Summary: It Makes You Think!
Review: I'll give this movie four stars for its incredible cinematography and special effects, for the luminous performance by Oscar-winner Jodie Foster, and for its creative way of expressing one of the greatest philosophical dilemmas of the modern world...the relationship between science and faith. While I thoroughly disagree with much of the philosophical ideas that the movie promotes, I commend the filmmakers for this artistic triumph.

Summary: Spectacular!!! A Movie Which Provoked THOUGHT!!!
Review: I was spellbound by "Contact." Other than the fact that it had knockout special effects as well as flawless direction by Robert Zemeckis, it actually made me think!!! I was refreshed that it could discuss matters such as faith and science openly in a time when everyone is criticized for being "politically incorrect" if they use the word God or religion in a sentence. It made me deepen my views on humanity and its existence in this universe. I know it's corny that a movie did this to me, but aren't great films supposed to do this??

Jodie Foster gave such a powerhouse performance as Ellie Arroway that I think it surpassed many of her previous films. Her work in this film showed why she's a two-time Oscar winner and one of the best actresses today. I think she deserved at least a nomination, if not the award itself, for this movie.

I wish Hollywood would make more mature, intelligent, and moving films like this, films which stir the mind and soul. I also wish that audiences wouldn't keep sending a message that all people are brainless and enjoy the crap that keeps on being dished out to us. Not all people are slasher flick and Adam Sandler fans...

Overall, it was some of the best hours I ever spent watching a movie. And I am looking forward to more films like this in the future...

Summary: Beautiful movie
Review: This movie is not really an action movie. It is not really a sci-fi movie. It's even not really a drama. It's a strange hybrid- your adrinaline rushes during the Machine startup sequence and the actual discovery of the message; it doesn't focus only on the Machine; it doesn't focus only on the lives of the people. It obtains an odd balance between the three factors, something that is rarely seen.

Summary: Great performances
Review: All of the characters here are brilliantly acted except for Matthew McConaughey, whose screen presence is pretty weak. As a non-Christian raised in Asia, I am a bit indifferent to the question raised in this movie. I think, if you're familiar with eastern thought or modern French philosophy, you would find this movie pretty primitive. If your thought about God is provoked by this movie, try Simone Weil's books.

Summary: Sooooo close, but...
Review: "Contact" is a truly a cerebral film that juxtaposes a dependence on science against a belief in Faith. Then, almost without you realizing, it turns this premise around on itself. A wonderful film, packed full of visual symbolism (wow, those colors are everywhere!), it strives for true thought provocation in its audience, only to wimp out with the "18 hours of static" video conference scene at the end. This scene dumps an answer into the laps of all the imbiciles who can't think for themselves or travel the road to a true personal reconciliation between one's faith and one's science, which is where the movie was taking us. Four stars for the effort, but not quite. "Contact" was sooooo close....

Summary: Obviously from the mind of a Genius
Review: This movie has helped me define humanity, my own values, and it has widened my perception of reality. The movie makes you think, and I am sure that is why some people don't like it. If you don't want an intelligent film, don't watch it. If you want to widen your perspective of human life, rent it and watch it.

Summary: A wonderful movie
Review: First I'm gonna clarify a few things... They didn't send someone back because A) they thought it was worthless and didn't do anything and the whole thing was a joke and B) It would cost another billion dollars to rebuild(it was destructed after she used it, remember? Those walls came a tumbling down.)

But this is a good movie that seems like something out of the forties-sixties. Not because it has bad special effects, because it doesn't, but because that was when Hollywood would try new things and controversial ideas and make wonderful movies with wonderful scripts. Now, in the days where everyone is offended at tiny little things, we can't make movies like that anymore. We have to make movies with a multi-racial, wholesome cast that always learns a lesson, even if its a shallow one. Contact has multi-faceted characters, great script, great dialog, and makes you think about your role in the universe. Its funny how this movie produced by an atheist can make value spirituality a little more...

Summary: No Science
Review: I do agree with the guy who wrote review from Los Angeles on May 11, 1999, this movie is about faith, God but REAL science. I can not understand: Since the woman came back without any evidence, why people just keep asking her, why don't they send another man into that wonderful ship again? And this movie just stop here with some words "...I believe that", "...I believe her".... Actually, you could believe anything and nothing real! Question: shall we believe that every one from us has had the outer-space experience in our night dream?

The second star I gave to this movie is for the first 2 minutes and when the woman touching the sky with her finger.

Nothing better than Year 2001 and Year 2010, not at all.

Summary: The Movie of the Century!!
Review: Robert Zemeckis, the director of contact has done a wonderful job in turning Carl sagan's spectacular novel into an astonishing, sensitive, and touching sci-fi movie. If you read the Novel, then you certainly don't want to miss the movie. I've watched the movie 10s of times, everytime, I discover something new, missing. The movie is not just another conventional Hollywood's movie, it immersed with philosophical and romantic impulses that one can fully understand if he/she watched carefully. The best part of the movie in my opinion is the beach part on Vega, It's the best, the best scenery of a beach I've ever seen in my life. I even wished if such place could exist. The movie is a MUST SEE.

Summary: If you're looking for space battles and aliens...
Review: If you're looking for space battles and aliens, go elsewhere. This is a work of science fiction that demands a certain level of intellect in order to understand and enjoy the concepts presented in the film. After it was over, I just sat spellbound reflecting on some of the issues brought up in the film. It is truly one of the great films -- but it's not for everyone.
