Summary: Atlantis - It should've stayed lost
Review: First off let me say that I'm a fanatical Disney fan and have been for many, many years. Which is precisely why I was so unimpressed with Atlantis. Most of us have been waiting anxioulsy for Disney to take some bold risks and try something completely new for years now. Atlantis was our hope of such a change, but unfortunately it's the just the same tired old story wraped up in ugly drawings and a story with more holes than a fish net. I've read that a lot of time went into the creation of the culture of Atlantis and it's inhabitants but sadly none of that ends up on screen. Who are these mysterious people who can live hundres of years and produced machines and science way before the rest of humanity? We never find out. Atlantis attempts a bold style like Hercules, Sleeping Beauty and Mulan did, but fails. The drawing style is too angular and messy (chek out the lips on Audry) and poor Milo's face gets riddled with lines when he gets too excited. Also, characters don't blend in well with the beautiful backgrounds and neither do the computer generated elements. With an unattractive style, bland characterizations and a sloppy plot the movie quickly falls into typical summer movie mode and looses any credibility. How did Atlantis get inside a giant cave underwater? Why can Kida remember her childhood, but can't read her own language? Why do we care? Well, really you're not suppsed to. It's all about the battles and special effects.If you like fast paced, mindless action with little characterization (think The Mummy Returns) then this film is for you. If not, stay away. Let's hope Disney gets it right with the next one Treasure Planet.

Summary: Simply an amazing experience
Review: I have to admit that before I had seen this movie, my thoughts on it were rather conflicted. I discovered probably too much about the movie for it to surprise me with any of its plot twists and what-nots, so I felt as though I knew all of what the movie was composed of. I was definitely wrong there. The basic idea of the movie involves a rather rejected college employee, Milo Thatch (played by the almost brilliant voice of Michael J. Fox). His attempts to make the elite of the university see his beliefs in the existence of the supposedly lost city of Atlantis lead to a chance meeting (seemingly chance) with a mysterious "messenger" named Helga Sinclair (Claudia Christian), Milo is introduced to the somewhat secluded life of his late grandfather's friend, Preston Whitmore (voiced by an eccentric John Mahoney). Whitmore offers Milo an adventure he can't refuse, an expedition to Atlantis. Milo's crew on the Atlantis voyage include the rather devious Lyle T. Rourke (James Garner), the clever explosives expert Vincenzo Santorini (a hilarious Don Novello), Dr. Joshua Sweet (Phil Morris), the mechanic Audrey Ramirez (Jacqueline Obradors), the humorous geologist Gaetan Moliere (Corey Burton), the amusing chef "Cookie" (voiced by the late Jim Varney), and the adorable switchboard operator Bertha Packard (Florence Stanley). The crew expands the limitations of animation on their journey through amazing underwater battles, fiery volcanoes, and a simply amazing display of action and adventure. What I admire most about Atlantis: The Lost Empire is the simple fact that it doesn't mar itself with embarrassing contemporary ideals or ridiculous characters (like the over-hyped Shrek). It maintains a good level of ingenuity in its own amazing way and, although I believe it is more intended for the older child (9-12), it offers a good blend of appeal for those of all ages. I highly recommend this film for any family (and, heck, even for adults) looking for a good time. The performances are amazing and so is the animation. This summer definitely belongs to Disney. Summary: Not a movie for Children
Review: I took my daughter to this G-rated movie and was very dissapointed to find Disney had couched a poorly re-made animated version of Raiders of the Lost Arc in a so-called movie about Atlantis. I suppose I should not have expected higher quality writing--but I certainly did not expect rampant, unrepentent voilence. The story of the mythical world was completely missing from this graphically violent cartoon full of death and distruction--which gets wholly brushed off by the characters This is NOT a movie for children should not be billed as such.

Summary: Nicotine Pusher
Review: I was very disappointed to see that Disney chose to make one of the characters a chain smoker. This is a movie for children and it is inappropriate to introduce this type of character in a children's film. Is Disney getting money from the tobacco industry to promote the addiction of nicotine? Is this why they wrote a chain smoker into a children's movie? Also there was a lot of fighting and harshness from the characters. I give it 2 thumbs down!!!

Summary: A change in heart
Review: ... I'm still left wanting to give Disney credit for trying out something different, yet the truth is that there were so many things wrong with the film that it never should have received such a high rating from me. Perhaps this is all getting put into perspective by Lilo and Stitch--a success on the part of Disney, or at least enough of a success that it has made me realize how much else by Disney hasn't been one. Truth be told, Atlantis stank just like so many other poorly conceived attempts. I would love to enjoy the sci-fi elements of this film, but it is regularly undermined by Disney's incomprehensible desire to attempt to appeal to all demographics (even if their films do better when they don't!) The end of this film made no sense, and far too much of the film felt derivitive of other things (derivative, not nostalgic), that it is really hard to say that much good about it other than it wasn't 100% fluff. At least it wasn't Hunchback of Notre Dame. C'mon Disney, your the biggest animation studio in the world, can't you make a film that doesn't require comparisons to worse films to justify their validity?

Summary: it didn't seem like disney
Review: As much as i liked the movie as a whole, Atlantis proved to be a giant step for the Disney production crew as far as an animated film is concerned. The animation itself was astounding, and the visual effects were brilliantly done, and the preface of the plot itself did more for the movie than anything...but the only thing that held me back from bowing my head in defeat was the fact that the movie shyed away from the Disney outline and was more similar to that of an animation film from Dreamworks than one from Disney, both which usually differentiate greatly. This is what upsets me. Yes, there was a lack of music, and though it may be good for some in contrast to others, it proved to be the single solitary factor that pulled the movie itself away from typical Disney movies and provided a "too much change too quick" ideal. I find that the reason Disney has as much success as it does with animation films is because of the catchy and brilliantly written songs, which, in turn, gave the movies that certain edge that attracted more of an audience than, say, a typical Titan A.E or Road to El Dorado. It is sad to see the concept not used in Atlantis because, for me anyway, it took away a great part of the reason that i go see a Disney movie in the first place. As much as the movie was visually stunning...as much as the movie's characters captivated me and the historical representation of Atlantis itself thrilled me and was, dare I say, enlightening, it just didn't seem to me like a disney movie which is, saddly, something which the movie could have used to take it to a greater and more entertaining level.

Summary: Not much plot, inconsistent animation
Review: This review is for adults -- my children (age 8 and 5) loved this film. I, however, did not particularly care for it. There is not much of a plot and no real character development. But, hey, it's Disney! My real beef is with the animation. It's very strange -- some characters look like classic Disney (think "101 Dalmatians") and some look like Japanese anime and one looks like a reject from Saturday morning cartoons. So, very inconsistent animation plus no plot equals...a good opportunity to sit in the air-conditioned dark eating popcorn with your children. Go if you must, but be prepared. It's not as bad as "Pokemon: The Movie", but it's close.

Summary: I liked it. It's a departure from the normal formula......
Review: OK, granted....it's not as good as Lion King, or Beauty & the Beast but it's a step in a new direction...(unfortunatly, they have to work on a more cohesive story line). There are too many characters that needed more developement, & the love interest is not developed enough.

Summary: Excellent!!!!
Review: I fully recommend this movie! It is wonderful - the effects are great and the story is different from anything Disney has done prior. The absence of singing characters adds to the uniqueness of the movie. I had been looking forward to seeing Disney's take on action/adventure ever since I first saw the trailer for Atlantis. I had the opportunity to see Atlantis: The Lost Empire early at the El Capitan theater in Los Angeles. I already want to see this again - but I have to wait until the 15th now! :)

Review: Milo Thatch an enthusiastic young a bookworm/boiler room attendant/linguistics expert who inherits the "Shepherds Journal" from his Grandfather, a map to the legendary lost city of Atlantis. He is soon sponsored by a billionaire and along with his captain and crew they search for Atlantis, Milo unknowing that they will find danger, beauty, underwater machines, a living civilization and love. Before long the fate of Atlantis and their lives is in his hands and his Grandfather's book.
