Summary: Popeye the TV Man
Review: Fair warning to fans of the classic Fleisher/Famous Studios Popeye cartoons-Look elsewhere! These Popeye shorts were from "The All-New Popeye Hour" by Hanna-Barbera, and don't have the same punch of the older series (Pun intended). This DVD is not recommended for Popeye purists.

Summary: Popeye the TV Man
Review: I bought this thinking of the old great cartoons of my childhood, but alas these are later ones.

I suggest the "70 Years of Popeye" for the real deal!

Summary: Fun, Yet Not the Popeye Most People Remember
Review: The cartoons in this collection of Popeye cartoons were produced somewhere around 1978-1980, when parents groups and networks were really uptight about violence in childrens' programming. So these cartoons aren't as violent as the past versions of Popeye were, but they do have a few redeeming qualities. First, the Famous Studios designs weren't used, returning Popeye to his previous design, except for the hat. These shorts are probably among the last work by Jack Mercer voicing and writing for Popeye (although it is a shame that Mercer was the only original voice in the cast). The disc is set up into two sets of cartoons: The first nine are sports-oriented, with football, bike racing, tennis, etc. (My favorite of these is "The Lonliness of the Long Distance Popeye" in which Popeye, Olive Oyl and Bluto compete in the Boston Marathon, not so much for the story, but because it looks like the animators have never been to Boston in their lives...) The second set are all nautical themed cartoons (which is a no-brainer for a Popeye cartoon). "A Goon Gone Gooney" and "Popeye Goes Sailing" were the best of this batch. This DVD is a nice collection of one of the more unusual incarnations of Popeye, but I think Popeye's fans (who are not just fans of Max Fleisher's Popeye, but like all things Popeye) might like it as a sampler of this mostly forgotten series.

Summary: Do you like SCOOBY DOO?
Review: These cartoons are typical of late-1970s Hanna-Barbera TV output: cheap, poorly-animated, and horribly hampered by ridiculous network standards and practices. They stink.

Summary: Entertaining Popeye
Review: This is a batch of Popeye TV-cartoons from Hanna Barbera's "All New Popeye Hour". They could no longer feature Popeye and Bluto slugging it out. Despite that, the animation is fine and the scripts are entertaining. It's true, they're not the ol' Popeye that most people remember (and want to see on home video) but they are entertaining.

Summary: Don't Waste Time or Money
Review: Totally useless. The worst Popeye cartoons ever made. They are Hanna-Barbara, but now where near the quality of their better stuff. Actually not as good as their worst stuff.
