Summary: An animated movie/fairie tale first!
Review: We've all seen animated movies and fairie tales in which the ugly guy gets the girl before; "Beauty and the Beast" is standard stuff. What's novel is that the girl isn't all that attractive (although she's supposed to be horribly ugly, she isn't; she's still kind of cute, actually, but definitely in a non-standard way; she's a bit saftig, and has slightly coarse features) and the hero's perfectly okay with that. And while it's true that the man that this less-than-stunning woman gets in the end is an ogre, it's been made very clear throughout the movie that the ogre is the GOOD catch; the handsome prince, after all, is the villain of the piece.

Granted, there are flaws in the movie; it's supposed to be shockingly funny that the "handsome prince" is short, and they really do try too hard with the humor, rather than just telling the story and letting the humor come out where appropriate (my NINE YEAR OLD BOY thought that the humor was too unsubtle), and I find the animation style jarring; what's wrong with good, old-fashioned animated pictures? Why does it have to be made high-tech? It really isn't an improvement. But the story itself is wonderful, and if Eddie Murphy is annoying as the talking donkey, Mike Myers is wonderful as the voice of Shrek; the Scottish brogue was a marvellous touch, and done beautifully.

Definitely a keeper; it's just a shame that by trying too hard, the writers kept it from being as great as it could have been.

Summary: ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL
Review: All that I have to say is that Shrek is EASILY the best movie that I have seen since X-Men. Everyone should see this movie!!! Its perfect for all ages and all the people who also reviewed this movie and bad mouthed it, Im sorry to say it, but they are idiots. Thank you.

Summary: A bit disappionted
Review: I kept hearing how hiliarous this movie was. I had wanted to see it because I have always loved animation, and it had a unique story and main character, SHREK. I thought the laughs were few and far between myself. I was expecting to laugh, waiting to laugh, and well, maybe, I just didn't get it. Shrek was not bad at all, it was cute, and it had a great message in the end that was very endearing. It's a cute movie, I just don't think it was all that funny.

the gingerbread man being interrogated by the prince..DO YOU KNOW THE MUFFIN MAN? THE MUFFIN MAN? and "YOU MONSTER!" okay, this was very funny. but true hiliarous films have you constantly laughing. This was almost half way through the movie. And the ending was very funny. See, this isn't all that funny, so if you are expecting too howl with laughter threw the whole thing, i think you will be disappointed.

Summary: cute
Review: Not as funny as I thought it was going to be. But it's funny and cute for kids. There was a part (or two?) where I view it as not being suitable for kids and I was surprised that the comment(s) were there. It was Cinderella and Hunchback rolled into one with a happy ending. Overall I enjoyed it, I plan on buying it and recommend it.

Summary: Laid waste by laughter.
Review: An astounding array of comic elements, attention gripping enough for an 8 year old boy, all the while assaulting the adults with stuff that flies over the heads of kids, leaving them totally undamaged. I have not laughed this hard since Blazing Saddles and now for totally different reasons! The twists and turns of the fairy tale creatures characters surpass by far the Fractured Fairy Tales of Bullwinkle days. And those were great. I had to go see it a second time to see what I missed while in my intense seizures of laughter the first time. GREAT FLICK!! GO SEE!

Summary: Tried too hard, ended up lacking in creativity & imagination
Review: There are movies I hate that I just think are aweful, and then there are movies I just don't like but can still understand how others could enjoy. Shrek would be the latter. The problem I found in Shrek is that it tried too hard to be all sorts of different things and to appeal to the broadest audience possible, instead of just building off its own creativity and imagination. Shrek had potential- there were some interesting characters and it had hints of creative writing (and the animation was great), but in my opinion it fell short of that potential. Far too many fart jokes; too many (I think almost intentional but ineffective) genre cliches; the movie took advantage of current and popular trends and fads etc far too much, taking away from its sense of creativity and originality (such as 'the Matrix scene') making the movie one that screams "2000s" instead of one that will age well; and I thought the movie took a dive near the end when it went for the typical Disney-esque plot and ending.

I also found the character Shrek to be rather annoying after a while, and Eddie Murphy gives a rather obnoxious performance in this movie. But neither does much to detract from the movie.

It's not like I didn't enjoy Shrek (I'd give it 3/5 stars tops), but it just wasn't all that. Certainly didn't live up to my expectations after all the media, critical and viewer hype that surrounded it. If you're a fan of animated movies, this is definately worth checking out. Just don't expect a story that will stick with you your whole life.

Summary: Way Below Expectations
Review: The clever moments are few and far between in this Dreamworks computer animated tale. The story has great potential but is full of lazy, dumb jokes like references to movies nobody will remember in 10 years and multiple fart jokes that the children at the theater I saw it at seemed to love. The actors do a fine job with the voice characterizations but the writing doesn't match their talent. One of the highlights of the film was when they had bits involving other fairy tale characters, particularly the Gingerbread Man interrogation. One more thing- the animation itself is rather odd and ugly looking.

Summary: Sould you see it, or not?
Review: Family movie, animation, fairytale kind figures, a bit of romance..... Disney is what comes to mind.... but it's not. This movie is all but Disney.

Sure there is romance in this story, but it is spinkled with good humor. It could be a fairy tale yes, but it is a fun fairy tale. And yes it is a family movie because whether you are a child of 3 or a grown-up of 90 this movie brings happiness into everybody's life.

The story in a nutshell: Shrek (Mike Meyers), angry because his swamp has been taken over, is sent by the evil Farquaad (John Lithgow) to get the beautifull, or is she, princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz) so Farquaad can marry her. But the "hero" of the story could not be a good hero if he did not have the companionship of a side kick, in this case a donkey (Eddie Murphy). Allthough companionship is perphaps a too big a word it is more a love-hate relationship is a comic kind of way. The donkey rides along with Shrek because Shrek saved the donkey's life.

One thing is for sure, the characters in this movie are all very well played by the actors both animated and voice of the "real" actor.

When I went to see this movie I didn't really know what to expect. I read and saw reviews on tv. It sounded like it could be a fun way to spend a saturdaynight. But I never expected it to be this fun. Everyone around me was laughing out loud at one point in the movie or another.

Knowing that DreamWorks likes to toy whit its rival I was curious how the "disney"-like moments, as they started of, would end. They ended very well and in a very, very comic way.

If I had the power to send you to this movie I would, but I can't and so I can only say: This movie is worth every penny, dollar or what currency you might use to see it on a full sized theater screen.

So the answer to the question if you should see this movie or not, is a definite yes.

Summary: Shrek! Loved it!
Review: Shrek brings a new millenium twist to animated fairy tale. the story of an ogre who finds himself pushed out of his own swamp "home" by fairy tale characters hiding from the evil Prince trying to destroy them. The voice stars of the film, Mike Myersw as Shrek, Eddie Murphy as Donkey, Cameron Diaz as Princess Fiona and John Lithgow as the Prince were solid on the mark with perfect characterizations. A great film for kids to see for the animation and for adults, especially movie fans, for the Hollywood "in" jokes in the story.

Summary: Good...........but missing something.
Review: Shrek..... This movie had a great cast, and awsome animation. I thought though that this movie could of had a better plot, and more jokes. I enjoyed Eddie Murphys character. THe animation though was astounding, and for that I like it alot, and also for eddie murphy (DONKEY!). I will get this movie on DVD so whenever I am bored i can put it in, and get a good laugh.
