Summary: It should have had a better ending
Review: I really like this movie. I just was left wishing that they had done a sequel. It seemed to me that so many questions were left unanswered. I don't know about the quality of the DVD since I have the movie. My sister got it at Walmart a few years ago. I will let my kids see it when they get old enough to understand the story. They are only 1 and 2 now.

Review: I really loved this movie when I first saw it & would love to have it on dvd, but sadly, Disney has decided not to release the movie that I saw, they decided to release only 1/2 of it.

Set in the Depression, Natty Gann runs away from the woman her father had left her with when he got a job in the Pacific Northwest. Her journey is truly exciting as she dodges Child Welfare, befriends a wolf and meets up with John Cusack. In the meantime, her father has to search for her when he finds she's missing. Definitely an overlooked gem of a film. I will definitely buy this when Disney chooses to release the entire movie.

Summary: a little gem- 2 stars for the dvd, 4 for the film
Review: I recently saw this movie again on cable, and concur with other reviewers that the dvd is a waste of time. This movie is a rarity for family fare in that it is uncompromising and un-sappy. It treats the depression theme in a very mature way, but the journey itself transcnds what could be a very dark and somber mood throughout the movie. Interesting to me that it was all filmed no more than 15 km. from my neighbourhood in Vancouver . Seeing it for the second time 20 years later, I got to see a small slice of my past- the old train station, the law courts building, etc.

Summary: Wallet in the ashes
Review: I remember wandering into my den as a young boy and shuffling through my stash of tapes. Scribbled on them were words such as "Never Ending Story", "The Secret of Nimh", "Muppets take Manhatten", "Old Yeller", "The Princess Bride", "The Dark Crystal", "Star Wars", "Karate Kid", and "Pinnocchio". Now, on the same tape, written beneath pinnocchio, and that soap we accidentally recorded once, was this movie, Nattie Gann.

When I pulled it from the others, I knew that I was going to cry. I was a soft hearted little bugger back then. (That one Benji with the couger cubs nearly put me in the hospital. Heck, even "hug-a-bunch" made me cry.) But, even as a child I knew what a good movie was. Those were the days when Marty was racing through time, trying to hook up his parents; when your best pals were a couple of Goonies. Nattie, was just another one of the guys, so to speak.

Nattie is a tough bird, fighting any boy that crosses her, and puffing cigs in the guy's bathroom. Her dad gets a job when work was hard to come by. The only catch is that its far away. When he leaves her with the sinister "Connie", Nattie ventures out into the world of the great depression. On her way she befriends the wolf, survives a train crash, and falls in love with a young John Cusack.

Even though this release is poor, it may hold you over until Disney wakes up from whatever sleep they are in. I'm not going to totally bash the big D, because they have done some spectacular dvd's, but that doesn't change the matter. If you fervently remember taking the journey along side Nattie Gann when you were younger as I did, or are in search of a great story, begin here. I think I'll cook me an egg sandwich. ~s.a.o.s.~

Summary: Outstanding family viewing
Review: I saw this movie several years ago on the Disney Channel and have been looking for it on video ever since. Unfortunately, I find it is not available, which in a shame. The movie is one of those obscure films that gets little recognition for its quality. I would recommend it to anyone that is looking for a great movie that the entire family would enjoy. The only problem is finding it. The film is about a young girl and her father who had to leave her in Depression era Chicago to get work in the timber camps of the Northwest. The journey is filled with many types of adventures and encounters along the way.

Summary: Pan and Scanned...what a waste!
Review: I was all set to buy this this morning until I saw on the packaging that it is pan and scanned. Sorry I absolutely will not fork over my bucks for a pan and scanned film no matter how much I like it. I love JOURNEY OF NATTY GANN but I despise pan and scan. They should have included two versions but obviously Disney only caters to one audience for some reason.

Summary: The Journey of Natty Gann
Review: I've been trying to buy this video for my granddaughter, whose dad is at sea six months of the year. An A student with a sentimental sense, I'm sure she would love a film like this that doesn't pander to the lowest denominator. Frankly, I can't believe this is a Disney film. There's not a bit of their usual sentimentality. Children and parents will truly enjoy it.

Summary: my favorite movie
Review: It's simply too bad that one of the best films to come out of Disney is not being released on home video. Every time I see this movie I feel like I'm right there with Natty Gann on her journey. I'm 30 years old, and still tear up every time I see the ending. It's such a well-written and well-crafted film.

Summary: A classic in its own right
Review: Natty Gann is well on its way to being a timeless classic for the whole family; its poignantly honest depiction of the Great Depression remains a vivid, rich history lesson in a big painterly style. The main characters are heartfelt without being sappy. Meredith Salenger as Natty is just amazing to watch; she's both feisty tomboy-kid and emerging young woman... her journey is personal, historic and adventurous. Her wolf companion (played by the most wolf-looking dog in the world!) steals every scene, especially as their bond deepens. The gradual friendship between the two is actually believable! All the supporting characters are terrific; fully drawn-out. Having grown up with many earlier Disney live-action films being of a much more saccharine and inauthentic quality, I still am impressed with how ageless of a movie Natty Gann actually is. The direction is stylish, the wilderness scenes are breathtaking and James Horner's music is sweeping. What a well-made movie!

Summary: A well made Disney fillm ruined by Full-Frame DVD
Review: Once again we are disappointed in the Walt Disney Company's refusal to release its films in their original theatrical ratios (widescreen). "The Journey of Natty Gann" is a beautifully made film, but viewers will not be able to see half of the film in this pan and scan version.

The film receives three stars, but the DVD receives one.

We will not purchase this DVD untl it is released in widescreen. We suggest you do the same.
