebook over to the TV every time I wanted to watch a DIVX file, I decided to give this player a try. To my delight, it played all DIVX, +R and +RW discs right out of the box with no quibble, BEFORE the firmware upgrade was applied. The quality of the DIVX playback depended on the quality of the encode, and an 80 minute movie compressed down to one 700MB CD is very close to DVD quality, IMO. This player is an awesome value, at $70, especially if you remember that the big selling point of this player is CONVENIENCE--being able to play a great variety of formats in one unit.
