Summary: great animation but
Review: I personally found the content to be very disturbing, grotesque, macabre. If your kids are easily creeped out, skip it.

Summary: A heartwarming Christmas monster story!
Review: As a resident of Monstropolis, I never miss this tale of Christmas misfits and monsters! Jack Skellington is a true hero -- a figure kids would be frightened of if he popped out of their closet. Now that's a man I can get behind 100%! Halloweentown is a dark scary place kids would hate, and the animation is top-notch. The songs are also great for scare singalongs. And the finale never fails to bring a tear to my friend Mike's eye. I give it two horns up!

Summary: This is THE best movie
Review: I have recently done my own stop motion animation film, and I saw this again recently since doing it and, thought I had seen it like hundreds of times before, I was so blown away now that I understood how hard it is! Especially that one part where he sings that song 'poor jack' and his clothes are all torn up and swing back and forth OMG that is hard, like, somebody animated that frame by frame and it must have taken sooo long. And its got this awesome pan through the whole thing, that whole scene has these great sweeping camera movements and that is really difficult to do, they had to get like these robotic cameras that moved frame by frame (no joke, watch the making of)!!!! This movie is such a landmark and I show it to everyone who hasn't seen it. The DVD is great because it has lots of special features and making ofs. If you haven't seen this movie then you are a POOR DEPRIVED SOUL!!!! Also the music is so great I am obsessed with Danny Elfman he is so cool. DANNY E 4 EVER!

Summary: A must-have for the Tim Burton fan
Review: As a fan of the Nightmare, I was delighted to see the film in it's widescreen glory. But this DVD also includes a collection of Tim Burton's earlier works.

No bones about it, a must for every DVD collection.

Summary: Thematic genius: Good for Christmas, GREAT for Halloween
Review: Tim Burton's "The Nightmare Before Christmas" is a brilliant movie. Every thing in the movie oozes holiday cheer--- both for Halloween and Christmas. The movie is hysterical but also moving--- the mood, though light and funny, is also fits perfectly in the Halloween mode with it's moody, spooky ballads. All of the characters are endearing and fantastically animated. I recommend this movie not so much for children as for young adults and adults who enjoy a good holiday romp that has some cinematic worth. The fabulous job done by the art direction and creator shows through. In the Special Edition, you are given ever more background to the spooky elements and the creation process. Other Time Burton films included are worth the price of this DVD alone! If you love Halloween, art, Time Burton, Dr. Seuss or just a good film, watch this movie. Buy this edition if you want more from the genius behind the scenes.

Summary: "Nightmare" is a loaded Christmas Present
Review: Before I even pontificate about the stop-motion marvel, THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS, I'd like to talk briefly about some of the extras gracing this Special Edition. For those of you familiar with the loaded $ LaserDisc box set, these are the identical features minus the hardcover book at a fraction of the price. Yes, it has cut scenes, trailers, a making of documentary, and an interesting running commentary by the films director, etc... but, what catapults this DVD into super value is that it contains the first 2 Tim Burton shorts, VINCENT and FRANKENWEENIE in their entirety. Burton's first, VINCENT only runs about 6 minutes and is a very funny stop-motion story about a young boy (probably Burton himself) obsessed with Vincent Price. Price even provides the narration. FRANKENWEENIE is a half hour long live-action vehicle done entirely in black and white. It combines the tone and concepts of the early monster movies with a LEAVE IT TO BEAVER suburban neighborhood. Often quite funny, it all resolves on a very "positive" note. Daniel Stern and Shelly Duvall portray teh young parents. Now, on to our feature presentation. THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS is the greatest full-length stop motion movie to date. Cleverly taking the cult qualities of half-hour Christmas Specials like RUDOLPH and combining them with the monster movies of yore and a large helping of Dr Seuss, the result is a mind-boggling visual feast worth many, many visits. From the opening frames (Burton has consistently restored my faith in great opening titles) to the final pay-off, the visuals under the direction of Henry Selick (JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH) are total candy corn for the eyes. Additionally, Burton's favorite composer Danny Elfman writes a nuanced musical score and several economic songs to help scoot the story around. Add, a great voice cast including the wonderful Catherine O'Hara and Paul "Pee-Wee Herman" Reubens and you're in for a great experience. Only in the last half hour does the film fall from its tremendous pedestal as our hero Jack Skellington is first attacked by the earthly military and then attacked in a blacklight funhouse by a 'forced' villain. These scenes just can't hold the charm of the rest of the film. And as they are the actual story resolution, they bring a five star film down to four stars. All in all, the film might be a bit frightening to the Teletubbies set. And some parental judgement might be in order, potentially offensive material always exists when you deal with 'afterlife', 'witchcraft' and even 'Santa'. Who'd ever guess that the Disney organization would produce a comic film that involves the dead and the kidnapping of Santa Claus. "A pox, how delightful... a pox."
