Summary: There couldn't be a better Disney movie to own on DVD.
Review: For me, the Fox and the Hound cannot be matched by any other Disney film. Unlike the stiffer, older films and the newer, hokier ones, the atmosphere in TFATH is just perfect, truly a revolutionary point in Disney's timeline. The animation is very fluid and the characters have great design and movement. Most of the songs are more like talking than singing, but they're few and far between and manage to get the point across. A nice change from usual Disney fare in the surprisingly sad ending. Considering I'm pretty desensitized to on-screen emotion, it's unusual that I cry every time I watch this one. It's the ONLY Disney movie that can make me. Even so, there's a number of comedic moments to get rid of the tension. I'm not sure where the Amazon review got the idea that the characters lack depth. Believe me, by the time this one is over, you'll be wanting to see much more of all of them. It's an excellent feature that carries an important message all wrapped up inside a lovable, heartwarming, and poignant story. You owe it to yourself and your children to see this one.

Summary: AN ANIMATED FILM THAT EXPLORES THE MEANING OF FRIENDSHIP
Review: We rented this video for our five year old daughter. Well, she ended up LOVING it so much, that now we are going to buy the movie when it comes out on DVD! This is a story that revolves around two "arch rivals;" a fox and a hound, who meet when they are a mere kit and a pup. They then go on to develop a special friendship that is put to the test when reality intrudes. There is one part of the movie that is so emotional that it moved both my daughter and I to tears! But fear not: the movie DOES have a HAPPY DISNEY-LIKE ENDING! This story involves a lot of action, along with many adorable, codgy, and amusing characters. In addition, the animation is beautiful; reminiscent of Bambie. But most of all, The Fox and the Hound explores the true meaning of friendship against adversity - something we all can relate to! In my opinion, this movie should be a part of every Disney collection!

Review: The fox and the hound is an amazing movie with all of the loving characters like Tod the fox, Copper the hound dog, Cheif the older hound dog, Big mama the owl, and widow tweed. This story has great life-long lessons on friendship that you will never forget. Great for people young and old. Your kids will absoloutly love it. BUY IT NOW! IT WILL NOT BE LONG BEFORE TIME RUNS COMPLETLY OUT!!!!!

Summary: The older Disney's farewell film of friendship
Review: "Old Disney"'s last masterpiece shows the very meaning of friendship as Tod (the fox) and Coper (the hound) become friends though born natural enemies. A very touching story indeed...the grand fanale! The lovely tale begins when a lonely widow adopts an orphaned fox cub who she names Tod. The mischievous fox soon meets up with Copper, an adorable hound puppy. As the innocent pair grow up together in the forest, they become inseparable friends. While disobeying their families' wishes, they create a very powerful bond during the course of the film, and you get to know them well. The reviewer for Amazon was wrong this time--this is one of those timeless ones. While it isn't "Snow White" or "Fantasia", "The Fox and the Hound" is a touching movie, and children can learn a lot about friendship and bonding from it while still being entertained. However, be prewarned about the fanale scene, in which Tod and Coper reunite to face an almighty bear. This scene is very intense, and the youngest children may be frightened by it. "New Disney's first real scenes of pure intensity are scattered throughout the 1994 blockbuster "The Lion King". If you saw that film, you know what I mean. And if you see this film--let it be savored. It is the last of those old Disney films that you can guarentee are long-lasting classics. (HIGHLY RECCOMENDED!)

Summary: Emotional, touching but underrated.
Review: Of all of Disney's animated classics, The Fox and the Hound is my second-to-favorite Disney movie, since the first is "The Rescuers" and third "The Black Cauldron". This has to be the best cartoon drama Disney has ever made. The story is slow-moving, and a bit scary, (but for it to be a good movie there had to be some scary touches, even if they are frightening) it tells the story of a fox and a hound becoming great friends, but growing up will lead them in different paths, knowing that she can't keep the fox in her house any longer, Widow Tweed will leave Tod alone in the forest. This is where the true drama comes during the sequence of "Goodbye May Seem Forever". Can you belive it? Some people say Widow Tweed is the villain of the story, when all she did was suffer to save her "pet's" life. Heart warming, touching and filled with excitement, The Fox and the Hound is a charming classic that must not be missing from your collection.

Summary: Has been my favorite Disney film since I was 5
Review: This is one of the REAL Disney movies, people; to those who are reviewing it in bad taste, yes, it is not the happy-go-lucky fuzzy friendship average Disney film. It pushes real values and a sense of the real world. I have been watching this film since I was 5 and it never warped any of my values about my caution for guns or perspective on certain situations, etc. This was a good Disney movie in the sense that it didn't end the way everyone expects Disney movies to end. It wasn't predictable, but it was a touching film. It's a Disney classic and my favorite, and for those of you who think it's unsuitable for your children, look into it first before spending your 30 dollars.

Summary: Loss of Innocence
Review: Disney studio's 1981 production of THE FOX AND THE HOUND seems to have been made mostly by the newer generation of artists at the studio. The film's look is similar to 1977's THE RESCUERS. Dismissing the high strung and flamboyant personality traits possessed by the likes of Bernard and Miss Bianca from the previous film, THE FOX AND THE HOUND concentrates on the more homespun qualities that were created for the bayou characters. This folksy and laid-back approach bolstered by Pearl Bailey's songs sung as Big Mama Owl and Buddy Baker's unpretentious score at once sets THE FOX AND THE HOUND apart from previous Disney animated films. In fact this film has a very un-Disney look about it. The film leisurely unfolds a story about an orphaned fox named Tod adopted by Widow Tweed, a farming woman. Tod befriends a puppy named Copper owned by Widow Tweed's neighbor, the hunter Amos Slade, and they become friends. The fox and the hound make a pact of lifelong friendship. Inevitably after Copper is trained to be a hunting dog and they both grow up the two must confront each other. One is the hunter and one is the hunted as is ordained by nature. The film does not create genuinely frightful images thanks in part to the loosely drawn animation and its good-natured tone, yet its message is perhaps stronger than any Disney animated film. Things are much simpler when you are young. Once you grow up things appear in a much different light depending to what degree you were taught. The film uses the allegory of the fox and the hound, natural enemies in real life, and their pact of friendship to demonstrate the adversities of life's realities and the effects it has on each of us. This film seems deliberately aimed at very young viewers, yet its message spans the range of anyone old or young enough to comprehend it. I'll admit that this was never one of my favorite Disney films. Even my daughter did not like it. It is not showy or flashy. Even the animation is very simplistic. After watching it again recently I now see that I missed the film's payoff. As film viewers, the older we get the more sophisticated we become. Sophistication breeds complacency sometimes to the point where we miss the point! What looks like a cute little movie with fury animals on the surface to an adult, may be an emotionally awaking experience for a little child, a glimpse of what lies ahead. I think the filmmakers gave our young ones more credit for deductive feeling and emotion than we did. As an adult I found watching the first two thirds of this film a rather laborious task. The final third is where it comes alive and also comes full circle. For a very young child however, the entire film is very entertaining. For the very young child the lesson learned is a bonus. The payoff for me is the final scene where Copper begins to fall off to sleep and we hear an echoing voice of his pact of lifelong friendship to Tod that was made when they were children. It was very reminiscent of the final scene in THE YEARLING and I felt a tear run down my cheek. Sometimes the only tangible thing we have left of a happier time is our ability to revisit that time in our dreams. This is an important film.

Summary: Disney is the master of storytelling.
Review: This is definitely not one of the best drawn Disney films. It looks more like a Saturday morning cartoon. In this movie though, Disney shows it is the master of storytelling through animation. In Disney tradition, a parentless character slowly finds a friend, warmth and security. It will evoke Bambi and Lion King but with a different twist. Disney asks the characters, "Which is more important? Nature or nurture? Can you leave your essential nature or can your essential nature be loved out of you?" While the fox remains loyal to the hound, the hound develops new loyalty to his owner and mentor. Their early friendship is tested when they are placed in a situation outside of the one they always knew. I have to say I loved the song that the widow sang when she had to release the fox. I would love to play it for my daughter when she graduates from high school. The song is about how no matter how much you love someone, you have to allow them to be what they are going to be. These days, we lack truly family films. I go to the video store and find very few films appropriate to show the kids, yet not too sappy or simple to enjoy as adults. This film pleased me, my husband, 3 year daughter and 12 year old son. I strongly recommend it.

Summary: A Wholesome Disney Film, that is very Heartwarming.
Review: One of the saddest Disney films ever made, this is unlike any animated film in the Disney cannon. It has parallels with dealing with issues like racism and selfless friendship. The movie may not be the most iconic and heard of, but it is a definate must for anybody who loves Disney films. It brings back famous Disney talents. The movie is beautifully drawn and the music is very good too. A must see for a lover of the genre.

Summary: Disney's 24th Animated Masterpiece!
Review: Disney's previous animated hit, The Rescuers, set the stage for what became a new era in Disney animation. The Fox and the Hound was created, mostly, by a new staff of Disney animators, also The Fox and the Hound marked the end of what some call the sketchy period.
The Fox and the Hound is the timeless story of a fox, Todd, and a hunting dog named Copper that become great friends, despite breaking one of Nature's toughest rules. Throughout their childhood, Todd and Copper play and have fun together, everytime feeling that they'll be friends forever, until one day, Copper grows up and feels in a different way about Todd, it is time to hunt him, just as his master, Amos Slade has taught him, with the help of an older hunting dog named Chief. Somehow I feel I liked Chief, although he was somewhat Amos' sidekick, I felt a bit of innocence in Chief's actions, he had been trained to kill, so chasing Todd wasn't an act of hatred, but responsability. The film features different songs, none of them can compite with Disney's musical league, but they are cute and pleasent. One of my favorites is "Best of Friends" which describes the two youngsters' friendship at the beginning. Also, there's a very loving character in the film, named Widow Tweed, who addopts Todd at the beginning of the film. W. Tweeds most memorable scene is the "Goodbye May Seem Forever" sequence, in which the old woman decides to leave Todd on his own, this is a sad sequence, probably what makes the film so sad. What was curious about The Fox and the Hound" was the lack of a happy ending, for some reason it seems that the conflicts weren't solved. This DVD edition of The Fox and the Hound, does leave a lot to be desired, just like all the other Gold Classic Collection DVDs. This film has a great chance of becoming part of the new Masterpiece collection, so if you aren't such a big fun of the film, but do want to get it, I'd wait a little.
