Summary: The Best Movie Ever!
Review: I went to see Holes the day it came out expecting it to be pretty good. It turns out it was fantastic! Holes is about this boy Stanley (Shia Lebeouf) who is wrongly accused of something and is sent to Camp Greenlake where he is to dig one hole 5 feet tall 5 feet wide everyday. But what are they really digging for? The boys are told they are digging to build character, but throughout the movie they find out otherwise. The movie jumps back and fourth between three different time periods, but it's not that hard to follow, especially if you have read the book. The movie is a lot like the book, probably because the author of Holes (Louis Sachar) also wrote the screenplay. You should definetly see (and read) Holes. I've seen the movie four times!

Review: "You take a bad boy, make him dig holes all day long in the hot sun, it makes him a good boy. That's our philosophy here at Camp Green Lake" Says Mr. Sir, the overseer of a juvenile work camp, in the middle of the desert, that is surrounded by holes, 5 feet deep and 5 feet wide. There punishment at Camp Green Lake is to dig one hole a day, day after day. The director is Andrew Davis ("The Fugitive") and the cast includes not only talented young stars but also adults such as Jon Voight, Sigourney Weaver, Tim Blake Nelson and Patricia Arquette. The story involves Stanley Yelnats IV (Shia LaBeouf) as a good kid who gets charged with a crime, although it was no fault of his own, and is shipped off to Camp Green Lake, which is little more than a desert bunkhouse surrounded by holes. There he meets his fellow prisoners and the threatening management staff: Mr. Sir (Jon Voight) and Mr. Pendanski (Tim Blake Nelson) report to The Warden (Sigourney Weaver), and both men are frightened by her. "Holes" involves two flashback stories. We learn that Stanley comes from a long line of Yelnatses (all named Stanley, because it is the last name spelled backward). From his father (Henry Winkler) and grandfather (Nathan Davis), he learns of an ancient family curse, traced back many generations to an angry fortuneteller (Eartha Kitt). The other flashback explains the real reason that the Warden wants the boys to dig holes; it involves the buried treasure of a legendary bandit named Kissin' Kate Barlow (Arquette). There is a link between these two back-stories, because of Zero (Khleo Thomas), who becomes Stanley's best friend and shares an exciting adventure with him. Zero runs away, absolutely ignoring Mr. Sir's warning that there is no water for miles around, and when Stanley joins him, they find ancient clues and much surprise. "Holes" is probably one of the best films released by a major film studio in a long time. The film wasn't only creative and extremely mind-blowing, but it lives up to the book's superior qualities. It would be hard for a young reader to disapprove of this film. The look of "Holes" has a dignified image. We feel we are actually in a vast desert. I walked in expecting a movie for younger children than I, and walked out feeling satisfied and maybe even a bit smarter. It is amazing how much more sophisticated this film was than recent films released in the past few weeks. For instance: Anger Management, House of 1000 Corpses, Bringing Down the House, etc. "Holes" is a comical, family filled-fun adventure that really is suitable for all ages. I enjoyed myself greatly.

Review: finally i see one of the greatest adaptions of all time the one and only best selling book movie holes this movie was great entertaining laughable and witty smart this is really a 4 star movie while not being great that doesnt mean its not good see this movie when you can or just give your self a break and take your family, date ,etc to see this film i know for sure that the dvd is mine for sure when it comes out great movie holes is a thumb up trust me you will like it---- Critic Ben N.

Review: i saw this movie opening day and i loved it! the plot might be hard to follow for younger ones, and it has some scary moments, but i believe they'll like it. the only thing i have to complain about are the adults. they try, but the kids are really the ones who bring magic to the movie.

Review: Not only did "Holes" remain faithful to the story of the original, award-winning book; it also correctly changed book-type story-telling techniques to movie-type story-telling techniques where appropriate. One thing I noticed when the movie was over was that a number of people near me were saying, "Hey, that was really good," in a surprised tone of voice, as if they only went along to take their child. So even if you think it doesn't sound like the kind of movie you'd like, go see it. You might be surprised. Then, if you do like it, go read the book. And then go read the rest of Louis Sachar's books, and discover one of the best, funniest children's writers in the business.

Review: With a screenplay adapted by the book's author, "Holes" comes close to being a perfect family film. Featuring a bravura cast of newcomers and veterans, the movie is neither insulting to the adult nor patronizing to the child. At almost two hours long, the movie doesn't lose any steam. It involves the viewer from the first frame until the end with a story line that is appealing and intriguing. The frequent flashbacks are executed well, never distracting from the events unfolding in the film's present-day scenes. Young actors Shia Lebeouf ("Stanley"/"Caveman"), Khleo Thomas ("Zero"), Jake M. Smith ("Squid"), Byron Cotton ("Armpit"), Brenden Jefferson ("X-Ray"), Miguel Castro ("Magnet"), and Max Kasch ("Zig-Zag") hold their own with the more experienced Jon Voight, Siqourney Weaver, Tim Blake Nelson, and Patricia Arquette - mesmerizing as "Kissin' Kate Barlow". The mature audience will also relish the small but pivotal appearances by Henry Winkler as Stanley's father and Eartha Kitt as a Latvian gypsy. The film could easily rate 1/2 star higher.

Review: This a wonderfully made movie! THe plot is the best part, how it matches with everything and it fits well. I think its better than the book. THe story is about a boy name Stanley Yelnats. He is being cursed from his great great grandfather, who forgot to do something very important, so Stanley is being transported to Camp green LAke, a dentention center for bad boys. But really, Stanley did not do any crime. He later finds out why he digs holes and the purpose about a secret about something that is buried underbneath the area. This movie is awesome! Must watch!!!

Review: I really wasn't sure about this movie. I've never read the book, and to be honest I didn't even know what this movie was about (never even saw a preview). But I read some professional reviews about the film and on a hunch decided to give this film a try. I'll spare a synopsis of the film as you can easily get that from any of the numerous other reviews. I'll just add that Holes is a very creative story about things coming full circle and everything eventually setting itself right. There were some problems I had with the film however. I was a bit disappointed how obvious every twist and turn of the plot was. Don't get me wrong, the plot is great and the twists and turns are perfect, but would be a lot more powerful if you didn't see them coming from a mile away. It strongly gives the impression that this was done for a younger audience that might not understand the complexities of the plot. As such, the film seems rather simple and childish at points. For the most part, the casting and the acting in the film is pretty good. While none of the kids are the next Hally Joel Osmet, they aren't bad. Two of the antagonists of the film played by Sigourney Weaver and Jon Voight are spot on with just the right amount of "camp" and "cliche" to their characters. I coulda done without the main characters bumbling family but that's Disney for you, and kids should like it. In all, Holes is pretty much what critics are saying about it. It's got a nice creative story, and it truly is a movie everyone can enjoy. It's not the best it could be, but movies of this type (ie Goonies) don't get any better.
