The NeverEnding Story

Summary: Old film but memorized very much.
Review: In Japan NeverEnding Story was roadshowed at that time. Because I was 8 years old, couldn't understand the movies that had difficult story. On the other hand, as the age was young, had the eyes that could feel fantasy stories purely, that is, had the pure mind that could feel what bravery or challenging etc was wonderful thing.
When I was a adult now, having such a thinking is difficult, that is, when think about [bravery or challenging], in mind needless thinkings are added, resignation, fear, uneasy etc..

I was happy that can watch this film when was child.
Recently I watched the film on TV aggain after an interval of twenty years. But even if I am a adult, the moving mind remained, I was moved very much again as I was a boy. For instance when the horse sinked into a marsh, I that was child cried, and when I watched the scene again on TV, I have the emotion of the sorrow.

when we get to be adults, in many meaning we lose the mind that we had in children age, for instance, passion, trial, tenderness etc. Because we are followed by time, money, benefit etc, tend to forget such important things.

But by watching the movies, I feel that got such mind again in addition to have remembered the scenery of my child age.

Review: We watched this film with a mixed-ages group, and the reactions were decidedly mixed: the littlest kids were scared, the preschoolers liked it, and the older kids and adults were laughing when they weren't bored. While the story is terrific, the effects are too dated for today's sfx-jaded viewers. You'd be much better off reading the book.

Also, the dvd extras are bad. There is a trailer but all other features (Cast & Crew, The Heroes, The Childlike Empress, The People of Fantasia) are just a screen or two of text. The film can be heard in English or French, and subtitles are available in English, French or Spanish.

You can see why this film was loved, but it's almost unwatchable for all but preschoolers today.

Review: First of all, can't expect too much of the special effects, one of the downside of old fantasy movies after being spoilt by Harry Porter, Lord of the Ring, etc.

Secondly, the story line is not that captivating. So, I will only recommend that for kids only.

Summary: Childhood Favorite, But Let's Not Kid Ourselves
Review: "The NeverEnding Story" is a wonderful film, but mainly because it wormed its way into our hearts when we were young. The story seems to smell of "The Lord of the Rings," yet with far less character and story development. I enjoy the interaction between the reader and the story. For any lover of fiction and reading, this movie will help bring his or her passion into focus. It is a fine movie to watch with children, but I do not think that there is much to offer to the adult audience.

As many reviewers have commented, I had to have this film for my collection, if only to relive my childhood.

Review: One of my favorite movies from the first time I saw it great story and for the time it was made stunning visuals, however the reason that this DVD gets 3 stars and not 5 is due to the reduced amount of viewable area compared to the VHS. Examples are when atreyu wakes up after being rescued by Falcor and falcor sneakingly opens one eye you can only see enopugh of his face to see the eye where as in the VHS you saw his whole face. Another is where the gone woman asks if he is still in pain and he rubs his arm which you cannot see in the DVD but you can clearly see his arm in the VHS. They need to re-fit the video to correct this little issue that is on through the whole movie and it truely does take from the feeling of the film. one of the few times you will see me recomend a VHS over a DVD. Summary: The NeverEnding Story
Review: One of the greatest motion pictures of all time! The Special Effects were so ahead of its time that you would think that this movie was done by using CGI (Computer Generated Imagery). In fact Steven Spielberg loves The NeverEnding Story so much that the original Auryn prop is in a glass case at his office. Hope to see a Directors Cut or Special Collectors Edition someday! I need to point out a very important fact on this DVD. The picture is presented at a 2.35:1 aspect ratio and not at a 1.85:1 ratio as stated in the Technical Department!

Summary: Excellent growing pains movie
Review: I was a "moonchild" growing up. Bouncing around from city to city and losing lots of relatives to death. This movie was MY escape from reality and I was very much like Bastin myself. In fact when he takes the key and goes into the school attic, that was me. I would look for any way to escape my home life. I read any book I could and fantasized about being the characters. Bastin and his wonderous adventure to Fantasia on the flying dog was just the way to go else where. The sadness of losing Artax still makes me sob to this day. I'm getting this on DVD so my kids can grow up with this wonderful movie. Thank You. TLD

Summary: If you don't already have the magic...
Review: The Neverending Story (Wolfgang Petersen, 1984)

All we in America knew of Wolfgang Petersen in 1984 was Das Boot. How were we to know that it was completely out of character? His followup, The Neverending Story (and a smattering of films since, e.g. In the Line of Fire) have shown that Petersen has a far more absurd air than the brilliant, but relentlessly depressing, Das Boot would have us believe.

The Neverending Story takes that sense of the absurd to its logical conclusion. Thankfully, Petersen had snapped back to something resembling reality by the time he made the film after this, 1985's Enemy Mine. But for The Neverending Story, Petersen pretty much cut himself loose from anything anchoring him to the earth and took off in a flight of fantasy that is, at the very least, a little disturbing.

Someone wiser than I once said of such films that "if you see them when you're eight years old, they'll be great forever, but if you see them for the first time in high school or older, you just don't get it." (Thus, the continuing popularity of The Goonies has finally been explained.) I was in high school when The Neverending Story came out, so I guess my reaction wasn't much of a surprise. It was fun for what it was, though readers of Michael Ende's novel are likely to feel cheated and those with even a shred of subtlety are going to be beating themselves over the head for the movie's final twenty minutes.

Barret Oliver (D. A. R. Y. L., Frankenweenie) stars as Bastian, who spends his time getting picked on in school and listening to his father (Gerald McRaney, years away from Major Dad fame) talk about how awful it is to have an imagination. While running from the school bullies, he stumbles into a bookshop owned by a rather odd chap named Koreander (Thomas Hill, who played the president in The Nude Bomb, the Get Smart movie). He secures a book from Koreander whose plot is, in essence, the rest of the film (save the merciless moralizing at the end).

Despite said merciless moralizing, some of the things the beginning of the film imparts to the viewer are that it's okay to steal stuff from stores as long as you leave a note saying you're going to give it back, it's okay to cut school as long as you have something better to do, and that no matter how long you stay away, no one will come looking for you. (Is it a spoiler to say part of the end's moral is that these actions have no consequences?)

I'm sure those who were slightly younger when this came out have a decidedly different take on it, but take the advice of my ever-so-wise friend. If you haven't already seen it, you're going to sit there at the end wondering what all the fuss was about. **

Summary: 1984 work of art!!!
Review: This film is really amazing for a film from 1984!! the special effects are unreal and so are the characters. The story begins when a young boy comes across an old book that he thinks is just a book. But when he finds himself in the middle of the story is when things get interesting. Like I said the people that he comes across in the book are well made and some a amazing size, the sets where it took place are equally amazing. Overall this movie is a perfect adventure movie for all ages alike. Also the movie just came out on DVD so this should be great in your home audio system. turn off the lights, grab some snacks and get lost in the "Neverending Story" it's great!!
