Summary: THIS IS ONE GROOVY MOVIE, BABY!
Review: Boom baby; Disney's gone FUNKY! The Emperor's New Groove is a hilarious laugh riot ALL THE WAY THROUGH! In my opinion, this is absolutely the FUNNIEST animated feature ever cranked out of the Disney Movie Machine - even funnier than Aladdin! And although a lot of the humor in this comedy is geared for older kids and adults, my six year old is CRAZY about this latest addition to her Disney collection, having already watched it at least six times!SO, WHAT HAPPENS IN THIS MOVIE: Well,there's this totally obnoxious emperor who goes by the name of Kuzco (voiced by David Spade). He cares not a wit about other's feelings, and expects to have whatever he wants, no matter who he has to step on to get it. In his typically obnoxious way, he fires his long-time assistant Yzma (voiced by Earth Kitt) because she has TOO MANY WRINKLES! Now Yzma, intend on revenge, tries to poison Kuzco with the aide of her big dufus of a henchman, Kronk (the funniest character of all)! However, she mistakes Essence of Llama for poison, and turns the rude and overbearing Kuzco into a......well, you can guess what! Now the rude and overbearing Llama (Kuzco)! meets up with Pacha, a pleasant peasant who Kuzco was going to take advantage of by throwing his family out of their home in order to build KUZCOTOPIA - a vacation paradise! Despite their differences, though, Pacha and Kuzco must band together to get back to the castle, having many groovy adventures along the way. In the end, Kuzco learns a very important lesson about kindness. (But of course; it's DISNEY, after all)! WHAT'S MY FINAL WORD ON THE EMPEROR'S NEW GROOVE? It's great; it's groovy; it's funky and funny and clever. Often times the movie even pokes fun of itself; in Mel Brooks sort of style. David Spade is just PERFECT doing the obnoxious voice of Kuzco (well, he did always seem so obnoxious, himself, on Saterday Night Live)! Younger children, in the under five age group, may not be thrilled with this movie which is definitely more CLEVER than CUTE. But for adults and "older" kids, The Emperor's New Groove gets TWO THUMBS UP! Trust me, you will laugh at this one; no joke!

Summary: The Next Disney Classic but you call this bonus?
Review: The special 2 disc version does not have as much as I hoped for. The movie is great and breaks all the rules in animation. The DVD does have an interesting commentary and is quite informative. The extra scenes don't show a whole lot. There is a Sting video, but if I remember right the video and commentary are available on the regular version. That may be the better way to go. There is a game on there that might be challenging to someone that does not know how to work a remote control. The bonus on Toy Story 1,2 and Bug's life special edition gave so much more. The bonus may be a disappointment but the movie is a laugh riot! Every one will love it!

Summary: Tip my hat off to Disney
Review: Thankfully, I can say I really enjoyed this movie. The plot was well done and thought out beautifully. The art and design of everything was done very well, not to mention the colors and the way they stood out so marvelously. When I first debated whether to purchase this dvd or not, I thought of this movie to being too short. However when you are drawn into the movie, you forget the time and the time seems to pass as you are sitting through a normal 2 hour movie. In other words, it doesn't seem too long and it doesn't seem to short. This movie was definitely a fast paced movie and kept me laughing and chucking throughout the whole entire movie. First time viewing it, the laughs were definitely there and at mass quantities. After viewing it the first time, I noticed myself pondering all the hilarious parts and urging to see it once more. After popping this movie in once again, I found myself laughing more and harder than I did the first time. The supplemental DVD is outstanding. All the extras on that extra disk added to the reason why you shouldn't hesitate on getting this DVD. As I am not a big fan of Sting, I wished there was more than just a lot of commentary while his music video was going and more of the actual music being presented. Deleted scenes were a nice bonus. It is also apparent as to why they didn't release those couple of scenes. They just didn't fit. Definitely a solid purchase and I don't think you would be disappointed if you bought this DVD. I recommend this as a definite purchase to those even considering this DVD.

Summary: Good, but not great
Review: I have to wonder; were the other reviewers watching the same movie I was? Don't get me wrong, I love Disney animated movies. Most of them are full of fun and mischeif and tell a compelling story. A very few fall way short of the mark. I beleive this is one of those few. There are several aspects of this film that seem to be missing something and it's hard to define what that something is. The animation is good, but not up to previous standarts. In fact is seems to be just in between a usual Disney feature and one of their "direct to video" efforts. The story is very basic and tends to go nowhere. Only one character shows any kind of development and it's almost like you miss the transition from selfish to caring. The songs...well, besides the "theme song guy", there were none. I mean, let's face it, most of us expect a musical when it comes to Disney animated fare. The humor was good at times, but not nearly as funny as the other reviewers indicated. People tend to see the fast paced humor as relative to Aladin, but I beg to differ. The humor was very different. In Aladin, the Genie was not confined to the "time" of the story. He had been all over time and space with his powers and thus the modern references worked. Anything out of place with that doesn't. Aztecs with lab coats and rubber gloves? Just doesn't quite work.

Summary: Great Movie for the Young AND Old.
Review: I was a bit optimistic about seeing this movie, I'm not a big cartoon fan, nor anything else that is animated, but this movie was full of laughs. It was originally intended for my nephew to watch, but I enjoyed it as well! The movie is hilarious, David Spade is perfect for the voice of Kuzco, and the soundtrack is excellent. A great movie for toddlers and grandparents alike!

Summary: Great Movie - Awful DVD
Review: Beware of this DVD -- it does not play in all DVD players. I am unable to watch it on my player, so I called the Disney DVD technical support line and they told me it was a problem with my player. Every other DVD I own plays fine on my player so I tend to believe it has more to do with the disc itself. I returned my first DVD and got another one and it skips in the same places as the first one and renders the disc unwatchable. I called the consumer line for my player and they said that it was definitely the DVD itself and that some companies (most notably Disney) are not making their DVD's to play in all standard players. In my opinion, this is a great movie but now I am stuck with a DVD that I will not be able to watch until I buy a new player. Disney really needs to get a clue because their lack of knowledge in the DVD arena is making them look like amateurs. I own a few other Disney DVD's and their lack of extras along with poor audio and video quality really speaks volumes about them. They obviously are not concerned about customers who have been waiting to get these movies on DVD. I will stay away from all Disney DVD's in the future.

Summary: A full-length cartoon
Review: There is a moment in THE EMPEROR'S NEW GROOVE that illustrates the point I wish to make about the film. The Emperor has been turned into a llama and is lost in the jungle. He gave a squirrel who tried to help him a hard time and is now stuck in a nest of sleeping jaguars. The squirrel blows up a balloon and pops it. The jaguars don't wake up, but wake up from a lighter sound the Emperor makes. If you have seen cartoons like Bugs Bunny and Tom & Jerry (which used the above mentioned gag a number of times) you will recognize it. The whole scene is right out of those old cartoon shorts. And cartoon is the best way to describe THE EMPEROR'S NEW GROOVE. Even the animation itself is straight out of a cartoon. It's 2-dimensional and not what you would expect from Disney. That's not a bad thing. I'm a huge fan of the old cartoons, especially the MGM cartoons that Tex Avery directed. They were fast paced, full of energy, and had one laugh after another. The director Mark Dindal and the animators of THE EMPEROR'S NEW GROOVE do the same thing. In addition to the balloon gag, they use classic cartoon gags like the avaitor-hit-by-lightning, the waterfall, and one that I haven't seen in years: The Angel/Devil inner voices. The voices were well chosen for each character. I believe that sooner or later every celebrity actor ends up doing an animated character's voice. David Spade, who practically made his whole career playing annoying jerks, finds the right note as the emperor. John Goodman's Pacha reminds me of his character on ROSEANNE, a kind and loveable big lug. Eartha Kitt and Patrick Warburton are hilarious as the villain Yzma and her sidekick, Kronk. Kitt hasn't had a jucier role since she did Catwoman on the old BATMAN TV series. I learned that the film started out as another serious animated musical for Disney but something went wrong. The filmmakers threw out the original animation and started all over again. Perhaps they found out it wouldn't work as a serious film. Also, I knew that Sting was supposed to do a lot more songs than what ended up. I have no idea how it would have turned up, but the final result is an entertaining, gag-filled movie. This Special Edition DVD has an excellent picture and sound quality. It also continues a new standard for Disney of transferring the image from the digital source instead of the film negative. (It was first done with A BUG'S LIFE, and later with TARZAN and TOY STORY 2.) Disney also seems committed to providing DTS digital sound on it's new DVD releases. A smart move, since DTS is superior in dynamic range and bass effect to Dolby Digital 5.1 The disk also contains three behind the scenes featurettes, a look at the making of Sting's "My Funny Friend & Me" song, interactive games, and a commentary by the director and his crew. The commentary is interesting at the end of the picture. The director discusses a dilemma he faced with ending the movie.
