Summary: X-Men Evolution Mania!!!
Review: Personally, i like x-men evolution (evo) better than the 90's series. Evo has better plots, better lines, and the characters look great. This box set is a really good value. Not only does it have all of season one, it also includes tons of bonus features. If you're a fan of x-men, this is something you can't live without. Great gift idea.

Summary: X-men for the Bubble Gum Brigade
Review: Any "traditional" X-men fan over 25 will be disappointed with X-men Evolution. Fans who did not grow up reading the X-men comics or cherishing the original X-men Animated Series may like it, (people under 15) but these fans are not the hard core base of X-men fans to which I refer.

So many bad ideas went into this Evolution series. First of all, I can't get past the ridiculous notion of the X-men attending the local public high school! (And with Mystique as the principal?)

The X-men's school was the Xavier School for the Gifted - Period!

In addition to that, the idea of the "good" mutants going to this same high school as the "bad" mutants is just plain stupid. They were mortal enemies, and no way could they co-exist in the same school, even with the conflicts that happen in these stories.

Furthermore, the introduction, at this early stage of the X-men story-line, of characters like Nightcrawler, (whose depiction in this series stinks,) Rogue, (who is portrayed like some punk Gothic chick) and the new mutants is just not the way it happened nor should it happen even in a revised edition like this. I can handle Storm and Wolverine as early mentors, because they are supposed to be older like they are shown to be here, but the others were just not in existence at this stage of X-men history. Ice Man and Beast were supposed to be there from the beginning just like Cyclops and Jean. The Angel, who was my favorite, was another original member of the team, but he doesn't make his appearance until later seasons.

And since when were the twins, Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch enemies as they were portrayed here? They were supposed to be as close as any brother/sister twins could ever be. Pietro was always supposed to be defending his sister to the end. He was never terrified of her. And what's with this show making Wanda so super powerful like that? She wasn't so super-mighty as portrayed here.

Lastly, I must criticize the art because it is just hard to look at. I know they are going for a stylized look like in some of the comics, but, like another critic observed, the noses are just plain bad. And the huge feet bother me as well.

If YOU like it just because it is something on the X-men being done, that's great, I suppose it is better than nothing.

But for me the original series in the 90s, (yes, that means the original "series") was far superior, (I don't understand how anyone could criticize the art in that show. In my view the art in many of those original series episodes rivaled even the best of Disney, especially "The Phoenix Saga", and the "Dark Phoenix Saga", as well as many more: beautiful art!)

Sadly, what we have now in "Evolution" is some Hollywood executive's vision of a revised X-men universe, targeting today's bubble gum brigade, (ie: the high school setting, Spyke and his skateboard.) Hollywood has always thought they know better than the creators of the genre, but usually, like in this case, it only results in a bastardization of what so many of us grew up loving.

Summary: Nothing beats the mid-1990s cartoon
Review: as someone who religiously watched the X-Men cartoon from the mid-1990s, when I heard about this show, I was naturally excited. However, upon watching it, I found it to be rather lacking in any kind of depth which made the older show so cool.

Summary: Evolution
Review: Evolution is a very poorly written/animated series that attempts to go off the bases of the first X-Men movie, which was virtually nothing like the comics many of us are used to. I found all of the XMen in high school boring and acting out of character. Not to mention they had half the XMen working for Magneto or weren't seen.
The '90's cartoon was much better, and actually followed most of the storylines. Don't waste your money on XMen Evolution.

Summary: Very Good
Review: I am a big X-Men fan, i like almost anything Marvel has done, and it is true, this series cannot compare to the older x-men cartoon.

this one is better.

now, i will watch the older one whenever i can, it has started coming back on tv recently and i watch it almost every day, but honestly, there are many times that i find it...boring. i mean, i love the plot lines, but there is far too much talking, far too many flashbacks for no apparent reason, and far too much jubilee, and not nearly enough gambit.

but this review is supposed to be about the new series, sorry i got off topic there for a minute

x-men evolution, as the other guides have already mentioned, portrays the x-men as high schoolers (with the exception of a few), and gives some great development for characters. i especially like nightcrawler in this series, often times he is betrayed as a thing to be scared of, and very serious, but in evolution he is the fun loving character he should have been all along, a big furball, or the fuzzy blue elf as he is sometimes referred to. cyclops is very serious, and looks out for everyone alot, like always. jean grey is pretty much on the same level as cyclops, but not quite as extreme. they also have a on and off relationship, but they were always destined to be, right? spyke is new, basically a teenage boy form of marrow, big trouble maker and storm's nephew, though he has a few good plot lines through out the show. then shadowcat is also a main character, the girl that can walk through walls (or any other solid object), who is an average teenage...mutant...ninja tur-oh wait, i mean girl. wolvie is the same old guy, as is professor X, and storm is pretty much the same as always too, but luckily she has left her "catch phrases" such as "power of wind, get real windy!" back in the older show. oh yeah, and rogue, at first she is with the brotherhood, but then she joins the x-men, never really sure where she belongs. i guess never being able to touch another person will freak you out some.

there is also a large selection of bad guys. there is the "brotherhood of mutants" who at first is led by magneto, but they tend to go off on their own alot. they are made up of blob, fat and stupid, quake, he can...make earthquakes and has a thing for shadowcat, quicksilver, magneto's beloved (or not so) son, and toad, who has all the powers, and intelligence, of a toad. magneto has the same old plans for global domination for the "homo-superiors" (mutant kind), and mystique is his loyal as ever follower...when we know who she is at the time. there are also others that follow magneto, but arent part of the brotherhood (not in high school with them...) including sabertooth, wolverine's arch foe, pyro, the australian with attitude, colossus, the guy with the awesome body armour that comes out of no where, and gambit. this was a huge problem with alot of people, putting gambit as a bad guy, but i rather like it. gambit was trained by his father to be a theif, and as a bad guy he really got the opportunity to use those skills, and do some very cool moves with his powers besides throwing cards at everyone like when he was a good guy (dont worry, he still does though)

now i know i didnt tell you any of the plots of the episodes, but hopefully all you x-men fans that are afraid to try this show will see that despite some changes, it isnt the bane of x-men history like some have suggested. it is a great show.

Summary: Fresh, Original, and Exciting
Review: I am so tired of people dissing the series, escpecially the ones who claim the original series to be 'far superior'. It was good, but the animation is so horribly executed that I have to cringe. With X-Men: Evolution, they did something new and fresh, much like the Ultimate X-men comic. It cut its ties to the comic, which was wonderful, because I go tired of how the original series turned stories that took 10 issues to tell into 22 minute self-contained episodes. As for the people who claim they 'know' the comics and this has nothing to do with them, they are simply not well-versed enough to notice the nods to the comic book, such as the ninth episode in the 3rd season, where they grouped the Evolution counterparts to the original five X-men together. This is a good series, with better animation and more interesting character design. These guys do not wear yellow spandex to the opera.

Summary: The Evolution Begins...
Review: I don't care if this follows the comics or not, I love this show. The show sort of "goes back in time" when the X-Men were teens (except for Professor X, Wolverine, Beast, and Storm). It begins with them getting their powers, while the rest just deals with them having problems with the Brotherhood (Mainly Mystique), the Acolytes, humans, Principal Edward Kelly, and of course teen stuff (angst, love, etc.).

The only complaints I have about this show are:
1. Risty Wilde (A.K.A. Mystique in disguise) looks too much like Psylocke.
2. Making Spyke too much like Marrow.
3. Shadowcat sounds very unintelligent with the Valley Girl talk.
4. Rogue and Nightcrawler's accents need tweeking.
5. Nightcrawler needs to stop wearing the spandex in public.

Those are just little things above. If you would like to see this, buy it! I can assure you 80% that you'll like it.

Summary: New vs old
Review: I loved the 90's Fox series. That being said, that show was awful. If I got the chance I would buy a box set, but the show was pretty bad. I suppose it's possible that in another ten years I'll look at X-Men Evolution and think it's no good, but for now I'll have to give it a thumbs up. I can understand some fans not liking Evolution because it messes with the story so much, Cyclops in Highschool, while Storm is an adult woman, with Multiple man at about 13 or 14. But if you think you can get past it, or if that doesn't bother you at all, I can promise you, it's worth it.
