Summary: I cancel the order
Review:
At first, I was anxious to order this Philips DVP642 DVD player due to recommendation of "Reviewer: FERNANDO CASSIA "-Writer and Computer Geek-" (Buenos Aires, Argentina)", who plays DVD's from all around the world on this miracle machine. Than, I red manual that says that it converts video from PAL to NTSC only using VCDs. NO DVDs! The "-Writer and Computer Geek-" is misleading people in the USA because South America is not using NTSC system but PAL. His TV is PAL system with which this DVD unit works as described. This review is not relevant to the people in the USA who have TV with NTSC system. I do not know if the ability of the DVD player DVP642 to convert PAL DVDs to NTSC output signal would change by upgrading firmware from Philips Website, and if the upgrade would be even possible. (http://www.usasupport.philips.com/productSelector.html and type DVP642) The firmware is for DVD DVP642/17 and DVP642/37, not for plain DVP642. It is possible that firmware would upgrade the player to the one that is able to play PAL DVDs on NTFS TV, but this is only POSSIBILITY and I didn't try it.

Summary: Zevon was lifelong smoker and asbestos is cover-up excuse
Review:
Zevon must practice liberalism/socialism. Self-destroyer-presumably not functionally retarded-disowned the meanest of basic common sense regarding his LIFELONG SMOKING HABIT. He's the indiscriminately prototypical poster-boy for moronically scorned liberals/socialists who non-conformingly jeopardize themselves because of liberal/socialist thinking cancers, which dictate they'll never be responsible for their actions and/or can shift the blame. Zevon's ominously close to being lowered onto the stereotype of chronic smokers who kill themselves, then, in irrational vindictiveness, whose families sue tobacco companies immoderately. Zevon's kids should just huffily-in abnormal dissatisfaction-sue, confirming this hippie liberal's culpability!!!! You 230-strong are discomfortingly suffering from the LOWEST manifestation of hero worship-in your cases, sacrilegious idolatry of a frailly hampered, small-name studio musician, which progresses the outrage even more.

Summary: Best DVD Player EVER!
Review: Best DVD Player, at a great price. This will play almost anything you throw at it. (DVD, DVD+R/W, DivX 3.11, 4.X, 5.X, MPEG-4, VCD, SVCD, MPEG, ASF, MP3, JPEG). It has worked wonderfully on everything I have tried (except wmv, but who cares?). I have been waiting 6 years for something like this. But it now!

Summary: Awsome Player For The Price
Review: Despite what others say this drive DOES play DVD-R/RW disks right out of the box. At least mine did anyway.

Anyway, for DVD movies the picture quality looks as good as any other DVD player I've used. SVCD's look no different as well but the VCD quality does look a little off but that's okay because I doubt I'll be playing much VCD seeing as Divx/Xvid playback is awesome. As for the remote I think it could have had a little more thought put into it but it works fine.

Summary: Good palyer for the price
Review: Got this yesterday and it works very well. This player is espically handy for people (like me) who have a lot of AVI / MPEG / DIVX files or watch a lot of oversea DVD (Unlocking the region lock is extremely simple).

A few comments regarding playing video files only disc:
1. The player does not support Divx+ogg audio, but standard Divx + MPEG audio is fine.
2. The video file name must be in english (normal ASCII).
3. The "preview" function will not work on a video file disc.
4. Only 8X scan.

Hope this info is helpful

Review: Great player for the price ($66.00). Played everything I threw on it. Has a optical digital output and the resolution is also great.

Highly recommended.

Summary: Best DIVX player sofar
Review: I am an avid anime fan - it does it's job, and well. It processes the divx codecs better than my amd64 and intel systems. I have thrown ALOT at it sofar and takes it all without any hiccups. I have FMAlchemist (26 eps.) on 1 dvd-r and it plays them all. One reservation - it has a slightly clunky interface, but is still very functional.

Summary: I am extremely disappointed in this product
Review: I am extremely disappointed in this product. I have only had this DVD player for a couple days. I tried watching one of my favorite movies on it, only to have the player freeze after about 30 minutes. I could not get control back without cycling power. At first, I thought maybe there was something wrong with the movie, so I tried playing it in a friend's player and on my computer. Both worked fine. I tried 3 other movies, all of which I have played successfully on my computer. All of the 3 experienced the same freeze up as the first. I examined the disks for signs of damage or dirtiness, but they were all clean and unscratched. So, I guess it's back to watching movies on my computer. Sigh.

Summary: A very good DVD player
Review: I bought this DVD player because it can play any rewriteable DVD format out there...but so can my Philips from about 4 years ago. The main pluses are the DIVX, MP3, and JPG capabilities, which I do not use, and the progressive scan capability. The later is very nice to have on an LCD/plasma TV; it increases the vertical resolution, and the picture seems to be more stable. The player is slim and silver and looks great, though I dislike the power/standby light, which is exceptionally bright when the player is off (I hate that for a bedroom DVD player). The picture quality is great, it is very easy to use, and the price is great.
