Summary: a terrible representation of the intricacy of Tolkien's work
Review: This video along with all the other animated films mocks the significance of Tolkien's work to the fantasy genre. The only possible reason a person would enjoy this film is if s/he is a child or has never read the books. Support of these movies is a tell tale example of the weakening literacy of the population.

Summary: The movie is decent, but the book was lots better.
Review: The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien is one of my all time favorite books. I hope you all get a chance to read it sometime, for pleasure or for a class. This animated movie is better than what I expected from a cartoon, but it's still slightly geared toward little kids. It's a good compliment to the book, but to truly appreciate the storyline, it doesnt' cut the mustard. It leaves out some very key episodes and characters that were some of my favorite in the book. Where are Elrond and Beorn?!? It's a good movie that I've watched several times, and I would purchase the Lord of the Rings movies by the same people too if I ever find out that they were made. But if you really want to enjoy the story for the awesome adventrue story it is, read the book first!

Summary: Not Bad
Review: Being a Tolkien fanantic I collect anything pertaining to him. This movie is one of the few attempts to portray Tolkien on the movie screen that did well. The Return of the King by Rankin/Bass was a horrible idea. They jumped from The Hobbit to the last book of The Lord of the Rings without filling in the middle. The movie was terrible as well. Fortunately for those who don't read the books,Ralph Bakshi's version of The Lord of the Rings fills in some of the story in The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers. However, with The Hobbit they did a fairly good job. I was impressed with how well they balanced out the feel of the story, which is important to Tolkien fans, and made it understandable for children and those who haven't read the book. I guess we'll have to wait for Peter Jacksons movie of The Lord of the Rings so we can see the books on screen played by live actors!!

Summary: I have always loved this show!!!!
Review: I am a teenager, and ever since I can remember I watched this show because I absolutely loved it and was really captivated by Bilbo, Gandalf, the dwarves, and the elves. Recently I read the book and would have to say that of all the book-to-movie produtions this one wasn't that bad. I admit some of better details were left out, but what can you expect? I recommend this for any one who loves fantasy and adventure!!

Summary: A great book dumbed down
Review: The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien is a great book for kids and adults, and I highly recommend it to anyone. This movie, however, does a poor job of conveying the book. I know that a movie can never do everything a book does, but there are times when they could have done a lot better. The dwarves were OK, but Bilbo looked like a girl, the elves looked old and bent, and the goblins? What can I say, they were huge, bigger than Gandalf, their mouths were so big they could swallow a hobbit whole. Beorn was gone, too. I know this was made to be a children's movie so they have to "dumb it down" a little, but they could at least have been accurate.

Review: The movie provides an excellent overview for children and focuses on the essence of the Hobbit without providing too much detail or violence that would detract from the magic of the book. Well worth ownership by children and adults alike.

Summary: More Than Just a Book-to-Movie
Review: Many Tolkien fans who have written reviews say that this movie has done bad things to the book. They say it oversimplifies it, that it takes out parts that shouldn't've been taken out, that it turns it from a novel for mature readers into a movie for 'kids'. I've read the book, and been watching this movie for many years. I have to disagree that this is a movie just for children-- when I was younger and watched this movie, I did not realize the philosophical lessons present from beginning to end. Bilbo begins his day just like any other day-- he washes his dishes, cleans his hobbit hole, and leaves it to go outside and smoke his pipe. Then, from the suddeness of destiny, his life is changed. He's taken from his quiet home in the Shire, to begin his Greatest Adventure. An adventure that changes him from shy, unsure, afraid, and reluctant, into a confident, wiser, and better man. "The Chances, the Changes, are all yours to make. The mold of your life is in your hands to break." This happens to all of us in our lives. We leave our happy, unknowing-of-danger homes, and are taken through hard times, until finally, we take those steps into the cave, and we face our fears. "...but to take those last steps. That would be the bravest of all things. Whatever happens afterwards is nothing."The songs are beautiful, with tunes that will have you humming at work. The song 'The Greatest Adventure', if you listened to carefully, can tell you much about what you will have to do in your own hard times. This is a beautiful, wonderful movie. Not just the animation and the music, but the lesson it can teach. "So, Mr. Bilbo Baggins... Do you turn back?"

Summary: It was an attempt...at most
Review: Ok I have read the book several times, and enjoy it. Tolkien is great. This movie is not. The plot jumps from adventure to adventure giving no time at all for anything to be enjoyed. What is with the American voices! Gandalf isn't from Alabama! The soundtrack is alright. But I can't believe that they put in that song where the goblins are chasing them with that awful 70's rock drum beat. This movie is only worth it for little kids.

Summary: The film left out significant characters
Review: I noticed in this film that my favorite character Beourn was sadly left out. The film also jumped around alot. The goblins looked really pathetic, along with the woodland elves. It never explained how the dwarves got captured by the Woodland elves in the movie.But it was good I must say for an overall feeling and is great for younger Hobbit fans.
