Summary: Is there anyone who would not give this five stars?
Review: Not a "great" movie, just a !!!great movie. Yup, it's sappy, but it gives you license to be sappy. I saw this in the theater and everybody clapped at the end, unabashedly. I bought it and watched it three times in a row, then I made my students watch it. None of them had seen it, now they're going to all go rent it for their families. I can't think of a better gift to give anybody, the opportunity to re-experience your childhood. This movie is pure magic, it's what you would bottle if you could bottle what it means to be American.

Summary: It was FANTASTIC!
Review: This is one of my favorite movies! It has a great moral which is to always try to acheive your dreams even though it may be hard at times. And what's really great about it is that it's true! An inspiring movie. Ten thousand thumbs up!!

Summary: Best movie I've seen in years
Review: In an era when it seems like there has to be sex, blood, and violence to sell a movie, this one is amazing. It has none of these, yet I would still rate it the best movie that I've seen since the original Star Wars was released in 1976. And in a rare statement from me, I would count myself a better person for having seen it.

On my list, I would rate it in the same vein as "Dave", and "Tucker".

Summary: A great movie, oscar caliber
Review: I really, really loved this movie. I think it ought to get best picture, best actor (the boy who plays Homer), and best musical score. I found where to look for more stuff on the real Homer, too. Go to homerhickam.com and there's lots of neat stuff.

Summary: October Sky ~ A Great Escape!
Review: October Sky, adapted from the book "Rocket Boys", is a great movie in the same way that Field of Dreams and Stand-By-Me were. My Grandfather worked in the Coalwood Mine, my Father was raised in the same conditions and the same area of McDowell County, West Virginia and knows intimately the desire of not wanting to work in the mines. The movie accurately depicts life in the small town of Coalwood and the dreams of its youngsters to leave the area.

Excellent story, excellent photography, and excellent plot. A great adaptation of the book.

Recommend that if you get the opportunity to visit Coalwood, that you take it. It's in the middle of nowhere --- and the people of the small town are still amazingly proud of it's claim to fame ... The Rocket Boys.

Summary: An outstanding inspiration for todays youth to go for it.
Review: Most of us limit ourselves to our culture and environment and never go beyond those limitations. Homer was an inspiration of the human spirit and the possibilities of persistance and determination motivated by a love and facination of rockets. By being delight directed, he was able to do difficult things. The characters were very believable and each added to the realism of Homer's true story. I felt transported back to 1957 seeing both the good and the bad of that era. It is a "feel good" movie that can be watched over and over and still be inspired each time.

Summary: "I'm a better person for having seen this movie"
Review: This is the type of movie that I classify as a "growth" film. By that, I mean that I am a better person for having seen it. "Field of Dreams", "The Shawshank Redemption" and "The Dead Poet's Society" are among my favorite growth films and now I am happy to say I can add "October Sky" to that rare list. This film opened my eyes to some truths about my relationship with my own father that I can say I may not have figured out on my own had I not seen this movie.

It is refreshing to see that in this cynical age, we can still be surprised by a movie that celebrates such values as hard work, integrity, staying with your dreams in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles and respecting your family and how important those relationships are even when they are not ideal. WOW! All that in a movie made in the nineties. The fact that it is true makes it all the more gratifying.

It is also good to know that people--real people-- with such values are running things over there at NASA. It is easy to forget that. Maybe we are not doomed after all!

Summary: Inspiring and beautifully delivered!
Review: In the tradition of great coming-of-age films such as "Stand By Me", comes a wonderfully written and moving true story of perseverence and determination. Homer Hickam's book "Rocket Boys" provided the material for this movie based on his youth and there is a feeling of authenticity to the movie which just grabs hold of the audience from the first scene to the last. Jake Gyllenhaal, who plays Homer, delivers a marvelous and moving performance. One can almost feel the emotions Homer is experiencing as he must fight to realize his dream of constructing an amateur rocket. The movie also has a wonderful supporting cast which result in a solid and inspirational movie. I truly recommend this movie to anyone who has ever had a dream. This is definitely better than any so-called "blockbuster" available.
