Summary: The almost perfect DVD player!
Review: I honestly do not understand these people who say the unit is bad. Either they just have had the badluck of getting a defective unit or some are just doing something wrong. Its a fantastic unit ESPECIALLY if you have some DVDs that are in PAL Format or are in another Region. It actually has an NTSC to PAL converter and the other way around as well! Nice crisp clear picture and sound! Another explaination about the poor picture is mainly because some DVDs are coded badly OR you have an HD TV in which you clearly see the pixels from DVDs. This is why there is a new type of DVD which is to be released either in 2005 or 2006. This is another reason why I say "almost perfect" because once you start buying the new format, you need to buy a new player which can read that type of format. The image converter can be easily accessed and the region changer? Just open the tray with no DVD on it, press 9999 and the region number you wish to select using the remote. You can try the ZERO Region but I have heard from someone that once you use this option the DVD player locks up. I am not sure wether this is some sort of security lock but it is just best to do the changing. It only takes 2-5 seconds to do the changing anyways! Kudos to Philips for making such an incredible DVD player yet.

Summary: Might Not Be The Best
Review: This player scored five stars for everything it is and does for the price. Recently I discovered a problem. The S-Video out records as a letterbox picture on my DVD recorder. It is therefore unusable, and I have to use the composite video out for full-screen recording. Everything else is great. This is a good player to buy because it reads DVD-R's and everything that even my $400 Philips DVD recorder can't read. But it may not be the best DVD player on the market due to the problem mentioned above. I could either take a chance buying this model again or buy another similar model such as the DVD726. I love Philips products. You will not hear many people say that in these reviews.

Summary: Looks good, low price, *fast* shipping, & It really works!
Review: It works! I got the cart before the horse, & had several UK PAL Reg. 2 DVD's delivered, with no DVD player to my name. I'd decided on a Philips DVD727, but they had disappeared from the only local source(Target) *and* from Amazon. :^P
The Philips DVD 727 finally appeared on Amazon again for a few days, US$70 delivered. Placed the order, it arrived days(4/8 instead of 4/13- kudos to Amazon) before the original delivery estimate. Finally hooked it up today, applied the "hack", put in Britcom disc,AND: got rolling picture. :^P Oh, yeah, I remembered. Went to System Menu, set TV output to NTSC. Bingo, all is well! 8^D For my purposes, these old UK programs that were originally stored on tape, the picture & sound is perfect. True DVD-o-philes may disagree, but I'm very happy with the player. It does exactly what I wanted it to do- plays the UK version of the Britcom DVD's('Allo 'Allo- my favorite), & I'm sure it'll play good ole NTSC Reg.1 discs just fine- as well as JPEG discs for Grandma! If you can't find one locally, check Amazon every few days- they get 'em but seem to sell out fast. Don't be fooled by I-net sellers selling "multi-region" DVD players with *claimed* hardware modifications. I almost went for that, but did a little more research before spending *lots* more $$. Want to play overseas DVD's? Get a Philips DVD727. Bang for the buck, ya can't beat it with a stick. You need one of these! I'll post an update in a few months.

Summary: Unbeatable for the $69 price
Review: Was lucky to get the player at $69 while it lasted. It has since sold out for that price. Very impressed with the "picture - jogging" features -- forwards and backwards up to 1/32. Clean body, sleek design. It is a bit wide for my taste, but still very slim, making it portable.

Summary: Awesome DVD player!
Review: Not only is the sound & picture superior, but it's also sooo easy to use. Even the instruction manual is read-able and written in common sense language so that you don't have to be an engineer to understand the instructions. Most importantly for us; it's a breeze to switch between Regions; no problems AT ALL! I highly recommend the Philips DVD 727.

Summary: Excellent Slow Motion functions
Review: I use a DVD player primarily for analyzing sports in slow motion. This player, Philips DVD727, has excellent slow-motion features - 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/16 speed, both forward and reverse. I'm very pleased with it. (Far superior to other brands I tried.)

Review: I purchased this DVD player because my other players can't handle DVD-R,etc. This one does,and it works well.It is sleek,incredibly lightweight,and looks good with my other silver components.I hooked it up and had it playing one of my home-made DVD's in minutes.All in all..I'm very pleased,and the price was right,as well.

Review: I ordered the Philips NTSC/PAL converter DVD player and it arrived as promised and on time, it was new, worked fine w/both US and European DVD's. No settings, just plug it in. Overall very smooth transaction. I would buy from this verndor again.

Review: Ok, here is the deal. I purchased this player and the 1st one came with NO power to the unit. the replacement has incredibly poor picture quality especially within the black. Read thru all of these reviews and notice how many review specifically mention poor quality. Think twice before purchasing this unit!

Summary: Phillips doesn't stand by their products
Review: I purchased a Phillips DVD/VCR combo in August 2003. After just four months of use, I began having problems with the VCR. I was told by one person at their call center that the errors were because the unit wasn't used frequently enough. After a second call, I was told this was probably a defect in the unit, but only offered the option of mailing the unit back to them, paying shipping and handling and paying half price on a new unit. I declined. Then in March, the DVD player broke. I took it into an independent repair shop, who said that that there was a defect with the DVD reader and Phillips won't sell them parts for new units. So the only option is to pay more than $80 for another Phillips product. I think this is a scam. Why would I pay for another product from a company who sells equipment that works for less than six months! I will never touch another Phillips product with a ten-foot pole. I should have paid the extra money and bought a Sony in the first place. Check Comsumer Reports and you will see that Phillips T.V. and other electronics are not very highly rated.
