Summary: Hollywood wishes it could make a movie this good!
Review: First of all let me say, you don't have to be a fan of any of the Batman series to enjoy this movie. The great quality of the writing, directing and animation make this enjoyable and accesible to anyone who likes a great quality show.

This movie has everything! A fast paced, intelligent story-line, great heroes and a brilliant set of villians. It also has most of the cast from the Batman Beyond series, and we're graced with Mark Hamil reprising his triumphant voice acting role as The Joker. (MH was born to play this part and this was his best work.)

Hollywood really does wish it could make something this good. None of the movies could touch the emotional highs and lows you hit in this film, none of the many actors who played Batman did so with the heart both Kevin Conroy (Bruce Wayne) and Will Freidle (Batman) give this production.

The series is really quality stuff and the makers of the series have excelled themselves here.

And the DVD is excelent value too, with an interesting 'Making of' short and a commentary by four of the guys who made the show. (An excellent commentary too, it held my attention for the 76 minutes of the film)

Buy this DVD!!! Now!!

Summary: better than the live-action movies
Review: I have been totally disapoited by the big budget movies, but this is a nice apology.Mark Hamill is awsome as the voice of the ever funny and diabolical Joker. I love how the story follows the mystery of the Joker's ressurection. Paul Dini really out did himself this time. It's a million times better than any of the episodes he wrote for the animated tv series. I was laughing to tears over Joker's devasating practical jokes. It was just what the Batman Beyond series needed. I can't think of a single funny villian from it. But its good to have the Joker back again. I thought it was just I rumor when I heard that they were making a animated movie with the return of the Joker. You've got to buy this if you haven't already. I've got two coppies in case one of my breaks down.

Summary: Batman Fan
Review: This is probably one of the best "Batman" movies i've seen since BATMAN RETURNS. The image is sharp and the sound makes you feel as if your actually in a movie theater. If you're going to get this movie, get the DVD. I've seen that movie on VHS, but it doesn't compare to the DVD. Some of the DVD's special features consist of animated character bios, trailers, a music video, and batman trivia. Even though i love this movie, i still wish it was the un-edited version because without it, the movie loses some of it's action and excitment. Anyway, get the DVD version of Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker, and you won't be sorry that you did!

Summary: Classic, IMO (SPOILER)
Review: I'm a huge fan of Batman. I've read the comics, I've seen all 4 live-action flicks (...), I've been a huge fan of the animated series, & I've seen every movie the show's spinned-off. I was always a little weary of Terry M. bein' the new Batman. I couldn't really picture any one else taking Bruce Wayne's place (jean-paul valley n/e one?). But I liked where "Batman Beyond" stood. They still kept connections w/ the original series, & gave hints to whereabouts of former characters like Robin & Nightwing. I don't think there was ever any kind of show like it. Anyway, with BB:ROTJ, I simply loved it. Bruce Wayne's coldness & fear is shown in spades in this movie, for he knows the dangers of the original Joker, and doesn't even want futuristic Batman goin' up against him. Terry's character is tested too. Hearing about the original Rogues Gallery, & taking on his own "Rogues Gallery" including Inque & Shriek, have made Terry sorta cocky, since he underestimates the Joker by calling him a "garden-variety clown who threatened ppl w/ whoopie cushions & squirting flowers." Boy is he wrong. The addition of former Batgirl, Barbara Gordon, adds more mystery to this movie as to why the Joker was such a real threat when she, Bruce, & Robin # 2 Tim Drake took him on...

Joker truly shows his demented, pshychotic side in this film. In the animated series, you can sorta classify Joker as well... a joke in such episodes as "Almost Got 'Im" & "Joker's Millions." Here, he is downright scary & mean. As said in the Director's Comments, Joker gases Bruce Wayne and leaves it to be found by Terry M. a la the way Terry found his father murdered. A lot of people sorta detest the way they brought Joker back to the future world, by saying it's too corny. I wouldn't say it's THAT corny. In the cut version, you see a glimpse of Robin being straped to the operating thing... that's it... but in the uncut, you Joker actually executing his plan on poor, young Robin. Once you see that, it's not corny anymore. In fact, the cut version of BB:ROTJ pales to the uncut. Anyway, you'd think that turning (SPOILER)Robin in "Joker Jr." is stupid. Well.. it isn't. Literally, Joker goes into the depths of Tim's mind, ripping apart everything he stands for, filling his mind with such hatred & insanity... who the hell would do THAT to a kid? That's just downright mean... it's chilling...

The animation is kewl despite what ppl say. I noticed that some guy who said "WHERE'S MAXINE?" That the laser part wuz a total rip-off of the classic original scene from Akira... well GUESS WHO ANIMATED THE LASER PART IN BB:ROTJ? the same guy who did Akira all those years ago ....The music is great .... nice collaboration of orchestral & rock music.

All in all, I like ROTJ. The uncut is way better however, b/c it shows a lot more of Robin's fate... it aint pretty...

Summary: I Will NOT Buy or Rent Censorship
Review: BATMAN BEYOND ' RETURN OF THE JOKER has been edited on this DVD version. Some essential dialogue and moments are missing from the story. The vision of the filmmakers has been altered. This is just not practical or acceptable. I actually did own this DVD. However, I gave it away.

Summary: WHERE IS MAXINE????
Review: I'm very dissappointed with the ROTJ movie. I was expecting a spectacular return of the best character villain in comic book history, and they gave us MUTATION!!?? How lame. Having Tim Drake transform into the Joker through a DNA micro-chip on the back of Tim's neck is ridiculous, plus, the fact that by destroying that chip was the Joker's downfall at the end, was so darn predictable, after knowing how the Joker returned. The laser satelite scene was a rip-off of the great "Akira" movie, yeah, that's original. The animation was horrible. The TV animation is best suited for Batman, because it's always dark, gritty and moody. In the movie, Gotham is clean, crisp and (Dare I say it?) bright!!? I was also expecting the same supporting cast from the TV series in the ROTJ, they weren't there. Where is Max? Of all people to leave out, they chose her, the only neutral person to know that Terry is Batman and sometime guide and sidekick. She was also Terry's girlfriend's friend. I'm white, and I feel that this is a slight racism(In a cartoon, of all places). Where were the High school supporting cast? I have the un-rated DVD, and the movie is not that good. The story line is weak. All the characters were un-characteristic of the TV series, with different personalities and behaviors. Harley Quinn is in the ROTJ and they make her look like Bruce Wayne's mother. She is suppose to be at least 10 younger than Bruce. I hope they make a better effort in the next movie(if they make one) and I hope that they keep to the same TV series format, with "Higher Grade" special effects. My advice is to rent this movie on tape, it's not even worth renting on DVD. If you want to buy a very good Batman animated movie, buy "Sub-Zero".

Summary: A Next generation classic
Review: When Batman Beyond was first announced as a series, the first response from the majority of fans was "That's so stupid, why don't you do the JLA instead?". Well, Dini, Timm and the gang have done a magnificent job on the series and this movie is the pinnacle of that achievement with a marvelously crafted story and top-notch animation. I can't recommend this movie highly enough. A fantastic follow up to the other Batman animated movies and like those others, all better than most of the live-action films. Now, a word to those who keep whining about the "censorship" issue: grow up. I've seen the uncut version and Bruce Timm himself censored the film because it would have been too intense for younger viewers. If you're blood-thirsty enough that you can't live without the more grisly elements, go get a pirated copy of the uncut version. Until then, how about letting fans of all ages enjoy the film. Go take your fight with the establishment elsewhere and get an imagination. Those of you with sense, run, do not walk and go buy this film!

Summary: WB took the very essence of this story away with censorship!
Review: First of all, let me say that before I saw the uncut & original version, I didn't know why it would make such a big difference in the plot. Yeah, so they cut out some violence to make it more suitable for kids. I protest to that since animated movies are NOT nearly just for kids, but still, I didn't think it was worth fighting over. However, I have now seen the unedited version and it was a masterpiece! People listen: it's not just violent scenes being cut out, it's the very essence of the plot! The motivations of the characters are explained and make sense in the original, but not in this severely watered down version. Things are not explained in this version but they are in the uncut: why Batman got the limp, how he gets stunned by one measely punch by the joker, exactly why some characters got out of crimefighting, why some of them feel guilt. If I had to choose which version to have my kids watch, I would have them watch the uncut, because it had a strong message showing the dangers of violence and guns, especially in the hands of youths. This message has been cut out of the new version! Why?? Why would Warner Bros. cut out such a valuable message? Because the executives don't understand what's really harmful in a movie! They don't see that violent actions by a character may or may not be harmful depending on how and why the characters did what they did. This version's changes are so drastic they are insulting to the intelligence.

The original uncut version treated the characters seriously, it gave them deep personalities and profiles, deeper and more realistic than any previous animated (or live action) Batman story. There were consequences from actions taken, real lessons learned. But now they are so watered down from the original it's sad. Now, hear me on this: I am not a big Batman Beyond fan. At best, I find it one possible ending to Wayne's career as Batman. It's like an Elseworld's graphic novel that we've had with the Dark Knight, like Frank Miller's "The Dark Knight Returns." But it's an excellent movie! I was shocked at the depth it has. But not in the edited version!

Warner Bros executives are a bunch of cowards! They have lost touch with their customers and reality. They have taken a work of art and destroyed it. Don't give them any money for this version. Make them publish the original. I wouldn't have minded if they had released both a cut and uncut version. If they want to make a Kiddie version, fine, but they should at least release the original as well. Other animated shows, like Dragon Ball Z come in both versions. I don't care if WB needed to slap a mature rating on the uncut version, fine! Just make it available to us!

Summary: Excellent movie even for older teens
Review: Even though I'm 17, I'm a very big Batman Beyond fan. I don't know why. Maybe because Batman's a teen too or the plots are entertaining. Whatever it is, Batman Beyond is a great cartoon. This movie, oh boy. Little kids really shouldn't watch it. It's actually quite creepy. The joker comes back to to cause trouble in Gotham and of course Batman has to stop him. The interesting part of the movie is finding out why Bruce Wayne and Barbara Gordon are so shocked that he's back and why they hesitate to tell Terry something about their pasts relating to the joker. It's quite a shocker.
