Summary: Underrated Classic
Review: Legend is an absolute beauty. The musical scores, both of them, are absolutely entrancing. Tim Curry is an incredible Devil, and the story is both beautiful and classic. This is a movie you can watch over and over...and over.

Summary: Love It
Review: I absolutely LOVE this movie! I catch it as many times as I can (when shown on TV) We don't have a VCR anymore - so no good just buying the tape.

Can't wait until the uncut version gets produced-as I already appreciate it in the version I've seen. Feel sorry for the people who pick this movie apart....It's old, and it's fantasy - I mean, who cares?

Summary: Excellent visuals - awful central characters
Review: At first there was the Void and the dark forces natant within it. Then Light came into being, and the world came from the Light. Demons of the Void, jealous of the Light, tried to destroy the warm, sunny world. Thus, the Light was distilled into Alicorn, the unicorn's horn, so that demons could never destroy it. Demons are scheming creatures, however. Lord Darkness (Tim Curry in heavy makeup) commands his faithful goblin servant Pox to slay the unicorn, so that all light will be extinguished. Pox manipulates innocent Lily (Mia Sara) into luring the unicorn to him, and then shatters its horn. Now it is up to Lily's mysterious lover Jack (a young, nondescript Tom Cruise) and his fairy friends to travel to the demons' citadel and recover the magical Alicorn before the world is overwhelmed by darkness.

This ridiculous fairy tale relies so heavily on cliches that when trying to be graceful and simple it only manages to be dull and predictable. The viewer can essentially guess the entire plot before ever watching the film. Light triumphs over darkness, good triumphs over evil, and love conquers all. Jack and Lily, the main characters, are especially terrible: Tom Cruise unsuccessfully shoots for "teen heart-throb" in his revealing armor (hauberk and loincloth), but achieves nothing with his tepid acting; Mia Sara's character (who wears a white, billowing robe all throughout the film to signify her innocence) isn't even cliche - because very few films justify the presence of characters so primitive and trite. Even worse, there is a lot of out-of-place pop-culture humor (like the goblins' battle cry of "Adios, amigos!").

However, "Legend" has a very strong audio-visual presentation. The sets are incredible, the lighting and the camerawork are well-done, the music by Tangerine Dream (who also contributed to "Labyrinth") is a tasteful accent, and even the dwarf characters look nice (a first in movie history.) That said, there is a lot of extraneous footage of ugly galloping unicorns, sunny glens, bubbling water and gathering clouds. You get what you pay for, I suppose.

A moderately good fantasy phantasmagoria, minus plot and characters.

Summary: Not Quite There
Review: Sucessful Fantasies are rare in film, and this is not one of them. Though it surely is pretty to look at and Lily's transformation from innocent princess to queen of hell is fascinating to watch.

Summary: PLEASE READ THIS
Review: I rated this movie 5 stars because it is my favorite movie, incidentally, journey seems to be the favorite band of every person I know who shares my belief that this is THE greatest movie.(Don't ask me why) I am so glad to see some people making intelligent remarks about the movie instead of verbally killing it like most. WHY CAN'T PEOPLE JUST WATCH A MOVIE AND EITHER ENJOY IT OR NOT??? Why do we analyze and pick movies apart, just enjoy it, a movie wasnt a flop because 2 billion people didnt LOVE it. Critics are so ridiculous, they have to pick apart everything. When I watch a movie, I don't give one thought to a line that wasnt perfec, or any other nonsense, I just become emersed in the movie, and then when it's over, if I am sad to come back to the real world, IT WAS GOOD!! Like the new movie pearl harbor, I liked it alot, and NO i didnt even stop one second to think of something I didnt like about it. When "screw ups" were brought up later, I remembered them, but DIDNT CARE. NOTHING IS PERFECT. Legend is the only movie i would give up my whole movie collection for. SO WHY,WHY,WHY havent they released it yet, WHAT IS THE HOLD-UP??? I still havent seen the un-cut version that comes with the dvd. If a movie is so good it is your favorite, PLUS you cant think of anything to improve it, then somebody tells you 20 minutes were cut and the music was different, etc, and that the uncut version was so much better, WHAT DOES THAT TELL YOU??? If you can butcher a movie and its still fantastic, that means somebody knew what they were doing to make it. Anyway, all i can say is its the best movie ever, I HATE the fact that it is unreleased and i havent seen it uncut, I hate the way people disect a movie, etc etc. When I finaly do see the uncut version, i am going to be alone, i wont blink, i will make it the ultimate movie watching experience.BUY THIS MOVIE AND WATCH IT OFTEN, IT CAN HELP TO MAKE YOU FEEL LIKE A KID AGAIN WITH ALL THIS FANTASY STUFF>hehehe.

Summary: Tom Cruise's *only* bomb was his best film yet...!
Review: This is one of those films that came and went so fast in the theatres, but haunted late-night cable for years to come afterward, much to my delight as a youngster! To my mind there has never been a fantasy film as rich and textural as Legend. This is pure cinema extravagance, even forgiving the sometimes odd script. The unicorns in the cherry tree forest; the giant's kitchen; Tim Curry's first appearance as he steps through the mirror...all exquisite scenes. The cinematography is constantly scintillating and glowing, the light vs. shadow metaphor gets played out endlessly here. Also the overdubbing on the child actors' voices to give them the character of adult faeries is rather unnerving and fascinating. This film is one of Ridley Scott's most interesting and should be seen if only to wonder how it got made in the first place. Finally, these two words: Billy Barty!!

Summary: Stunning visuals, poor script
Review: The 1980's were quite the decade for sci-fi and fantasy films. Legend (released in 1986) is one of the most visually stunning movies I've ever seen. One reason alone to watch this movie would be to see the amazing surreal landscapes. That said though the movie still has some major flaws. The script is really poor and the characters are extremely shallow. If the main actress (Mia Sara) wasn't so beautiful I probably would've never watched this movie again. The first third of the movie is great, but after that it's all down hill; it just gets darker and darker and it loses it's fantasy feel-- it turns more into a cheesy horror movie. Tim Curry, who plays Satan or whatever, is excellent, and Tom Cruise is okay-- considering that the script was so shoddy. I think they could've done without the stupid elves and midgets, which were mainly for comic relief, but I never laughed. I liked the fairy girl and Gump though. Overall it could've been a lot better.
