Summary: Ambiguity aside, not bad
Review: I only saw PoE for the first time on video. Like many others, I was most impressed with the art direction and the visual style. The characters are a little stiff sometimes...perhaps because the Dreamworks animators were striving for so much dramatic subtlety. This movie has more pregnant pauses than any other animated feature to date, which is a very good thing. Animation does not have to constantly move to justify its presence. Contemplative silence is a mainstay of japanese anime, after all. I am still a little unsure of whether Dreamworks are really certain of what they are trying to break away from in terms of comparison to Disney. They certainly don't seem to show much originality by poaching artistic staff, oscar-winning composers and voice actors (not to mention story ideas like Antz and possibly 'Road to ElDorado' vs Disney's future 'Kingdom of the Sun') with their VERY fat checkbooks. PoE is no less a musical than Beauty and the Beast....indeed, like some others here, I was disappointed in the songs...'If you Believe' should NOT have gotten that Oscar. Stephen Schwartz should stick to lyrics. Hans Zimmer's score was outstanding though...and I have to say I *love* the opening 'Deliver Us/Last Lullaby' sequence. It was an excellent, sensitive adaptation of the biblical story. As a movie in and of itself, a very good picture. Highly recommended.

Summary: Great film, but DVD came up a bit short
Review: I first saw this movie when I purchased it on video. Loved the animation, the characters are done in such an unusual style it's quite a refreshing change from Disney fair. And the computer graphics were really used to enhance the movie instead of overwhelm it.

I have been a bit disappointed in musical scores from some of the recent Disney films, but really enjoyed this films musical score, you will get hooked right from the opening sequence.

All the extra features on the DVD really made this a must buy again. Lots of behind the scenes info, art gallery, you even get to hear the signature song "You Will Believe" sung in a medley of around 25 different languages!

Of course the picture and sound are great on the dvd, my only small grips are first, being new to DVD I thought when a movie is show in Anamorphic format, not JUST letterbox, that meant it was presented more in the cinema scope style, but with this film that's not the case. The picture still filled up most of my screen and didn't have that appearance, I see now that there are greatly varying degrees of widescreen. Not a big detraction, but I know the film wasn't presented that way in theaters, so I always feel like I'm still missing a bit of the picture. Also, after you play one of the special feature segments, instead of returning to the menu the dvd starts at the beginning and tries to play the movie, so you have to stop it and go back to the menu yourself. A bit of an annoyance when you wanted to go directly onto another special feature.

Still it's a great movie to watch and even better to see on DVD!

Summary: Take note Disney!
Review: This is probably the best non-Disney animated movie I have ever seen (okay, maybe equal with An American Tail), and it beats most of those. Fair enough, you almost can't go wrong with such a well known story and charachters (although those who have seen the awful Magic Sword: Quest for Camelot may disagree), but the way it is adapted into such an accessible form is such that even us athiests must enjoy it. It also has a rousing score which is also important for this kind of movie and is part of why Disney films of late have been so average.

This is also, thankfully, one of the best DVDs yet released for any movie, packed with extras, the highlight being the multi-language presentation of 'When you Believe'. We can only hope that Disney and others follow this example... could this indeed have led to the Special Edition releases of A Bugs Life and Tarzan?

In short, this disc is a MUST whether or not you have kids.

Summary: Unusual but well done
Review: In many ways, the Prince of Egypt is an atypical animated musical. It's longer than the average animated musical (almost two hours), it emphasizes the dramatic content of the story with little room for comic relief, and (very atypically) sticks to the original story! A few points are sheer imagination, but the Biblical story is all there. Harsh parts of the story are not explained away or avoided. Moses kills a man and must face the reality of his crime (mind you, it doesn't take him very long to get over it, but the thought's still there.) The God that liberates also kills. Moses' discovery of his past is the most appealing part of the movie, told in part through the stylized Egyptian art instead of "live action" animation. For the most part, the viewer feels a genuine connection to Moses as a real, live, human being. Occasionally the connection is lost, and it seems that Moses is only "reading lines." The concern for Moses the man is the strongest part of The Prince of Egypt. I find it refreshing that the focus of the movie is the relationship between siblings, and not the love interest. Although Aaron receives little time in the limelight, Moses' sister Miriam becomes his surrogate mother and inspiration. And for once, the Pharoah is treated as an actual human being instead of an evil villain! As a whole, the music compliments the emotional and artistic intent of the movie perfectly. You won't find yourself whistling these tunes, but when put in context, they send a powerful message. The images in the movie are beautiful. Watch this movie for the parting of the Red Sea, if nothing else. The movie is a bit long, and the high priests (meant as comic relief) are more annoying than funny. Still, the potentially sensitive subject is treated with great care. Well done.

Summary: SOngs, songs and more songs...
Review: Even with the stellar cating providing voices for the characters (reaching almost perfection) this film fails, because probably Katzenberger wanted to beat Disney in their own terrain. So, what he did? Filled the movie with songs and forgot about the history. The result is a boring film (with high technical quality, of course).

Summary: A Family Movie with Christian Morals - at long last!
Review: Finally, Hollywood has taken a glimpse at the light and produced a very good (if not entirely accurate) account of one of the most powerful stories of mankind - Moses leading his people to a Promised Land by (and the movie reveals it) God. The artists did an excellent job, especially in portraying the scenes most difficult to imagine - the burning bush, the Angel of Death and the parting of the waters of the Red Sea (well, actually it was the Sea of Reeds, but who cares?). I thought it was an exceptional movie with one of the most powerful soundtracks ever "When you Believe", rivalling even the moving Star Wars theme! On the whole a must-see movie and, finally, one with morals. A huge thank you to the people who made this movie...

Summary: Enjoyable, quality disc.
Review: I thought this was an excellent portrayal of the Biblical story of Moses. It's been done before, but I appreciated the love that was portrayed between Moses and Pharoah in this version. Their relationship was not portrayed as a contentious one, but rather, two brothers who are now worlds apart. I felt it was touching to see how Moses wept at the loss of Pharoah's son and the other children of Egypt. You could really feel Pharoah's heart break over his loss and his failure to understand the stumbling block his own pride had become. Even with his rage at the end, you still had the sense that he still loved Moses and was desperate to understand--why? The disc itself is of very good quality. The audio and animation are just superb. The transfer itself appears to be free from any dust, scratches or grain. I take away one star only because the picture appears to be a little on the dark side. It's a relatively minor flaw, but it's the only one I could find as far as quality goes. The Widesreen Review Amazon has listed above acknowledges this as well and still gives the video quality 5 stars, so maybe it's just me and this is simply the way it is, rather than an atual flaw. You be the judge. It's still a good picture and should not spoil your entertainment.

Summary: Best Animated Movie in Ages
Review: When seeing "The Prince of Egypt" for the first time, I was brought to tears, a sensation I had not experienced for some time while watching one of Hollywood's latest blockbusters. The story of Moses and his exodus was brought to life through this tale of love and miracles, and I have never been so moved by an animated film. I was impressed by the subtle blending of both the Christian and Jewish faiths and touched by the portrayal of these biblical heros as real feeling people. The soundtrack is both moving and exciting to listen to, while reflecting actual Hebrew musical styles and textures. The animation was incredible and I was in awe of the gorgeous landscapes, plague interpretations and river scenes. This movie was a stunning masterpiece and I commend Dreamworks for their acheivement. My only complaint is that this movie didn't receive an Academy Award Nomiation for best picture.

Summary: BETTER EACH TIME I SEE IT
Review: I have watched 'The Prince Of Egypt' video about 3 times. Each time the content and message gain depth. It is a captivating way to communicate 'highlights' of Moses' extradonary life as he follows his heart and the voice of God. I encourage you to read the Exodus account in an easy to understand translation. Then watch 'The Prince of Egypt' again and see the wonder.
