Summary: Great sound!
Review: Bought this weekend. Extremely easy to set up. Speakers are small (which is what caught my eye at the store) and have excellent sound! I love the fact that it holds can hold up to 5 discs.

Summary: No frills!Great sound!
Review: Consumer Reports nailed it with their review. No frills, Great sound quality. I wish people would do some research about bigger ticket items before they buy. They then wouldn't expect $1500 system features and performance from a $250 system. $250!!! If you're like me, you want basics, and you want the best sound. I play a cd I like begining to end, don't NEED random(also,I don't play scratched disks and expect non-scratched results). I LOVE movies, This is great theater sound on the cheap! If you are a huge "features" nut, buy something else. But this is as cheap as great sound gets.

Summary: Great - only missing a zoom feature
Review: Great picture and sound - my only complaint is that it doesnt have a zoom feature. This is something you'll need for older dvd's that are widescreen but not formatted for playback on a widescreen tv (has black bars on the top and bottom to make the widescreen output 4:3); for example, the original Pulp Fiction dvd release (1998). My widescreen tv has a zoom, but I have to turn off progressive scan to use it. It would be better if the dvd player provided the zoom so i could still use progressive scan.

Summary: Disappointed and a little frustrated with the return policy!
Review: I bought this system in early September and was initially happy with it. It seemed like a bargain for the price and while the sound wasn't anything to write home about, it was decent, with good bass response from the subwoofer. I've also owned Sony products before and have been pleased with their quality and reliability. Unfortunately after a few weeks some irregularities came to light with this system. For one, on audio CDs with more than 15 -18 tracks, the last few tracks tend to skip or get stuck on a particular note. I checked the same CDs on my other player and they worked just fine. In addition, twice so far, while playing a DVD, the screen has jumped, jerked and frozen at a particular point and I could not remedy the situation with the remote. I tried to return the system to Amazon but found that I was just above the 30-day limit on returns so now have the hassle/cost of packing and mailing this to Sony to get a replacement. Quite frankly, if I had a choice, I'd invest a little more and buy a better system. I will also think twice about buying large electronic goods online but will opt for buying such items from shops near my place so that in the rare case I may need to return them, it will not be as frustrating and expensive.

Summary: High quality and versatile
Review: I bought this system to replace a Sanyo DVD player and self-designed audio system. I needed a system that played DVD+Rs and very few did. So, I settled on this system. I was pleasantly surprised. Sounds is crisp and clear, with good volume and depth. I do wish the sub was powered. The only other drawback for me is that it doesn't play DVD-Audio discs. It does what I need with pretty good quality.

Summary: Great System, Great Price
Review: I don't know what the first guy was thinking when he wrote this, but I will tell you that you should always believe the phrase.. You get what you pay for.. I am a BIG movie buff. I collect movies for a livimg, and spend a lot of time at home with a theatre system set up. My first system I built myself and it wasn't top of the line by any means, but it was decent enough to put out some decent sound. Finally my speakers gave, and a particular woman in my life decided to replace them and take the system for herself. This is the system I bought to replace it, and I couldn't be happier. It puts out massive amounts of sound, easy to set up, nice progressive scan capabilities, and the sub does enough thumping for anyone living in a house or apartment! Its 650 Watts rattles my windows at low volumes, and provides true 5.1 surround sound for what it is. If you nit pick of each speaker and need to fine tune everything, Id get a different system. but if you're just setting something up to get a nice decent sound, and something that rocks hard when you bump it up, this is the system, and a great price for it too. P.S. make sure you get the speaker stands that mount to the BACK of the speaker, not the bottom, as the sony speakers are flat on the bottom, but there is a screw hole in the back for mounting..

Summary: Not Bad, not the Best
Review: I installed one of these last night. The controls are terrible for adjusting volume for each channel. Totally confusing and stupid. Buy extra cable, or splice together like I had to do with extra length left over from the front speaker. I bought this without demoing it based on the word of the CC sales chick that it was a good system, comparable to one that was at the store, but out of stock.

Bottom line - do not buy one of these without fully trying it out. Ask the sales person to show you how the controls work for controlling each speaker. This thing is absolutely horrible in that dept.

Also, no bass adjustment. Only presets for various sound - Jazz, Rock, news, sports etc. Something found on cheap boom boxes.

I don't know what the 5 stars are next to this thing with no reviews.

I would not reccomend this to a friend, but its too late for me as I'm sorta stuck with it because I installed the thing before trying it out.

Go to the store and demo. Don't buy something as important as this without trying it out.

I love Sony products, but this system is somewhat sucky.

Summary: No Surround Sound when using tuner???!!
Review: I just bought this on 10/19, set it up, and put it through its paces. I'll agree with the other reviews on the difficulty navigating the menus to adjust the volume on each speaker. Now, I've determined that I can't "fill the room with sound" while using the FM tuner. No surround option when listening to the FM tuner? I can only get the front two channels and SW to play while listening to FM. I listen to the radio quite a bit and the AIWA system that this replaced (had problems playing CDs) was a lot more flexible. It had multiple settings for using all speakers (Hall, Live, etc) that allowed me to fill my TV room with sound regardless of the input source. Now I see that that there is only one Audio input. I'd like to connect my TV out and my VCR out to this unit. This might by the straw that breaks my back.

I like the sound it produces, however, I want that sound all the time, like when I listen to the radio. I also don't want to invest in an A/B switch so that I can connect a VCR and my TV out to the thing. Wouldn't you think a "Home Theater" unit would have more than one audio input?

I only paid $249 for the thing ($299-$50 coupon) and I'm sure I can't get this sound with more inputs at a better price.

One last annoyance, I want to call Sony to understand how to adjust the speaker balance. The only contact number is on a blue slip provided for registering the product. Turns out that the toll-free customer support number is misprinted. I think this is a bad omen.

Summary: Great price great sound!
Review: I was a little iffy about buying this system without hearing it first but I decided to go with it over the Sony 450 watt system for a little cheaper. I am very pleased with the sound quality it puts out. If you want great sound but don't wanna spend the extra $$ go with this system. I picked it up at circuit City for $250 and couldn't be happier.

Summary: Great System. Highly recommend.
Review: Just got this system set up last week and I couldn't be happier. I'm a huge movie buff and the surround sound on this system is geat. Also the 5 disc DVD changer is really convenient. I would have to say that this is really one of the best systems on the market for the price.
