Summary: No DVD-RW in VR format.
Review: I'm happy enough with this player since I wanted it mainly so I could play movies from my computer. It also plays DVD-R from my Sanyo recorder. BUT it does not play DVD-RW in the VR format. This was a disappointment. I had read that if a player will play DVD-RW, then it will play VR format. Note that Amazon does advertise that it will play DVD-RW. That may be the case, but like I said it will not play the VR format. I do love being able to play the Divx though.

Summary: just as promised
Review: i've thrown data discs with both video and mp3 on it in CD-R and
DVD-R format and it has not yet failed to play. backup DVD-R
copies play perfectly well ( xvid codec used to encode quite a
bit of what i have plays fine ). my only complaint is that the
menu is slightly clunky when dealing with data discs - you cannot,
for instance, navigate the menu while an mp3 is playing to skip
to another track .. you have to stop the currently playing song
first .. other than that, a very slim, light unit that performs
as advertised .. looks nice too!

Summary: Great DIVX player!!
Review: If you plan to use it as Divx player, you cannot find better deal than this. But if you only plan to use it as DVD player, then there are better players in the market.
I have used it for a month so far and I really like it a lot.
Plays pretty much every format and media.

Summary: Buy this DVD Player
Review: It has played flawlessly for me - Xvid , Divx, MPeg2 even DVD's I have mastered from SVCD by changing the header info - without video tear (unlike my APEX) - I love this DVD Player!!!

Summary: Great for the price!
Review: It is wonderful that it plays MPEG2 and DIVX. I have Beyond TV to record tv shows and this is the perfect player to allow me to watch these shows. I use MPEG VCR to edit out the commercials in minutes and then I can burn to disc. I don't have to render for hours to a dvd format. This player was just what I needed...and at such a great price!

Summary: This Player does support DTS
Review: Maybe there are units around that have different firmware, but my player plays DTS as well as DTS-Audio with no problem on a Pioneer VSX-D409 DTS/DD reciever. I tested Gladiator, Saving Private Ryan, etc... Still satisfied with this player, my only gripe after using it for almost a month is that FF/RW scan is not very fast.

Summary: Great Value
Review: Picked this player up, and contrary to a few reviews I've seen around it DOES play dvd-r discs. I've played ritek, fuji, and tdk dvd-r discs burned at 4x with no problem. I have not tried dvd-rw. It takes a sec or two longer to load discs than my other player, but for $69 with xvid and divx playback and the ability to enter a code via the remote to enable region free playback you can't go wrong (look around online).

My unit was set to component output by default and was black and white when i first turned it on using s-video, just change the output in the setup and it'll be normal for s-video use.

Summary: Simple DVD player with DivX support
Review: Probably the best DVD/DivX player for the money. Definetely not the best DVD player over all. It looks a little bit cheap, lacks buttons on front panel, remote is awkward, system menus lack functionality and glamour of other makes. Sound on all DivX's I played on out-of-the-box player was out of sync. Problem was solved by installing new firmware from Philips. Be prepared to have fun after you installed new firmware. Player switches to PAL and it takes some time to switch it back to NTSC.
This player is not the best choice for non-tech-savvy people.

Summary: MPEG playback quality leaves something to be desired
Review: The key frames are not handled well by this unit when playing MPEG4 DVD's, so the picture tends to cycle from excellent to fair every five to ten seconds. I don't seem to have this problem when playing back under Windows Media Player 9. Also file titles are truncated at 9 characters or so when displayed, so if your files all start with similar names you will have problems picking them out. Other than that I am impressed with the wide variety of formats it plays.

Summary: Best DVD/DivX Player (for the price!)
Review: The Philips DVP642 is truly superb at its price point. DVD playback is just as good as my older Onkyo DV-SP501 (at more than twice the price) and it can play DivX and XviD files (at almost DVD quality) as well as MP3's JPEG's and VCD's!

Unlike the experience of the reviewer from Erie, PA, my player does resume playing the DVD from the scene where you've pressed the stop button (of course if you press stop TWICE it will take you to the beginning of the DVD).

The unit is ultra thin (1.7" high) and stylish. Colors are vivid at its default setting but you have the option to tweak them if you deem necessary via a system menu, a feature that Philips calls SmartPicture. Video output is available for component video, SVideo or CVBS. For audio you have digital or analog output. You also have an option to set the video for your type of monitor 4:3 P/S, 4:3 Widescreen or 16:9. You may zoom in during playback on both DVD or DivX/XviD files. Resolution

The one weakness I can find is with the remote. It is a bit skimpy, for example, no dedicated open/close tray button, instead one must press the stop key for about 5 seconds which will either open or close the tray. Buttons are small and placed close together. If anyone knows of a universal remote that works with this unit please include it in your review.

Overall this player has far exceeded my expectations. Well done Philips!
