Summary: "Tron" is a fantastic movie!
Review: Although the new DVD of "Tron" does lack many bonus features, the quality of the image and sound is so outstanding that you must buy it anyway. "Tron" is a fun, exciting movie that is visually and aurally unique. A lot of 90s CGI movies have offered audiences nothing much beyond "morphing" (think "Terminator 2") and big monsters (think "Jurassic Park"). Meanwhile, "Tron" offers us an entire world of imagery that never seems obvious or gratuitous. It has held up admirably since 1982, not only because of its special effects, but because of its interesting philosophical implications. There are very few CGI movies (or other movies, for that matter) that even have aspirations toward philosophical implications.

Summary: A VERY BORING MOVIE IS A I HAVE TO SAY
Review: TRON in my opinion was so dull I mean JEFF BRIDGES and the cast look bored and it shows in thier acting. The plot is weak and dull too I mean being inside a computer? a third-grader could've thought that up. My advice is don't see this movie unless you like torture.

Summary: Before its time!
Review: great movie with interesting special effects

Summary: So far ahead of its time & still fun to watch.
Review: I saw this film for the first time when I was 12 years old and thought I'd never see something so creative and imaginative again. I don't know if I have, actually. Disney takes us on a tour inside of computers and shows us a world just different enough and similar enough to our own world to be fascinating and (almost) believable. I wanted to think there were really little programs like CLU and TRON running around inside my old Apple computer, but then again I was 12 years old. This movie had cutting edge special effects, and doesn't look all that dated now. You can really see how the Disney creative team was thinking way off into the future here. I'd love to see this punched up like the Star Wars Trilogy to have slightly more current effects, but the rest stands up as a real jewel in the Disney movie crown. It's fun for adults and for kids, although today's kids may be thinking a bit beyond Tron. Still, I had as much fun watching it now as I did when I was 12 and I can now really appreciate what a great film this really was and still is. Lots of fun!

Summary: A disappointing presentation for the first cyber movie.
Review: Please first note that this review concerns the DVD presentation of TRON and not the movie in itself.

Tron! At last on DVD! And take a look at this mention: "Digitally Mastered", ah!!! It seems that Disney has prepared us a treat, well don't count on it because this DVD is somewhere a disappointment for the home theater enthusiast. But before we address the problems of this presentation, the good points are: - a really good transfer (of course, it's not the Fifth Element but it's still very good), - a great sound (English & French are presented in an amazing 5.1 Dolby Digital mix, Spanish only in Dolby Surround), - an efficient chapter list (without animation) despite a very cold menu.

Now, the FLAWS: - This DVD is not enhanced for widescreen TV's. This means that when you magnify the 2.20:1 widescreen ratio to fit your widescreen TV, the diagonals line appear like "stairs" due to the low resolution of the NTSC standard (that's why recent DVD! s are "enhanced", something ignored by Disney, a real mess for a DVD released in May 98 when "enhanced" technology has been available for a year now), - NO French and Spanish subtitles, a real error for one of Disney's most adult movie, - Supplemental material limited to -only- a full screen theatrical trailer (with a very dirty image quality), a price ... which is unnaceptable for such an empty presentation.

The worst thing here is to compare this DVD to the "Archival" Laserdisc Boxed Set. As a matter of fact, DVD technology would have had the advantage to present "archival" datas (pun intended) of the laserdisc like the trailers (more than one here), the behind the sceen footage, the pre-production tests and art, the commentaries, the deleted love scene (...) and with a better image quality. This DVD was also the opportunity to propose the boxed set at a reduced price (well, between $100 & $300, there is a difference) but Disney has completely missed the occasion here and what we have is a ... DVD I can't recommend. There's simply not enough material on this disc to justify the price so my advice here is: invest $100 on the laserdisc boxed set or buy this DVD but only on Amazon.com where the ... price tag is much more reasonnable.

Summary: A science-fiction classic...
Review: Tron (1982, PG) was originally shunned by critics and hated by the general public, but as our knoweldge of computers and technology grew, we came to understand and enjoy this triumph in filmmaking more. Boasting computer-generated sets and effects never before seen in a film, TRON gave us the idea of 'what if there is a world inside our computers and video game machines much like ours?' Tron came through with a great plot and acting, and a superb score by famed synth musician Wendy Carlos. I assure you, if you watch this film, you will never ever look at your IBM or Sega Saturn the same way again. END

Summary: Worth it for the outdated hairdos on disc 2
Review: Years ago, the only way to see TRON was on video, a terrible pan and scan experience considering the care with which Lisberger & Co. designed and filmed TRON. Now the DVD version has been reissued with a second disc absolutely BURSTING with bonuses.

Disc 2 is one of those well-designed DVDs with production art, outtakes, alternate music cues, all accessible via the arrow keys. Best of all are the well-known outtakes, Tron and Yori's "love scene" and "morning after" scene, alternate end titles (with Wendy Carlos' music, not the Journey song), dozens of sketches and production art by Syd Mead and Moebius. Possibly best of all is a new, 88 minute (!) documentary on the film: great interviews, production photos, reminisces from cast and crew, and more embarrassing hairdos and fashions from the late 70s, early 80s, than anyone'd care to admit to.

What makes TRON an enduring classic is that it bridged two eras of old-fashioned filmmaking and animation, with a new realm of digital, computer-generated (CG) imagery, still in its infancy. The story line itself bridged two eras of corporate computing resources and "popular computing," as it came to be known. TRON prophesied the revolution in "online" culture and politics, e.g. corporate control versus free access, information security versus open source, and even took a swipe at intellectual property rights. Children of the 21st Century info age need to see this film, if only to realize that "mom and dad" came from an era of 8-bit video games, teletype computer monitors, and ... the "personal computer" was still a revolutionary idea. TRON is a bit of history, but the bonus is that it's still a fun, entertaining movie. I sure hope that Lisberger can come up with a second film.

Summary: GREETINGS PROGRAM.
Review: If I could choose one word to describe "Tron", I would have to say "awesome". This movie has it all: exceptional special effects (particularly for its time), an excellent musical score by composer Wendy Carlos and 2 very cool songs by Journey ("Only Solutions" & "1990's Theme"), above average acting by a very likeable cast including Jeff Bridges, Bruce Boxleitner & David Warner, as well as a very well-written & interesting storyline.

If you're a fan of the old Atari video games from the late '70s and early '80s, as I am, you're in for a real treat. You'll feel as though you're actually living inside one of those old games as you follow Tron, Flynn & and the rest of their "computerized" companions on their mission to overthrow the evil leader, Sark, and the power-hungry Master Control Program.

Again, I must say that this truly is one of the best films I've ever seen. As far as sci-fi/fantasy films go, I'd have to rank this one right up there with "Star Wars" and any other fine film of the genre.

As with any fine wine, "Tron" is one of those increasingly rare films that only improves with age. If you haven't seen this one yet, make it a point to do so in the near future. You really are missing out if you don't. I'd also like to recommend that you see "The Black Hole" (1979) & "Condorman" (1981), also great sci-fi/fantasy films made by Disney. And don't forget Disney's epic fantasy adventure "20,000 Leagues Under the sea" (1954).

As for the long term fans of "Tron", it might interest you to know that a sequel is currently in the pre-planning stages, with Steven Lisberger to again write and direct. If anybody has any up-to-date info on the subject of the sequel, please e-mail me (my address is listed here). Thanks.

END OF LINE.
