Summary: Legend (Ultimate Edition)DVD ~ Tom Cruise
Review: I like fantasy which is why I gave this DVD a spin, but it just fails to stir or keep my interest. Unlike other great fantasy films where you are well introduced into the magical world, this movie just throws you right into it. The goblins are so corny and not scary at all and the story is almost too much of a stereotypical fantasy film.
To the credit of this movie, the atmosphere they create is really beautiful. The effects and visuals are far ahead of their time for 1986. When looking back at other popular fantasy/scifi movies like "Starwars" or "neverending story", some of the costumes look amateur by todays standards. The same cannot be said for the great costumes and visuals of Legend. This has become my "sleep" movie in my collection(if your feeling tired at the end of a long day, then pop this in as you doze off).

if you like Tom Cruise, I also recommmend "far and away" and "Vanilla Sky"

Summary: A very interesting fairy tale
Review: Back in 1986,when this film first came out alot of people said it was the worst movie ever made at the time.Which I found funny because I was among the few people who really loved this movie,which is now become a classic film.Directed by Ridley Scott(Alien,Blade Runner)and staring Tom Cruise,Mia Sara and Tim Curry(who is so awesome in anything he's in).It's an unusual fairy tale that of course a child at the age of 5(me at the time of the release of Legend)would fine this movie wondrous and visually stunning.You get everything in this movie,fairies,goblins,unicorns and of course mortals and if you by this DVD,you get two versions of Legend.On the first disc,you'll get the never-before-seen director's cut with a different score done by the great Jerry Goldsmith and on the second disc,you get the version we all know with the Tangerine Dream score.I was so pleased to find out that Universal Studios was going to put Legend out on a ultimate edition DVD which is so worth it.It's a great DVD to add to your collection.

Summary: Excellent!
Review: The only thing I didn't like about this movie is the song that plays over the final credits. If you like fantasy, get ready for the ride of your life, not to mention fantastic costumes and make-up. A bit scary for children under age 10.

Review: This isn't going to be long.
I had to get Legend because it's one of those movies people have to have if they consider themselves Fantasy fans. Also, Tom Cruise is in it, so if you collect his movies, then put this one right up there w/ Top Gun and Risky Business!
However, while this is a beautiful movie, the plot is pretty cliche. And I don't even mind the clicheness, but you'll probably leave this movie feeling like something is missing. It's just not the most fulfilling movie ever.

However, it is fun, and since it's only rated PG, you can watch it w/ your little sister if you want to:) Also, there are some very decent extras on the Ultimate collection, as it is a two disk piece!

Summary: One of the best Fantasy films ever!
Review: May I suggest that 'surround sound' is turned off???
As all the other reviewers seem to be concentrating on the presentation and not the content of the film, here's my twopence worth.

Definitely not a kid's film, this is a dark, sensual adult film of the age-old theme of the devil wanting darkness to take over the world - requiring the services of a virgin and a unicorn. The visual effects and photography are just brilliant, given the era this was made in - you can see Ridley Scott's influence and imagery in the latest Lord of the Rings films.

The acting is superb;
young Tom Cruise (as Jack) brings off the young lad charged with the task of rescuing the Princess and destroying Darkness with a grace and style that belong to a veteran;
Tim Curry is in his best-ever role here, (even better than Frankenfurter!); the stifled undercurrent of rage is barely held in check as he woos the slightly-willing princess; one is almost convinced by him as he declares his philosophy and aims - "No Good without Evil; no Love without Hate; no Innocence without Lust..." in that rich chocolatey voice; and his laughter and dismissive tone as 'the BOYY!' Jack confronts him sends shivers down one's spine;
and Mia Sara (whatever happened to her?) is both innocence and seduction, and believable in both roles, but her forceful rejection of the Lord of Darkness is as powerful a piece of acting as you will ever get.

Altogether a classic of film-making - seeing it again after several years makes one realise what a masterpiece this is!
Unreservedly recommended. *****

Summary: All Time Favorite
Review: If you are enjoyed the movies: The Never Ending Story, The Dark Crystal, and Labrynith, then you will love Legend.

These movies are part of my personal all-time favorite movies list. Legend is a beautiful & captivating fantasy story which has stuck with me through the decades.

If you are a fan of any of the aforementioned movies, then you need to do yourself a favor and see this one, as well.

Summary: A Fascinating Film with a Fascinating Backstory
Review: "Legend" is one of those films that was really ahead of its time. An epic tale of adventure along the lines of "Lord of the Rings", it really is unforgettable and features one of the most memorable villains in movie history.

The film is basically a fairy tale, centering on the struggle between good and evil. Tom Cruise plays Jack, an elf looking to save his love, Princess Lily, after the forces of darkness kill a unicorn and kidnap her, along with the last of the remaining unicorns. He must face the Lord of Darkness himself, played by an unrecognizable Tim Curry, to do so.

"Legend" really has everything. It's, at its heart, a love story about a man trying to save the woman he loves from the clutches of evil. But it also features a cast of characters that is almost too many to count. Goblins, elves, and fairies populate the world of "Legend", making for a true fantasy epic. The Lord of Darkness in particular is spectacular even when he says nothing, as he is both fascinating and terrifying to look at.

As I said, this movie was really made too soon. The effects and sets are incredible, only matched lately by "Lord of the Rings". The costume designs are incredible, particularly the Lord of Darkness and his minions. In many ways, the effects are almost too good, as it almost overshadows the story.

That's not to say that "Legend" is perfect. The acting, particularly by Cruise, isn't anything to write home about. I think that was partially due to the fact that many of the voices are dubbed in. Still, it's a bit disappointing. There's also some characters in the movie that really serve no purpose, like Screwball, except comic relief, which is sort of inappropriate in this film.

This "Ultimate Edition" actually includes two versions of the film. The "Director's Cut" includes the original score by Jerry Goldsmith, which is excellent. This version is also a little longer, although it's not very noticeable. The other version contains the original Tangerine Dream score, which is good, but is almost too cartoonish for my tastes.

The thing that really shines on this DVD is the documentary on the making of "Legend". Almost everyone involved in the film (except Cruise) is in it, talking about the production, the set, and their disappointment in the final U.S. product. The most interesting part is about how the sound stage where they had constructed this elaborate set burned down and caused them to forget about certain shots. Ridley Scott is one of my favorite directors, and he very candidly talks about this movie from beginning to end. It's really a treat for fans of this movie.

I would highly recommend "Legend" to any fantasy fan or anyone who enjoyed "Lord of the Rings". It's a movie that really doesn't get enough attention from film fans and critics.

Summary: An Excellent Fantasy...
Review: I'd recommend this film to true fantasy fans. It has an interesting plot, fun characters, and Mia Sarah in her evil black dress is well worth it! Tim Curry does an excellent job as Dark Lord, and he's almost more likeable than the hero of the story, Tom Cruise's Jack. An all around fun film to waste time watching.

Summary: Get it for the memories, not the Special Effects
Review: i'm kind of a biased reviewer, since this movie's got a little of "sentimental" attachement to it. i'm 23, and when this one came out back in the day i was all into the sci-fi stuff with big monsters! so, after joining the army and WORKING with monsters, i like to relive that childhood stuff. the BEST thing about this ultimate set is that it's got the renewed version, which is pretty slick, and the original theatrical version. watch that one completely also, since it'll really make you smile!

Summary: terrible packaging spoils a movie
Review: If you buy this version of the movie, plan on replacing the package. In contrast to a previous reviewer, I find the package too cute and inconvenient.
