Summary: They just don't make them like this anymore...
Review: Although dated by today's standards, I was, and am, totally captivated by this wonderful gem of a movie. Anne Shirley (formerly Dawn O'Day) captures the essence of the role, while making us laugh, cry, roll our eyes, and eventually embrace her character. The supporting actors are equally at the top of their craft. I love this movie, and hope others will take a look back at the first version, and embrace it as well.

Summary: LM Montgomery's opinion
Review: I didn't rate this movie because I haven't seen it, though I am purchasing it anyway. I am a huge fan and even have the complete published set of L. M. Montgomery's journals. This movie was made in her lifetime and she met the actress who played Anne as well as attended the preview and she wrote extensively about the movie in her journal.

She HATED the movie. She said that though the actress was nice, her characterization of Anne was all wrong and Matthew was not at all what she imagined when she wrote him.

I wonder how she would feel about th 1980's Anne movies?

Summary: Anne of Green Gables
Review: I loved these books when I was growing up; the Anne series is great. And, even though this movie didn't follow the book, if you think about it just as a movie and not in relation to the book, it's actually very good.

It centers around an orphan named 'Anne Shirley' (I started laughing when I saw the name of the actress that played Anne) and life at her new home, Green Gables.

Favorite part of the movie? Anne's parts with Gilbert Blythe (Tom Brown). Like I said: the movie is WAY different from the book, especially on this account. I, for one, hated the long wait from book one to book three 'til Anne and Gilbert finally ended up together... but, still. It seemed a little odd to have Anne go from hating him to loving him in the space of a few short minutes, but it worked out all right in the end.

Rating: PG. Definitely. There is NOTHING bad in this movie; kids would love it.

Summary: DO NOT WATCH THIS MOVIE if you like Anne of Green Gables
Review: I made the mistake of watching it after seeing how many stars (4) it received from other viewers. The plot was butchered, the characters twisted, the story ruined, a pure agony.

Marilla is fat and ugly. Wasn't it supposed to be Rachel Lynde's character? Matthew is sly and conniving and very outspoken. What happened to endearing shy Matthew? Rachel Lynde had been merged with Mrs. Barry, Dianna's mother, and hence Mrs. Rachel Barry (Oh brother). Dianna is a petit blond and not a dimpled raven black haired damsel, who gets married behind the scenes without her bosom friend who was sent to Queens at 18 as a punishment. Anne and Gilbert are secret lovers brutally separated by Marilla who is crossed with Gilbert's father for stealing Matthew's sweetheart many years ago. Get the picture?

This movie has no merits as related to the book. It might have some as a stand-alone creation but I haven't found any. I wasted nearly an hour and a half of my life and was bitterly disappointed, irritated and nauseated. The creators of this movie were definitely not kindred spirits! Do yourself a favor, if you really like the Anne books don't watch this movie.

Oh, and I do wish Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings) will fall in love with the books and make proper and ACCURATE movies out of them. Do you hear me Peter?

Summary: not a very good adaptation
Review: i must admit, i didnt see the whole movie. in fact, i caught the last 40 minutes or so. but i saw enough to know that ill never want to see it again. why? because gilbert and anne had a forbidden love type thing going on in the woods somewhere, where marilla found out and put a stop to it, post haste. then gilbert became doctor or something and saved matthews life, so he never died in the movie, as i recall. it was enough for me to reach for the barf bucket. how could they butcher one of my favorite books so terribly? if you are an avid anne fan, such as myself, please do be warned. maybe the beginning was wonderful, and the end was just bad (really really bad) but i guess its up to you to be the judge.

Summary: Loved It!
Review: I watched this movie several times and liked it very much, yes it's not as good as the movies starring Megan Follows but they were mini series type movies and were longer and so had more time but I still like the older movie and liked the actress who played Anne though the sequel Anne of Windy Poplars was pretty bad but it was only the plot that was bad in that movie and not the actors. I recommend this movie but not it's sequel. This was recently on TCM and I was going to tape it but forgot to set my VCR timer and I'm happy that this is now on DVD and I would really love to buy it as well as the DVds for the movies starring Megan Follows.
