Summary: Tequila!
Review: The stars at night, are big and bright! (Clap, clap, clap, clap) Deep in the heart of where? Where? Oh, you'll have to buy this baby to find out! Convinced yet? Well, I'll give you some more reasons. If you are remotely interested in Mr Paul Ruebens, I highly recommend a look at this here movie. Pee Wee sets out to find his bike, which has been stolen, and is presumably sitting in the basement of the Alamo. Fine fun along the way, good laughs. You should be reciting half the script by the time it's over, because it's so gosh dang funny. So go for it. Get out your credit card and buy buy buy! And hey! Tell em' Large Marge sent ya. Heh heh heh heh heh!

Summary: This movie scares the heck out of me.
Review: Pee-Wee Herman was a comic genius in the eighties. If you can justforget about what a weirdo he is, you can enjoy this stupid comedy. Itis hilarious, scary, but hilarious. Awe, good ol' movie.

Summary: Great movie, AWESOME DVD
Review: Finally! This movie is LONG overdue on DVD. Most people are familiar with the story and greatness of the movie, so I'm going to focus on the DVD presentation. Great video and spectacular audio make this one to own. The commentary tracks are really fun - one track with Burton and Reubens and another isolated music track with comments by Elfman - pure genious all around and a great chance for all three of these 'seasoned masters' to reminisce on the first feature film for all three of them. If you're a fan of Burton, Pee-Wee, and/or Elfman don't miss this one.

Review: This is an excellent movie. Unfortunately some of the features that were to be included weren't. The disc was missing The MTV pemeire party footage and the stand up routine from Chicago. Still an excellent movie .

Summary: Top-Notch Stuff...but
Review: Great movie if you like a movie you can't categorize- one of the few I'd recommend to all age groups. Anyway, the DVD is awesome, but like another fella noted- not all the DVD extras are included, unless they're hidden...and I mean, I WAS DYING to see the stuff that was left out. (Live Pee-Wee on stage and MTV after party left out) Very disappointing, but other than that- the commentaries are cool, (Tim Burton giggles insanely a lot, but he's interesting) and my favorite was Danny Elfman's comments on his music career and his brilliant music within the movie...he does an amusing take on Pee Wee's voice that I wasn't expecting too.

PLUS! We get to learn where in the hell Amazing Larry came from in a deleted scene and also a great sequence that was cut out of the grande finale chase scene- taking place in the old west.

check it out! great sound and picture quality! Lots of fun all the way.

Summary: A GREAT Film, But A Bit of a Disappointing DVD...
Review: Tim Burton's directoral debut is so chock full of interesting bits and vision that a running commentary by Burton and creator/star Paul Reubens should have resulted in one of the best alternate tracks available on DVD. Unfortunately, their commentary becomes instead The Mutual Admiration Society, with long stories about how they came across each other, how great each thinks the other is, and who else was in the room when they met. Reubens and Burton spend too much time telling stories that ramble and don't go anywhere, and too little time commenting on the film itself.

When they DO manage to discuss the film, they are as interesting as you would expect, but these instances are few and far between. Burton for the most part sounds like he just woke up, and Reubens spends a lot of the film saying, "Uh-huh, yeah."

It's also rather appalling that Reubens can hardly bring himself to say the name of fellow screenwriter Phil Hartman (Reubens early on says "me and the other two guys who wrote the film...") -- in fact, you won't hear him mention Hartman by name until the very end of the film when Hartman makes his cameo.

Some gentle prodding during the taping of this sequence would have produced something that I think more fans were looking for and expecting.

Like some other reviewers, I too couldn't find some of the knick-knacks promised in the pre-release. However, the one real prize on this disc is the alternate track isolating the music, with commentary by Danny Elfman. Elfman's insights into the film and its music are first-rate, and while I'm pleased Elfman does NOT talk over his music, it might have made it even more interesting had he discussed some of the nuances of his work while the tracks were playing.

The film quality on the DVD is top-notch, and the menu screens are clever (when you make a selection, Pee-wee goes speeding over to the new menu on his bike). The film itself is brilliant -- no need on my part to give you a summary -- and the widescreen format and new sound for this film alone would make the DVD worth owning. But with the exception of the Elfman alternative track, many of the first-rate extras viewers are coming to expect in these packages are, sadly, missing here.

Five stars for the film itself, but a low two for the extras, bringing this one to a soft three. Darn it.

Summary: This movie is for anyone!
Review: On Tim Burton's first directorial outing, he takes a somewhat ludicrous idea and makes it pure gold. Combine that with a playful, yet haunting score by master of the haunting, Danny Elfman, and you have a masterpiece.

Not only is the storyline thoroughly consistent, but it also plays host to a wide variety of characters that are wonderfully sculpted. The characters, no just Pee Wee, are so bizarre that it makes it all the more enjoyable to laugh along at the mishaps along the way.

The plot (Pee Wee's bike is stolen, and he goes on a country-wide trip to find it) is excruciatingly hilarious. But at the same time, the story is told in a way that can make the viewer feel sorry for Pee Wee and his circumstances. Paul Reubens has just the right amount of childlike qualities that he added to the role to make that pity possible.

This movie is a gem shining out of Burton's history. A daring experiment that happened to turn out right.

Summary: DVD extras not all there?
Review: First off, this is such a great movie, and I would have bought the DVD even with ZERO extras, but having read in Amazon.com's description that there's supposed to be MTV premier footage, and footage of Pee-wee on stage in Chicago, I was rather dissappointed to notice the complete and total absence of these two items from the disc. Are they on there, but just hidden or something? Like Easter Eggs? If anyone knows, please let me know.

The extras that ARE included are great, and Amazon.com should update their description of the DVD details to mention that there are several cut scenes in the bonus material, and a SECOND audio commentary by Danny Elfman, discussing his musical score.

Summary: Pity the poor fool who don't buy this DVD
Review: I have to wonder what movie Mr. Maltin was watching when he said, "not enough laughs to sustain a feature-length film." Pee-wee's Big Adventure is undoubtedly one of the funniest movies ever made. From the Rube Goldberg-esque breakfast machine to the Hollywood re-make of P.W.'s life story, the laughs do not stop from start to finish. For months, I have been counting the days till the release of this DVD, and (with the exception of the cheesy cardboard "snap case") Warner Bros. has certainly done it right this time! The anamorphic widescreen picture is perfect; Elfman's excellent score sounds incredible in dolby digital stereo; and the extras exceeded my highest expectations. There's a commentary track with Paul Reubens (Pee-wee himself) and director Tim Burton; a music-only track with commentary by composer, Danny Elfman (timed so as not to interfere with the music); and a compilation of story boards and sketches with yet a third commentary by the production designer! In the deleted scenes, you'll learn the origin of "Amazing Larry", meet Boone the Bear, and see Pee-wee fling that (red) boomerang bowtie he bought at the magic shop. This is a disc you'll watch over and over again. Order it now...and be sure and tell 'em Large Marge sent ya!
