Review: Decades after the heyday of movie musicals, and years before "Moulin Rouge" ... there was "NEWSIES."

It's been 10 years since "Newsies" came out (and largely flopped) in theaters. But its many fans (gathered with the video release) are still excited about this movie -- and it's not hard to see why.

"Newsies" is set in 1899 in New York. Before the days of home delivery and newsstands, the newsboys sell papers on the streets. When publisher Joseph Pulitzer (Robert Duvall) starts charging the newsies more for the papers they sell, the boys decide to strike. Led by Jack Kelly (Christian Bale) and David Jacobs (David Moscow), they stand up to intimidation. Along the way, they are helped by a newspaper reporter (Bill Pullman) and a vaudeville performer/theater owner (Ann Margret). The story is uplifting and the actors are all excellent. They sing well, too.

The music by Alan Menken (The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Little Shop of Horrors) is good enough to please even hard-core musical fans. At the same time, though, "Newsies" is loved even by people who don't usually like musicals. (My siblings all love it, but they don't like musicals.) Most of the songs are high-energy, catchy and fun, while "Santa Fe" is a great ballad.

Along with the great songs, the dancing in "Newsies" is a fantastic highlight -- very athletic and energetic, with flips and other amazing moves.

About the DVD: Special features include making-of featurettes, the true story, trailers and commentary. The making-of segments are the best of the special features and include cast interviews and footage from filming and dance rehearsals. The true story feature also is very interesting; the movie changes details of the strike but has a surprising amoung of historical accuracy. The commentary isn't great, but it does have some good information on making the movie. (I was not pleased, though, when Kenny Ortega said the DVD would have deleted scenes, which it doesn't.)

"Newsies" is an excellent movie -- with fantastic dancing, wonderful songs, an inspiring story and a great cast!

Summary: Simply in the wrong place at the wrong time
Review: The world was not ready for a return to the days of the movie-musical when "Newsies" was released in 1992. A box-office flop, it has quickly risen to cult classic status with fans everywhere. Newsies is based on the true story of the New York newsboys' strike of 1899. Granted, Disney is guilty of "improving the truth a little", but doesn't any musical, where people break out in spontaneous song and dance, require one to put reality aside for a while? This film tells the tale of the newsies, led by tough, street-smart Jack Kelly (Christian Bale) and intelligent, reasonable David Jacobs (David Moscow), who form a union when Joseph Pulitzer (Robert Duvall) ups the price of newspapers from fifty to sixty cents a hundred. The street children - with names like Racetrack (Max Casella), a compulsive gambler who steals many scenes with his wisecracks - are aided by a newspaper reporter named Brian Denton (Bill Pullman). Together the unlikely company endures many troubles, including run-ins with the police and their leader's betrayal, throughout the strike. The actors are believable as poor orphans and runaways during the turn of the century, and one look at any of them shows that they've poured their heart and soul into this movie. The lack of depth in some characters - especially Sarah (Ele Keats) and Medda Larkson (Ann-Margret), roles that serve no discernable purpose other than sex appeal - is my only qualm with the film. Looking past that and the many continuity errors (some of which are actually quite amusing), this is a highly enjoyable movie for the entire family to share. Not a masterpiece, but plenty of entertainment!

Summary: Newsies Rocks my Sox!
Review: Wow. This movie has got to be one of the best ever. I was visiting a friend in St. Louis who had gone to a musical camp, and they watched it there, and she made her mom go out and get it for us. We watched it 5 times! It really is that good. It's got great singing and dancing, an awesome story line, catchy songs, and plus it's based on real events. And Christian Bale is sooooo cute! If you haven't seen it yet, go rent it NOW!

Summary: One in a million!
Review: I'll admit that musicals aren't my favorite thing to watch. However, this movie is entertaining on a level that makes the song and dance numbers more of a supporting element. Christian Bale is excellent as always and Bill Pullman gives a great supporting performance worth seeing (he sings and dances, too!). The movie is great for the family and deals with some important issues about friendship and loyalty.

Summary: Seize The Day-- And Buy This DVD
Review: This is probably one of the most well-written musicals ever made. "Newsies" is a rare treasure in the history of cinema. With delightful characters, an inspirational story(based loosely on actually events)--this a movie that everyone can enjoy.

What makes this musical stand out from the rest is the beautiful show stopping songs that are just inspirational--not to mention the impressive dance squences. You and your children will be inspired to go out and change the world(The best part of this movie is that after your children watch it they will feel like they can).

Buy or watch this movies with your children trust me this is one to have in your collection!

Summary: Newsies DVD/Movie Review
Review: The movie Newsies is a very good, recent musical. Chrisitan Bale is awesome, as always, portryaing the newsie striker Jack Kelley, and David Moscow playing his sidekick, David. The movie is a tad bit long, but is well tied together with the musical and dancing numbers. Its fun to watch and learn more about each individual newsie; though, they can be hard to keep track of. This movie incorporates romance, action, and drama very well, and hey, who doesn't love watching newsies singing and dancing through the streets of New York, especially when they're all so darn cute?

Summary: a must see
Review: I first saw Newsies when i was about 11 and loved it!... but until recently i had totally forgotten about it. the fabulous dance sequences kept popping into my head as a was supposed to be paying attention in my American Government class.. so I finally watched it again and fell completely in love with it all over again even now that I am 16. but i guess it doesnt help that i am a complete sucker for musicals. anyways all my rambling comments bring me to my point that Newsies is a movie that all ages will love and that will bring memories that you will never forget.
