Summary: Watch Out Disney!!
Review: I saw the ads for this on tv and but I have always been a loyal Disney fan, but in the last 3 years Disney has been putting out...! I love the hands on animation that they still used in this movie. It was very well done, the story was funny and exciting and well written, the music was awesome and the overall colors and backgrounds they used were incredible.I totally recommend this movie to everyone I know. Thanks Dreamworks for keeping the "old- fashioned" hand drawn animation alive. Also, I saw previews for the new Disney animated movie, "Atlantis, looks like it going to be another diapppointment in my opinion as far as animation. If Dreamworks keeps this up, Disney better watch out!! Also, Prince of Eygpt was a Dreamworks picture and it was wonderful as well.

Summary: not great but likable
Review: "The Road to El Dorado" is no great shakes as an animated film, but it makes for a relatively breezy, relatively painless way to spend a spare ninety minutes. The film tells the too-familiar story of a couple of fortune hunting con artists who stumble quite by accident onto an ancient civilization and are immediately mistaken for messianic gods. In this case, the lovable rogues are Tulio and Miguel, two early 16th century Spaniards who, in a rigged game of dice, win a map to the legendary land of gold called El Dorado, reportedly located in the recently discovered New World.

Voiced by Kevin Kline and Kenneth Branagh, respectively, Tulio and Miguel become surprisingly endearing characters. The script uses the traditional approach of domesticating history by having its characters utilize mannerisms and speech patterns that are decidedly contemporary in nature - but at least in this case some of the humor that arises from this comedic use of anachronism is actually funny. Add to the mix a feisty Rosie Perez as a cynical Indian maiden who comes between the men, along with some "good" and "evil" natives - and the stage is set for some internecine as well as cross-cultural conflicts.

Despite the banality of the story, the film moves at a relatively brisk pace, stopping just long enough at points to squeeze in the inevitable musical numbers, penned this time by none other than the songwriting team of Elton John and Tim Rice. The backgrounds are colorful, the animation clever and exciting and the soft-pedaling of the horrors of this particular period in history understandable in the context of a movie aimed essentially at little children.

"The Road to El Dorado" will not go into the books as an animation classic, but by not taking itself too seriously, the film earns a decent amount of good will from its target audience.

Summary: Good, but disappointing
Review: This movie has great music and excellent animation. It has a lot of humor. However, I was shocked at the nudity and sex, which I have never seen in a cartoon before, and I hope never to see again in a cartoon. Without those scenes, it would have been much, much better. I think it should be rated PG-13, and done in live-action rather than animation so it doesn't appeal so much to children. This is by no means a children's movie.

Especially after Dreamworks' exceptional treatment of the Moses story in "The Prince of Egypt", "The Road to El Dorado" was a big letdown.

Summary: I thought it was Disney at first!
Review: When it was in the theatre I just passed it off as another childish animation, and, as a teenager, I was not interested in such things. But when my sister conned me into watching it with her I was enthralled. At the beginning, it's style led me to believe it was Disney and I considered sneaking off. However, once the story got rolling I began to get intruiged. I guess the part for me that made be begin to love it and watch closely was the pun that seemed to create itself-"HOLY SHIP!"

I've seen reviews that mark this wonderful movie as "horrible" or "lacking story". All have to say is - the people who wrote those are adults. This is an animation obviously made not for the young, not for the old, but for those in between. I salute Dreamworks for creating animated movies that tweens and teens can enjoy!!!

If you are or have a teenager in the house, at least rent this movie. Who knows. I know I'M going to buy it!

Summary: A lot of fun to watch
Review: I've been somewhat dissappointed in the Disney cartoons as of lately. I was hesitant to see this one because I thought it looked like a very predictable storyline, but ended up being very happy I did see it. The movie moves fast, you never get bored. Like so many have said, Kevin and Kenneth make a great duo. The music fit the movie perfectly. I bought the movie, and I don't even have any kids. It's just an enjoyable movie to watch. Not too serious, interesting storyline, good music, likeable characters, and I still find myself laughing out loud at the jokes. It's definitely worth buying.

Summary: A Visual Delight...
Review: Dreamworks is known for beautifully animated films and this one is no exception. The colors are glorious and the animation is incredibly breathtaking. It is truly a visual feast for the eyes.

I found the script to be less than satisfying, but nevertheless quite enjoyable. This is not a bad movie, it just is not a very strong one. There are a few clever interactions between the main characters, and more than a sprinkling of good laughs.

All the blockbuster elements are in place, but they just don't come together as well as they do in more popular films such as Prince of Egypt or the Disney Classics.

Overall I would recommend this film. Enjoy it for the visual masterpiece that it is and don't examine it critically.

Summary: Kevin & Kenneth make a fabulous team!
Review: Even if they're just doing voiceovers, Kevin Kline and Kenneth Brannaugh make a wonderful team. They play marvelously well against each other in this Dreamworks animated film. Dreamworks has made a surprisingly good name for itself in its foray into animated films (see "Prince of Egypt," and "Chicken Run"), giving good ol' Disney a run for its money. This particular film is visually stunning, Elton John's music is perfect to hum along with (as usual), and the dialogue (my favourite part) is witty, fast-paced, and very quotable. Enjoyable for both kids and adults, as adults will get many of the double entendres that will fly over a child's head. 5 stars, 2 thumbs up, and a rave review all around!

Summary: Something new
Review: One of better movies that you will want to watch with your children. The humor is hilarious and the action is better than I expected. The score and music kept the movie moving along and seemed to allow people to keep with the action that was being delivered to them. The movie can be enjoyed by anyone from 3 and older. There were places that I felt could have been changed (bathing scenes and some violence) that could have been left out but I found nothing that was so bad it made my stomach turn.

Summary: El Camino a The Golden
Review: This is a great movie for both kids and adults; both will enjoy it a lot. Unto my analysis:

The story - there's not much of a complicated plot here, as this movie was made (and should be seen) just for the fun of it. Miguel and Tulio are two friends who sail from con to con. Trying to escape from angry sailors who figured out that Tulio and Miguel had cheated, the two friends wound up on Cortes' ship. They're discovered, sent to a brig, where later Cortes' warhorse, Altivo, "helps" them to get out. They drift in the ocean for quite awhile, ending up *gasp* exactly at the beginning of where El Dorado's map (which they got from the sailors back in Spain, who knows how those sailors got it in the irst place) indicated. They find the city, are mistaken for gods, Tulio wants to get out and return to Spain with the gold (who wouldn't?), while Miguel falls in love with the city...at the end, decisions have to be made...the plot's not important here, what's worth your viewing is THE SCRIPT.

The music - another great score by Hans Zimmer, though the best pieces of music were scored by John Powell. Elton John's songs, both the ones that made the movie as well as those who didn't, are great.

The DVD - this is a kids' DVD, with a "read along" featurette, games for their enjoyment, a PC game demo...but it also has a "making of", the trailer (you can even laugh with the trailer), commentaries by directors Don Paul and Eric "Bibo" Bergeron, a look at how coloring was approached for each scene, and Elton John's music video for "Someday out of the blue", in which he is animated.
