Summary: Unacceptable, worthless adaptation
Review: There are no redeeming qualities to this version. The original is perfect, and this adaptation is a complete bastardization. Horrid. No good moments at all.

Summary: The movie is only okay, but ...
Review: This movie is only okay, but the DVD deserves praise for one of its special features. First, though, my review of the film: Although casting Jim Carrey as the Grinch is a stroke of genius, I have wondered ever since encountering the trailer for this live-action remake of the Dr. Seuss classic why Hollywood felt the need to try to improve on the book and the animated television show. upon seeing the film, I can honestly say that this question hasn't been answered for me. I give it high marks for Carrey's performance and the film's visual originality, but the film is basically an example of Hollywood trying to milk a classic for extra bucks. This is particularly ironic, since the film's story line purports to be an outcry against the crass comercialization of Christmas. I'm sure that neither Carrey, who utters a sermonette about said commercialization, nor the filmmakers turned down any of the money they made from it.

I am writing this review mainly because I want to send kudos to Universal Studios for partnering with Descriptive Video Service (DVS) to make the first fully accessible DVD. Contrary to conventional wisdom, many of us who are blind have always loved movies, but in recent years our enjoyment of Hollywood products has been enhanced by the availability of narrated descriptions of a film's visual elements. Heretofore available only through purchase directly from Descriptive Video Service of Boston and other providers, this feature has crept into select theaters on select releases and now finally onto a commercially sold DVD. More importantly, Universal and DVS have made the DVD menu system accessible to those of us who can't read the screen by the use of voice prompts. by the way, if you have a vision problem and weren't aware of these features when you bought this DVD, press 1 on your remote when the first menu screen comes up and you will enter the voice menu system. this will also activate the narrated description if you play the movie or most of the DVD features from the voice menus. I wish these features had been added to a better movie, but Universal and DVS have done a good job and I hope that Hollywood will take a cue from this release and start adding these accessories to other major releases, or at least the voice menus.

Summary: This movie is a "Dow Joneser"
Review: Basketball commentator Dick Vitale uses the term "Dow Joneser" to describe a player whose game is up and down, and never consistent. It is the same way with this film. It is good, even terrific, in spots, and in other places, it borders on awful.

The fault for this movie's inconsistency lies squarely with the editing. The best evidence of this is found in the deleted scenes that are included with the DVD. They're all pretty bad. This would lend creedence to the argument that this film sould have been cut down to 75~80 minutes. Take out those weak scenes and do a "Dumpit to Crumpit"! That particular length worked for Disney for many years, and it would have been a good length for this one also. That would have make the film that much stronger overall.

The biggest reason for this inconsistency is that, fundamentally, the film is trying to stretch a 23-minute animated Tv program (which itself was stretched from a 12-minute book), into a full 105-minute feature. As a result, there are some extremely thin spots. Some of the crude humor that was thrown in not only detracts from the story, but makes it more unsuitable for the kids who make up a decent-sized chunk of this film's target audience.

There are a number of highlights, though. Jim Carrey does a suprisingly good job as the Grinch, most of the time. In classic Carrey style, he takes pauses for commentary on various subjects along the way, with various results. The absolute highlight of the film, which occurs just before he torches the big Christmas tree, is his one-man (one-Grinch?) diatribe on the hideous commercialization of Christmas, much of which is dead-on. He also delivers the best subtle joke not long after. As he is leaving Whoville, he vainly tries to catch a cab. Think Danny Glover here, and you'll get it.

The supporting cast is there, and not much more than that. Their characters are as plastic as their surroundings, except for Cindy Lou Who (Taylor Momsen), who is fairly-well written.

Overall, this yet-another-attempt-as-a-remake-of-a-classic-Tv-show film does an above-average job as remakes go, but still misses the mark.

Summary: TERRIBLE!
Review: Dr. Seuss NEVER would've allowed this movie to be made if he were alive! It was his money grubbing ninny of a wife who gave the nod on this disaster. I'm sure he is turning over in his grave. It was really awful! Not to mention dissapointing considering some of the talent that was involved (Ron Howard directing, Rick Baker providing the makeup, and Sir Anthony Hopkins providing narration)They took FAR to many liberties with the original story simply to drag it out enough to make it movie length. No real Suess fan could possibly enjoy this movie. The only good thing I can say is that the computer animation was done quite well. It was used judiciously and is virtually imperceptible. PASS THIS UP AND GET THE ANIMATED ORIGINAL. It is far, far superior!

Summary: Great Movie for all ages!
Review: Though I was surprised it wasn't identical to the original, I enjoyed this movie tremendously! No one but Jim Carrey could have pulled off this part, his delivery of humor mixed in with the Dr. Suess dialog was priceless. Great for all ages, especially some humor only adults could appreciate. Precious story of the "Real Meaning" of Christmas. This movie is a blessing of laughter.

Summary: Funny!
Review: This is the best. I admit I had doubts about this movie, being a remake and all. No one (except maybe Robin Williams) could do this role as the Grinch so well. I loved this movie.
