Summary: "The Last Unicorn," Enchanting
Review: I recall when the book came out and was overjoyed years later to find the movie in VHS for my children. Although the artwork is not compelling, the story and the characters are engaging for both adults and children. The voice acting by Bridges, Arkin, and Farrow is strong and consistent. Although following the quest format typical for fantasy, the story never feels episodic as it moves toward a realization of the characters' destinies. I strongly recommend it. My daughter, now 16, says it is one of her favorites, and she has been watching it for over ten years.

Summary: My favorite movie of all time
Review: I remember watching this movie as a little girl over and over until our Beta VCR wore out. It stuck with me for many years, until I ran across it again in my late teens while babysitting. When I watched it again, I found that it captivated my interest just as it had when I was a child. It is one of the most beautiful and poignant stories out there. The Japanese Anime style animation is stunning, and the vocal talent is top-notch. It holds true to the novel from which it was adapted, which I also recommend highly.

It has a lot of plot points and jokes that are a bit over kids heads, and a bit of language some parents may find innapropriate, so you may want to view it before your kids do if you get it for them.

Summary: For six years i've been searching for it...
Review: Ever sinse i watched The Last Unicorn in primary school, i've been searching EVERYWHERE to find it. There was an option for my class, to either visit a gladiator and get an autograph, or stay and watch this video called the last unicorn. I stayed, and i've never regretted it. There was only about 8 of us, and as soon as it started we were fasinated by it. I can only vagualy[can't spell] remember parts, but the rest of the class came in about 20 minutes before the end, and guess what? We weren't allowed to watch the rest. The bull completely hypnotised me! I love fantasy and scary things and the bull terrified me! I can remember a tower with a clock, and a red kind of airy bull along with cages and an eagle, but that's all.

Review: The Last Unicorn movie is the best movie ever. THIS MOVIE HAS ADVENTURE,AND DANGER. This movie is the best one you'll ever see!A must have for unicorn lovers :) This movie was a christmas present for me from my Daddy, and it was almost impossible to find, and my Mommy got me the book to read, so I COULD READ IT AT SCHOOL. THIS IS A MOVIE YOU'LL NEVER FORGET.

Review: 1982's "The Last Unicorn" is a fantastic animated fairy tale that's heavily drawn from medieval folk lore. Both whimsical and eerie, the film concerns a Unicorn who goes on a quest to find others like her. What makes this film so precious is how it isn't candy-coated at all; while dealing with myth, sorcery, and chivalry, "The Last Unicorn" delicately blends high-quality cell animation with ethereal pop folk songs by the band America. In addition, many of the characters' voices are provided by talented actors; they include Mia Farrow, Angela Lansbury, Christopher Lee, Keenan Wynn, Alan Arkin, and Jeff Bridges. Best of all, the movie was directed by Arthur Rankin, Jr. and Jules Bass, the same people who created "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" and "The Little Drummer Boy."
Concerned with her own existence, the Unicorn finds out that all of her immortal ancestors were driven away by the Red Bull, a towering ball of fire bearing the horns of a wild ox. While gaining more and more clues relating to the Bull's whereabouts, she develops a friendship with a klutzy magician named Schmendrick and a rebellious wench named Molly Grue. Eventually, the group discovers in horror that the gloomy, tyrannical King Haggard hired the Red Bull to push all of the world's unicorns into the sea; for his own selfish amusement, the King intended to watch these creatures drift in and out of the tides forever.
Viewers will enjoy the numerous adventures featured in this film: you will hear the sparkling tunes of a singing Butterfly, visit Mommy Fortuna's sideshow of homemade horrors, and slurp rat soup with Captain Cully and his band of outlaws. In the movie's latter half, Schmendrick casts a powerful spell to transform the Unicorn into a human girl, who he named Lady Amalthea. While he and Molly serve King Haggard in his fortress, his son Prince Lear falls in love with Amalthea. She, meanwhile, is torn between having to rescue the trapped unicorns or marrying the hero she's infatuated with.
I highly recommend this movie to anyone who indulges in 1980's nostalgia. Despite being made 21 years ago, the quality of "The Last Unicorn" will never age. If only THIS was put on DVD format!

Summary: Not for children under 12
Review: I picked up this video at my local library for my school-aged children. It was in the juvenile section and had a G rating so I thought it was safe. Thank goodness I stayed in the room to watch it with them. While there is a meaningful story and superb fantasy element, this movie is not for younger children. It scared the pants off me, a thirtysomething viewer who made it through The Ring and The Exorcist. The animation is frightening; the language is inappropriate; the themes are too adult. Please be warned. If you're interested in showing this video to your children, watch it on you own first. Better yet, get the book.

Summary: It would have been 5 Stars, but Jeff Bridges sings.
Review: If you're looking for a great video for the kids to watch, this should make the list. Although some scenes might plod along too slowly for very young viewers, it is still a charming story for young and old alike. The voice cast is first rate, with a particular tip of the hat to Sir Christopher Lee, who should seriously consider more voice over work.
The downside in the cast is Jeff Bridges, who seems to want to be somewhere else, other than doing his role. On top of that, he sings. We're talking Clint Eastwood-Paint Your Wagon-I Talk To The Trees BAD! In the old days, if a prominent actor, or actress couldn't perform part of their role, someone else was called in, such as a stuntperson, body double, or singer. Audrey Hepburn and Natalie Wood had voice subs. Why, oh WHY, couldn't they do the same here?
The animation is not too shabby for Rankin-Bass. In fact, the art design is quite stylish at times. The musical score is well done, yet tends to be a bit loud. Film length is reasonable for young tykes, with a good mix of humor and minimal violence. I would recommend this movie to all parents.

Summary: A Truly Beautiful Film!
Review: When I was about four or five years old I loved to watch The Last Unicorn. Spotting it at Blockbuster, I decided to rent it, wondering how I would see it now.

I was worried when I saw that the animation was Rankin/Bass, but in the end I found it to be a visual confection.

Some of the characters do look a little cheesy, but most of the time the animation dazzled me. In particular Mommy Fortuna's tree stump hat is very cool, forestscapes are ethereal, and I love Molly's BIG brown eyes.

My favorite scene is the meeting of Molly and the Unicorn...The woman is angered that the Unicorn came to her at a low point in her life rather than when she was "new and innocent." After that schpiel Molly embraces her and whispers, "I forgive you."

To my mind, this is one of those works like The Little Prince or The Mouse and His Child that is meant for chidren but is sincere enough to captivate adults as well. Well done.

Summary: Surprised this video is available to children
Review: My two daughters watched this video. My husband and myself took turns watching it with the girls because it was so long. During my time watching it I noticed some adult words that shouldn't be in there and also female nudity on a bird that was a bit outrageous. Also my husband observed some female anatomy on a tree that was not for children. Parents, please watch this video with your children if you do buy it. As it is such a long movie I imagine many parents just let the kids watch it and go fix dinner or do other things...not in the same room. I got bored and left after a while. I don't think this is a cartoon for children. I may be the only one.
