Summary: Great movie, crummy DVD
Review: This is definitely one of my favorite anime. It doesn't seem as good now as I thought it was when I was a little tyke though.

However, if you already have the VHS version, there's no reason at all to buy the DVD. The only good part of this DVD is the neat looking menus. The extras are nothing special; just an interview with the guy who did the music and some storyboards. The worst part is that you can't view the movie in widescreen. Also, the sound is kind of messed up because the music gets louder and softer at weird times. The only reason you should buy this DVD is if you don't have any other version of this movie at all.

Summary: And now for a REAL review!!!
Review: This movie has superior animation quality, and a [great]soundtrack (with the exception of Stan Bush). It's a treat to behold if it's not compared to any anime. The new characters are very cool, especially Hot Rod, because of what happens to him. (I also love the young punk - old veteran pairing with Kup.) What Unicron (LOVE that voice) does to Megatron, Skywarp, Thundercracker, and the Insecticons is worth the price of the movie alone, and not just because of the technical aspect, but also the character possibilities which were explored quite nicely in the 3rd season of the TV show. This movie has some truly awesome parts. (Love that trash planet and the Junkions!) The problem with this movie is that it could have been so much more. Transformers was the Pokemon of the 80's, and all the kids of my generation were so excited to see all their favorite characters on the big screen. But when the time came, they were treated with sights of some of their favorite characters being destroyed, permenantly. I'll never forget the light fading from Prowl's eyes, the hollow shell of Wheeljack (one of my favorite guys), or Ironhide begging Megatron to stop. It was the biggest marketing mistake in the history of children's programming, and I won't say the worst part, (though other reviews will dwell on it). When I was a kid, I actually didn't care too much (I liked the 3rd season, which was about the movie characters, the best anyway), but looking back, I realize how stupid it was to just get rid of certain characters like that. Also, there's only one gestalt in it, Devastator. Where are Menasor, Superion, Bruticus, and Defensor? Where is Skyfire? And let's not forget Omega Supreme. As another review states, a battle between Omega Supreme and Devastator would have been awesome, especially since, in the 2nd season (just before the movie came out), Omega said that he and the constructicons used to be friends. It would have been another awesome character oppurtunity. As for the new Decepticons, after they enter the scene the old ones are only seen a few times, and out of the six or so new guys, only two of them have any lines, and among those who don't: Cyclonus was one of the coolest characters of the 3rd and 4th seasons. They wasted oppurtunities if you ask me. All in all, the cool stuff will just barely save the film, but the possibilities of what they could have done will haunt you long afterwards.

Summary: TRansformers!!
Review: Transformers was very popular in the 80s and continues to be popular. This is a great movie and is a very recommendable title. The animation may not be state of the art or anything, but is very fun to look at none-the-less. It has a decent plot, but has most of the remerable characters from the series. I highly recommend this to new and old fans of the Transformers series.

Summary: Excellent animation, good plot, but Optimus Prime dies?!
Review: I've been a trans fan since I was a kid but never watched the movie until years after its release. I was missing out. I heard that movie ticket sales weren't good at the time, but it seems to now be popular due to 80's nostalgia.

As stated, the presentation is very well done. Great animation (That first panning shot of Unicron is top-rate Anime quality), great voices, lots of action, and even a cool soundtrack to boot. Some of the fight scenes (like ones in Autobot city) were superb, but I have one major gripe:

Optimus Prime dies yet Megatron (turned into Galvatron) lives?! This did not make trans fans happy (and partly explains why the movie didn't sell well upon release). Ultra Magnus was pretty cool, but when I found out Hot Rod (later Rodimus Prime) became leader, it just made me think, "This sucks, no more Optimus." It's replaced by this lame guy who doesn't fight much, doesn't project himself like one of authority, and shorts himself out just so he can have a pow-wow with the Matrix. At least they kept Galvatron acting/looking pretty much the same as Megatron.

So if you liked transformers or like Anime, this one is a must-get.

As a sidenote, they eventually brought him back in the 2 part episode "The Return of Optimus Prime" (thank you!).

Summary: Not Bad, But Not Great Either
Review: There are some things to be said for this movie. The action is there and suspense is well placed at times. Some characters like Optimous Prime, Ultra Magness, Galvatron, and Unicron are well drawn and memorable. On it's own, it is a fairly good movie. But in all honesty, this is very shallow compared to several animated movies I have seen. "Scooby Doo On Zombie Island" actually had a better story line; this movie actually frightened me more; character development was stronger; the story started normal and gradually unfolded into terror; and surprise events were VERY WELL placed. The Voltron series also carried more weight. We had 5 heroes with distinct personalities; and the villains King Zarkon, Hagar the witch, and Prince Lotour carried a very frightening and chilling essence. But at times they were even likable! The animated Batman series not only tried to stay within certain boundaries of plausibility, but they also worked greatly on character development. And often, we could be in two minds as to whether we should oppose the villains or feel sorry for them. I did like the Transformers at one time. But they lack either the charm and organization of the Scooby Doo Movies, the creepy charm of the Voltron (Lion) Movies, or the superb character development of the early 90s Batman Series. This movie seems to suffer from some of Disney's traits. (A simple good guy versus bad guy plot, no gray areas, low humor, ('Me Grimlock kick butt'), and amongst other things an artificial simplistic happy ending. Couldn't the autobots have said one nice thing about their deceased noble leader Optimous Prime in the end? How about poor Prowl, Iron Hide, and Ratchet? I guess to say one nice thing about their deceased friends would have interfered with the typical Disney Happy Ending!

Review: If you criticize TFTM on it's sountrack taking away from the movie, then you have to criticize all movies from the 80's.... And it was probably the best cartoon, and most unique ones out of them all... I would recomend this movie to EVERYONE.. The only thing that I did not like about it was that, like somebody else said, there were not enough autobots in it.. I wanted to see Jetfire.. I also wanted to see a huge battle between Omega Supreme and Devestator... I think the 80s TRANSFOMRERS... THE ORININAL REAL TRANSFORMERS are so much better than these stupid idiotic Beast Wars... I watched some of the BW's and just cringed even though I tried to force myself to like them.... I sure hope eventually they bring the new Transfomers they are doing in Japan over here... all vehicles, but all different.. I could not understand the Japanese language =)

Summary: Robots Live Again
Review: I hate to say this, as I was a big Transformer fan back in the day (I was six or seven then), but if this "movie" were made today it would have died before hitting the big screen. Don't get me wrong, I think it's pretty good in its own respects but way too much is offered on this plate and so much is almost instantly taken away. First you're introduced to a new cyber planet populated by robots and then a planet that is a robot that consumes planets. Then comes the nostalgia everyone wants to relive with classic Transformer characters getting ready for the big battle. Then you're whisked away to Earth and bombarded by new characters and old alike. Have I mentioned the aweful soundtrack yet . . . it's noticably dated and weakens the movie to a great extent. The battle begins shortly and is probably the best part of the movie. Before you know it Optimus Prime is dead, Megatron is dumped into space by the ever trecherous Starscream, and planet bot Unicron reappears. From there several Decepticons are remade, including Megatron, by Unicron to do his bidding. From there you're whisked back to Earth, to the planet of Junk which populated by more robot transformers, and the Quintession planet, which is populated by yet more robots (are humans the only organic creatures in all the galaxy or what). Then it's back to Cybertron where the evil Unicron transformers, the second best part of the movie, into a robot whose body is as tall as the planet Cybertron itself. This whole movie was basically made to prepare viewers for the next couple of seasons of the Transformers cartoon (if not the new wave of toys). It's like a giant series premiere that got smashed and stomped upon. I'm still trying to figure out what the deal was with the planet of Junk and the Quintession thing. It made little sense to the movie and the questions with Quintession wasn't answered until later episodes of Transformers. I guess I'll finish up with this: You can't really ever relive your childhood.

Summary: "Me Grimlock kick butt!"
Review: If you're a fan of "The Transformers" this is a must have movie. Remaining true to the series, but stepping to the next level for the big screen, this movie does something that they never would have considered in the series. They kill characters! Not just one or two, but about six. They even go after the big kahuna... Optimus Prime. The Dinobots, my personal favorites, and Grimlock in particular get some great lines and get to literally kick butt and munch metal. It's definitely "more than meets the eye". And the soundtrack which includes "Dare to be Stupid" by Weird Al Yankovic is great too.
