Summary: Breaking Away From The Bunch
Review: A classic film about small town America, Breaking Away hits all the right notes in its portrayal of teenagers coming of age and coming to terms with growing up. Breaking Away manages to achieve what few films of recent years have done successfully - give the viewer characters that they can empathise with, root for and understand. Believable and honest in its approach, the film combines humor and truely bittersweet moments in a story about Dave Stohler and his twofold obsession with cycling and everything Italian - he is in fact almost convinced he IS Italian much to the despair of his father and the amusement of his friends. Dave and his friends are at a cross-road in their lives - with the big decisions facing them; what are they to do now that they're leaving school? For most of them there's only the prospect of taking up bad paying jobs or leaving town in search of a future, while the itinerant frat boys are always willing to keep them in their place. For Dave though, his refuge is in the romantic world of Italian bike racing that he has immersed himself in. His portrayal of the lovesick Italian exchange student is particularly endearing, while the awful truth that he faces about the heroes he's idolised for years is a sobering moment in the film. The characters, story line and charm of this little known movie makes it one of the classics that deserve a place in any collector's library. Brilliant.

Summary: An Exciting Comedy-Drama!
Review: This film has some nice insights on family ties and small-town life. A great crowd-pleaser that is never manipulative, and good character development and a fantastic screenplay make it a real audience-rouser. A superb cast give great performances but Paul Dooley is a stand-out as Dave's Father. Exciting bike sequences that are entertaining and funny at times, the excellent final race is superb and provides the perfect ending. It also has some romance and comedy mixed with some dramatic elements. Great attention to detail and quiet direction make this the sleeper hit of 1979. From a scale of 1-10 I give this film an 8!

Summary: The entire cast is fantastic!
Review: What a great movie! This holds a special place in my heart as it was the movie I saw on my first real date (Life of Brian being sold out). I enjoyed it when I was 16...now, 21 years later, I enjoy it even more, now that I'm a cyclist!

The entire cast, including an impossibly young Dennis Quaid and Daniel Stern, is great - but Paul Dooley is the best as the father. He got all the best lines. Who can ever forget the exchange between him and his wife in the film:

Wife: He was very sickly until he started riding that bike.

Husband: Well, now his body's fine but his mind is gone.

And let us not forget Dennis Christopher as the young wannabe Italian whose joy in the sport of cycling just jumps off the screen! Even if you aren't a cyclist, you are sure to enjoy this film (esp at under $10 - what a deal! )

Summary: I can't get enough of this movie.
Review: I cannot say much about this movie because, if I did, I would run out of space. I love this movie, beginning to end. I would ask my health teacher if we could watch this movie in his class, and it came to a point where if I mentioned this movie again, I would get a detention. This movie deserves five stars, but I feel a movie has to be really great to get that rating. This movie reminds me of times in my own life. I guess that is why I love it so much. Get this movie and watch it immediately, you will not be dissappointed.

Review: Okay, I am a teenager who only watched this movie because I was bored. But about ten mintutes into it I was laughing so hard! This movie has humour, romance, and great biking scenes. My Dad says every serious biker has watched this movie. But I think anybody looking for a great movie should definently watch this!

Summary: A Film For The Angels!
Review: In this lovely episodic film that captures Americana and the trials and tribulations of growing up in this challenging world through "biking," all the cast members are superb. This movie not only secured the careers of its four young stars, but inspired an 80's generation of biking and was the subject of a short-lived TV show called Breaking Away; not to mention it made the little town of Bloomington, Indiana a popular international tourist attraction. This movie inspired me personally because it reminded me of the time I won a high school poetry contest in 1957 and I wrote it about a bicycle.

Summary: Breaking away, the bittersweetness of growing up.
Review: I've watched this movie at least 6 times. It never fails to bring a tightness to my throat because it addresses a universal human stage in life. The breaking away from childhood into that freightening, but freedom filled realm of young adulthood is a risk, an odyessy into the unknown. All the questions about "Are we good enough ?" haunt every adolescent. The metaphor of breaking away from the pack in a bike race is clever but you don't need to understand anything about cycling or even sports to understand this movie. Paul Dooley as the father is real and touching. He is every father engaged in that terrible struggle of loving a child who is emerging as an adult, but not understanding the emergence. The movie is dated, it is somewhat corny, the actors are mostly no names (or were at the time), and the bike racing scenes are not very realistic . But the message that life moves on and turns out alright is waiting for us at the end, and the overpowering "sweetness" of the story is timeless. I have enjoyed watching this with my children who as college students understand what this movie is about.

Summary: One of the films that shaped my life
Review: This has to be one of the coolest, most fascinating movies about growing up ever made. I forced so many friends, some 20 years ago, to see this movie, because it was about getting older, loving your parents, loving your Dad, especially, and just about getting over your childhood dreams, which seemed reachable at the time. It remains, a terrific film, one that I would recommend to anyone who needs to bond with a loved one.
