Rating: Summary: Excellent bang for the buck! Review: I already have an ONKYO (a few years old and still playing better than any other DVD player I've seen) but purchased this one as a gift for a friend. It arrived DOA, was as light as a feather (not good for electronics), and reeked of junk. I went to a local store to see one that actually worked in action to see if I wanted a replacement or a refund. One of the demo disks the sales rep used wouldn't play, and the one that did unveiled horrible picture quality and jittering. My decision was made, I would request a refund. JVC used to produce quality items. In fact, I used to consider them the best among mid-grade electronics (sony, panasonic, technics, etc.). However, JVC has made the decision to produce some of their products in China, including this one, thus rendering any commitment to quality null and void. I was attracted to this unit based on the price and name (I should have went to the local store to see it before ordering: another lesson learned!). The supposed MSRP is $150 with a 'SALE' price of around $85. DON'T BE FOOLED! This unit is comparable to other units, such as APEX, which are made in China: lightweight materials, no quality, and inferior craftsmanship. If you want a cheap, made in China DVD player, opt for an Apex, which can be purchased at 1/2 the price of one of these. JVC can no longer be considered mid-grade. They have descended to low grade. If you're looking for a mid-grade unit, opt for a Panasonic or Sony and if you want enduring quality, spend the few extra dollars on an ONKYO or DENON.

Rating: Summary: Great player for most needs. Review: I bought this for mom, since I already have a JVC, and the remote is the same...So I could teach her how to use it. I am a broadcast engineer, have been working at tv stations for thirty years. I still don't understand why home consumer stuff is SOOO complicated to operate. Geeks are apparently dictating what we all have to deal with when it comes to operating these things....Have you EVER needed all the features of DVDs? I haven't... Anyway, this one works fine, and has a great feature...On a widescreen movie you can zoom in on the picture in steps and minimize or eliminate the black bars....My mom NEEDS this feature since she hates the black bars... The player plays. What else do you need to know?

Rating: Summary: Hopeful, but disappointed Review: I bought this player after reading the positive and negative reviews other customers posted about it. I hoped I'd get lucky and it would work out as well for me as it had for some others. However, the sound and video quality were lacking and I opted to return it to Amazon in exchange for a Zenith DVB-312 player (which was actually about $20 less). The sound on the menu screens with the Panasonic player included a persistent buzz that only diminished when you started the actual film or clips. Then the buzzing went in and out depending on what kind of sound effects the movie was using at the time. The video was often fine, but there were occassional streaks in the picture and a consistent bright green glare. I tried a couple different (store-bought) DVDs, but the problems persisted. I've had a fine experience with the Zenith player so far. Better luck to whoever else decides to give this one a try.
Rating: Summary: Great value Review: I bought this specifically so I could play DVDs, SVCDs, and JPEGs on my Infocus X1 lcd projector using the progressive mode with component inputs. Finding Nemo looked amazing! Relative to the Panasonic Player I have, control for playing JPEGs is superior, with on display directories of photos provided.

Rating: Summary: Terrible video glitches, streaking. Review: I bought this unit to replace my older Sony unit, which has trouble playing home-burned CDs and some home-burned DVDs. Furthermore, I thought that with progressive scan it would be a good match to the component inputs of my JVC 56" projection set. Immediately I noticed bad video artifacts on any fast action scenes...anything moving horizontally would have streaky lines trailing it. If you then "rewind" over the same section, it would play fine! I tried every possible combination of settings and switched from the component outputs to S-Video and even composite, but the streaking remained. The JVC is on it's way back to the store, and my Sony is back in place. Maybe I got a lemon, but I'll be looking at other brands.
Rating: Summary: Are you kidding...Just one STAR Review: I do not know what's wrong with the one star reviewers. I find this player excellent. Plays everything you throw at it. It even plays VCD those were not playable by my previous Philips DVD player. Strengths : Plays all formats. Progressive Scan. Slim design. Elegent looks. Price. Weekness : None except no 'random' mode for MP3 and no 'rotate' mode for JPEG. No big deal though. Recommendation : Highly recommended
Rating: Summary: Excellent Player with Few Flaws Review: I got this player new for around $100. It matches my Sony receiver just right and is awesome for music CDs and DVDs. I also read that it was the top-rated Consumer Reports DVD player. The picture and sound quality so far have been superb with it hooked up through component. However, I have seen the stuttering problem occur on this player in panning scenes, but it only happens if I start pause the movie a lot. I can play movies from start to finish and pause a couple of times and never see it stutter. Another thing is that I have never seen the 4:3 PS mode work to stretch a widescreen movie to fit the whole screen. Isn't that what it's supposed to do on some DVDs (if any)? It does read all kinds of discs and supports Pro Scan too. I really like how any disc will begin to play after only 2-3 seconds on this player. Coax and Optical audio outs are also a definite plus. I recommend this as an excellent DVD/CD player.
