Rating: Summary: Excellent for DVDs but very disappointing for MP3s Review: I bought this unit but returned it after two days. It was a very good unit for watching DVDs and if that's all you'll use it for then you'll be happy. But the unit bills itself as a MP3 player also. Well, it does, in fact, play MP3s but, only in alphabetical order of file name. No random order. Not even in the order the files are burned onto the CD. Imagine burning a CD with 8-10 hours of your favorite music and then having to listen to them only in alphabetical order, the same song by two different artists always played back-to-back. Sonys answer to this problem? Their manual suggests renaming all your files so they are alphabetically in the order you want them to play. Seems like a bad joke to me. In the past I've prefered to buy only Sony equipment. I have a Sony TV, DVD, VCR, receiver, speakers, and even digital cable box. But now I find myself having to get off the Sony train. I'll give it 5 stars for DVDs but only 1 star for MP3s so overall I'll give it a disappointing 3 stars.
Rating: Summary: absolutley flawless Review: I just bought this as a replacement for my Toshiba that was a few years older. I bought this mainly because I just got a 36in HDTV widescreen and wanted good progressive scan capabilities and optical sound output to my new receiver. This DVD is fantastic I have yet to experience any of the problems I read about, the anamorphic conversion is great, the letterbox edges are crisp and smooth the picture is wonderfull. The numerous jacks make it possible to get this up and running on any system but if you have the choice use the optical sound because it is amazing.
Rating: Summary: Good but not Best Review: I just purchased this product, this is my first DVD player aside from a PS2, i think that this is an awesome product but slightly over priced, i saw other good brands that offered simular features for a lower price. I pretty much just purchased this particlar model based on having the Sony name. The functionality is great and it hooks up and looks great, it is slightly noisy though, while reading disks. I would recomend this product but if you don't care about having the sony name there are other DVD players with the same features at a lower price. Overall, good player and i would purchase this again.
Rating: Summary: Excellent DVD Player for Use with HDTV Review: I purchased this DVD player from a local retailer in 2001 and I have been very impressed with the picture quality it displays on my 36" Wega HDTV. The video has absolutely no scan lines that I can see within a reasonable distance from the HDTV.The audio outputs allow you to have either optical (my preference) or coax digital out. The player also offers a switch on the back to choose either Progressive, Interlaced, or Auto select video signal. The remote is very easy to use and has all the functions you would need to operate even the most feature rich DVD. The remote will also allow you to operate any Sony television but notably lacks some important more complicated functions (just enough to force you to have your HDTV remote on the coffee table 'just in case'). All around great player and considering the price is currently less than half what I paid for it (but so is the HDTV--oh the price of cutting edge technology that becomes outdated in a year), it becomes economical as well. Oh, one last thing, it is also one of the few DVD Players that Sony made at the time offering MP3 playback (maybe Sony's softening up on their anti-MP3 stance) as well as VCD. Both of which I use on a regular basis. If you are looking for a multi-disk player I would recommend the Denon 5 disc carousel. I currently use that DVD player on my larger T.V. in the family room.

Rating: Summary: Suspect Reliability Review: I was looking for a decent DVD player to play my MP3's as well. It took me 3 players before I got to the this model. Too many players out there say 'MP3 compatible', but really don't handle all MP3's (skipping, loud popping, etc.). The Sony was the first one that handled ALL of my MP3's without a hitch. Like a previous reviewer already mentioned, it's pretty lame that Sony did not put in a Shuffle function for MP3 discs. They made it available for regular CD's, so what gives? Oh yeah, the DVD player itself works fine. There's a few settings that allow you to customize the sound in case you don't have a 5.1 receiver (like me). Picture and playback are no problem so far since I bought it back in December of '02. For you MP3 freaks (like me), here's some recommendations to help with playback and other stuff. These tools are FREE on the web. Use Google to look for them. CDEx - want to make your own MP3's from your CD collection? This FREE ripper has no restrictions, lots of personalized settings and has one of the best encoders (LAME) for MP3. You'll get great sounding MP3's from this tool. MP3Gain - Tired of loud, then quiet MP3's? This tool helps equalize the volume of selected tracks, saving you from volume knob twiddling. MP3Trim - This helps with trimming excess space at the end of tracks as well as cleaning up garbage bits in the MP3. Ever had one that couldn't play or started part way in the song? This tool will fix those problems. Afer I got MP3Trim, ALL MP3's played in my boombox and Sony DVD player. Only limit on this software is that the MP3 song limit is 7 minutes. MP3DirectCut - Allows you to split MP3's (especially those albums that are one long MP3), trim them and lots of other stuff. Once you have the above tools and figure them out, your MP3 exeperience will be smoother and much more enjoyable.

Rating: Summary: Feature Rich Review: I've been looking and looking and looking for a replacement for my old Panasonic DVD player. This is it. Not only does it play the new formats. It has 2 count them 2 sets audio outputs. This has been my biggest complaint when trying to find a DVD player. I've had a bad experience with my RCA carousel DVD player that had more than one set of audio outputs. The manufacturers seem to think that if you don't want a carousel you don't want to hook your DVD player into your stereo as well as your TV. There are times when you want theatre sound and there are times when you want regular TV. If you feel the same this is the DVD player for you
