Rating: Summary: A great feel-good film Review: While some people may not get into how predictable or unbelievable this film is it nevertheless tells a very true story which was all too common in the early 1960's and which still holds true today. The film follows the story of the One-ders (Wonders after a smart re-christening) who started as a small Erie, PA garage band and experienced a meteoric rise to fame in the innocence of early 60's pop music. The film, while corny in some parts, tells a very poignant story with a refreshing mixture of humour and drama. The band's reaction to the swirling events around them make for a great storyline and an effective lessons-learned presentation of the real world of pop music; everything from marketing and promotion to relationships among band members. Fame can be a wonderful yet damaging experience and this film effectively demonstrated that. Not to mention very funny and lively. A great film.
Rating: Summary: A great look at fame and fortune, and what's important Review: This is a wonderful musical film, following the brilliant rise of a band--despite the rocky personalities of some of the members. A young man is taken into a band when one of them gets sick or injured or whatever (I forget--it's been a while). His amazing drum skills rapidly take the band to local stardom--and then to national stardom, where they remain for a long, long time. But all good things must come to an end, and when one member storms out, life must be restructured for them all. Tom Hanks is the band's agent (and he does a darn fine job too) and Liv Tyler plays the oft-ignored girlfriend of a band leader. She does a good job--her character's plight is very sympathetic, and you cheer at the end. My only quibble is that the band guys all seemed to look alike--it made things quite confusing. But the songs are both fun, danceable, and horribly catchy (I still hum "That Thing You Do", even though it's been a few years since I saw this) Bravo Mr. Hanks--this is a wonderful film. It may not be famous, but it makes up for that in quality.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Piece of Movie-Making! Review: This gem of a film will delight the entire family! Set in Eerie, PA, in the 1960's, a small garage-band hits it big time when their single "That Thing You Do!" makes the charts! Unfortunately, fame and fortune tear the group apart, in a wonderful show of hopes, dreams, and fate. Filled with nostalgic detail, this movie will make you laugh, smile, and maybe even shed a tear. Tom Hanks, thank you for this amazingly well-done movie.
Rating: Summary: Hank's Playfullness At It's Best! Review: Hanks has done it again with "That Thing You Do." He brings us a world of what dreams can come. You Will be singing these songs for days, and lovin Lenny Lot & Lots!
Rating: Summary: You will sing this song for days after viewing! Review: A simple premise turns into a cinema delight! -- Erie, PA, 1964: A talent scout discovers a group of young musicians who happen to have one catchy tune. When given the chance to become stars (Beatles-style!) the 'kids' jump at it. "That Thing You Do" is also the title of the hit song, which you will be swinging to from the beginning until days after the film ended! The ending may not come as much of a surprise, but it is satisfying. -- My favorite scene is when the local radio station plays the groups's song for the first time, and everyone flips out from excitement '...it's our song! ' -- There is no way anyone could NOT love this film. It's proof that Tom Hanks (co-producer/director) can do a lot more than act! Highly recommended!
Rating: Summary: You WILL be singing these songs! Review: This is a wonderful movie for viewers of all ages. My husband and I just watched this for the third time last weekend on TV and I'm buying it for him for Father's Day (I may have to get the soundtrack as well!). The cast is perfect -- my favorite scene is when they hear their song on the radio for the first time! I don't buy a lot of movies to watch again and again, but this one just makes me feel good!
Rating: Summary: swebster Review: If you've never seen this movie before, then see it now! You'll start tapping your toe when Guy puts a "beat" into the title song and you'll grin when you see the crowds go wild over these garage-band hopefuls. I truly enjoyed this movie and have already chalked up another "plus" in Tom Hanks' corner. That Red-shoe, Bachelor-partying, Volcano-jumping, Mermaid-humping, son-of-a-Jackie Gleason, box-o-chocolate shrimp-fishing, Aids ridden, suburban, moon-bound, Ryan-hunting, sleepless e-mailer just keeps getting better and better!
Rating: Summary: MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE MOVIE! Review: That Thing You Do! is an awesome movie. This movie is great the first time around, as well as the 20th. That is why I can consider this my favorite. After I watch a really good movie a 3rd time, I am usually sick of it. However, this movie still creates the same happiness, laughter, and excitement as when I first saw it. I quote this movie all the time. I love everything about it! I want everyone to know how great it is! Rent, buy it, and love it!
Rating: Summary: Best movie in the world nd to make it better its really cute Review: This is the best movie in the world. You would think its a guy movie but its actually more like a girl movie. The first time I rented it, I watched it three times. Now I own it. Tom Everett Scott is just so cute in it. His cuteness level is way off the charts. This movie has good music , good acting, and lots of cuteness. This is one of the cutest movies I own. It should have won an oscar for best song. If you see this movie once you will be addicted to it. Then pretty soon you will own it. It is just so great. It also gives you a look of what it was like be=ack in the 50's. It was actually pretty cool. This movie is grand and definitelly worth the money.
