Summary: My favorite movie!!!
Review: This movie is one of the best I 've ever seen!!! The plot is very original and interesting. I watched it in school and then decided to rent it. I watched it over and over until I knew most of the lines and all of the songs by heart. The movie is that great. It's about newsboys in 1899 that live in New York. They go on strike when the price they pay for papers is raised a tenth of a cent(that added up to a lot of money back then). The whole thing is filled with singing and dancing. Well written with great actors,(such as Gabriel Damon, my fave) the story really makes you think about how life was back then. I recommend it to anyone that wants to see a great movie.

Summary: I've been watching this movie since I was 5 years old...
Review: This is quite possibly the only musical you will ever need. Complete with song, dance and love interest, this was the only movie I ever watched as a little kid. It may not have done well in the box office, but any child who likes the "Sound of Music" or ANY other musical, will absolutely love Newsies.

Summary: Disney did something right!
Review: Wow...this DVD is amazing. I have never been so smitten by a piece of circular plastic.

Newsies fans, this is a MUST!

It's wonderful to see the once out-of-print NEWSIES on DVD and VHS now easily obtainable. It's beautiful :)

Summary: The best movie ever!
Review: This is the best movie I have ever seen. It not only brings music back into our lives, but does so in such a way that will have you singing and dancing in the isles. Deffinetly a must see. You will find yourself watching this movie over and over again! The cast is amazing, Christian Bale, David Moscow, Aaron Lohr, Gabriel Damon, Robert Duvall, and Anne Margret have you sitting on the edge of your seat the entire time. You will find yourself really feeling as if you are a part of this children's crusade, a part of their team. You will be moved to tears during Jack Kelly's Santa Fe solo, cheering during the rally, holding your breath during the fight scenes, and singing right along with the boys during Sieze the Day and King of New York. The choreography done by Peggy Holmes and Kenny Ortega is amazing, the best I have ever seen in a Disney musical. I would recomend this movie to children and adults of all ages. A perfect family movie, it will bring you closer to your kids, and really experience something new. Don't hesitate, it will be the best money you have ever spent!

Summary: Extra! Extra! Read all about it!
Review: This musical about the Newsie strike of 1899 is a must-see. Written by the composer of Beauty and the Beast, the songs are all fun-filled and exciting!
When Pulitzer and Hearst raise the price that the Newsies pay for their papers from .50 for 100 "papes" to .60, the Newsies of New York go on strike to get the price back where it was. Lead by Jack Kelly, an escaped criminal, the Newsies form a union and challenge the powerful. Will they win?
With the songs "Santa Fe", "King of New York", "Carrying the Banner" and much, much more Newsies is an excellent addition to your Disney collection.

Summary: Much better than you'd think
Review: I must admit I was dubious about this film. However, it was a quite good: the dancing was excellent, the music, by Menken, was better than expected, and the story was terrific. This is not Sondheim, but it's gotten a bad rap, and deserves better press than it's gotten.

Summary: Viewer in Atlanta
Review: What a great, pick-you-up movie! I love it, my kids love it - the music's great. Definately a recommended movie to add to the collection. It's great to see Disney put out a musical and now cowtow to the conventional, packaged productions they often deliver.

Summary: Finally on DVD!
Review: After years of waiting, I am pleased to say that Newsies is finally on DVD! Unlike many Newsies fans, I was unable to enjoy Newsies in all its grand glory on the big screen. So it was inevitable for me to buy the DVD to watch the dancing in widescreen, listen to the singing in digital sound, and enjoy the great extras.

THE STORY:
The movie takes place in turn of the century New York, when newspaper giants, Joseph Pulitzer and William Hearst, duke it out in the newspaper-selling war. In Pulitzer's attempt to gain more profits, he decides to raise the prices of "papes" for those who distribute the papers, the Newsies. It's a David and Goliath story, streetrats taking on a rich and powerful newspaper giant. It has a lot of heart, a lot of jokes, and a lot of singing and dancing. It's a great musical!

WIDESCREEN:
One of the key reasons why I bought this DVD was to watch all of the dancing in widescreen. Everything looks better in widescreen, but to be honest, some of the camera shots in the dancing scenes are so abrupt and close-up that I could barely appreciate the wide presentation. The best reason to get this in widescreen is for the end scene when the entire cast dances their way out of the gates. You can see all the dancers and it is totally awesome. I wish there had been more still camera shots right in front of the dancers like in that scene.

THE SOUND:
The sound is in Dolby Digital, very clear. I'm happy with the sound, because anything is better than VHS.

THE EXTRAS:
-Audio Commentary: The audio commentary is great. It is so interesting to hear the behind-the-scenes stories, and how the movie came to be. Kenny Ortega [director/choreographer], Michael Finnell [producer], Peggy Holmes [co-choreographer], and Bob Tzudiker and Noni White [writers] are featured in the commentary. One thing that makes me sad is that in the commentary, Kenny Ortega talks about deleted scenes and how they would PROBABLY be on the DVD (which they aren't!!). I wish he had a hand in putting this DVD together, because he loved working on the movie so much. He would've treated the DVD with the same care.
-Behind the Scenes: There are two behind the scenes featurettes, both of which are about 20 minutes long. There are interviews with the film makers as well as the actors. I particularly enjoyed watching them practice dancing, and seeing them sing during the recording session.
-Other Extras: There is a documentary featuring interviews with historians about the real newsies, Storyboard-to-scene comparisons [with or without commentary]. There is also a section with Newsy vocabulary. It includes pronunciations and definitions. The Sing-Along feature is just lyrics on the bottom of the screen. The only benefits of the Sing-Along [when compared to the English captions], is that the Sing-Along words only appear when they are singing, and it shows more lyrics that are difficult to hear. For example, during "Carrying The Banner", there are a lot of overlapping vocals. The Sing-Along feature shows SOME, not all, of the overlapping lyrics. Other than learning all the words I've been missing, I don't care for this feature because the words appear over the picture, blocking the view of the dancers.

OVERALL:
I am pleased with this DVD. I would give it 5 stars, but because there aren't any deleted scenes [which I would've drooled over], I give it 4 stars instead. I love this DVD and I know that any other Newsies fan would too!
