Summary: Perfectly balanced
Review: Many cartoons have too many characters that are overly cutesy to be loved by anyone other than a child. Others have themes that are perhaps too mature for anybody other than adults to understand or enjoy. There are few, a precious few, that manage to be cutesy, while also having more mature characters that aren't cutesy at all, but more on the serious side. A combination like this is likely to appeal to both the young, middle-aged, and old. "Ice Age" is one of the latter.

It doesn't seem likely, but somehow, a herd consisting of a mammoth, a sloth, and a tiger have all come together as one to take a baby human back to its family, or have they? Tigers eat mammoths, and possibly humans as well. Humans hunt mammoths because they love their ivory tusks. How can it possibly work out in the end??

As said, "Ice Age" succeeds in having characters that are cutesy and funny, while also having more serious minded characters. Manny the mammoth couldn't be much more serious. He doesn't laugh much at all, and he thinks the silly, airheaded antics of the hilarious Sid the sloth are just that. Silly. Diego the sabretooth tiger tries to play nice, but he isn't half as nice as he seems...or is he? Scrat the squirrel doesn't really play into the story at all, other than to just pop out of nowhere to chase a precious acorn around as if he couldn't live without it; he never once ceases to be amusing with his screams and the troubles he always seems to run into.

As you're watching the movie, you'll be laughing your blank off while you also get into the plot and root for the good guys. This is because each and every one of the characters are interesting, entertaining, etc. You'll be amazed by the spectacular animation, especially when it comes to the characters; they really seem to come alive. Not to mention that many parts of the landscape, such as the drowning waterfalls, are so well animated that they appear realistic, to say the least. "Ice Age" is an all-around great movie. As much as I liked other films that are somewhat like it, such as "Toy Story" and "Dinosaur", I'd have to say that I like "Ice Age" the best so far; I have yet to see "Shrek" or "Monsters, Inc."

Usually, when I finish watching a DVD, no matter how good or bad the movie was, I keep procrastinating when it comes to checking out the special features. This wasn't the case with "Ice Age." Upon finishing the movie and reading about the special features on the back of the case, I couldn't wait to check out the boat loads of features on the second disc. You'll see what I mean when you watch the movie; you'll want to see more of that mysterious little squirrel, Scrat. He has his own animated short, "Scrat's Missing Adventure". Along with this, there are six deleted scenes, an award-winning animated film: "Bunny" (very nice!), the HBO Behind the Scenes special of "Ice Age", scene-specific commentary by John Leguizamo as Sid, etc. You can also see how the characters were animated, play a few games (i.e., find where Scrat is hiding, find the best match, etc.), and much more.

To get down to the nitty gritty, the "Ice Age" DVD is worth buying just for the movie by itself, but with the tons of special features that are included, it's an even better value. It's the must-have animated film of the year.

Summary: Immensly unfunny
Review: Ray Ramano is not funny. I guess not everybody "loves" him. John Leguiziamo was not very funny (his accent was more annoying), but Ilike him. Denis Leary, a very funny man, wasn't good (his talents can't be utilized in a childrens film). The animation and dvd were good, but does it even matter? Thank you for taking the time to read my review. God Bless America!

Summary: Nice Deversion
Review: If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, than "Ice Age" is some flatterer. The film is extremely reminiscent of PIXAR films such as "Toy Story" and "A Bug's Life", and "Monster's Inc" in pacing, comedy, and feel. However, it does not come quite close enough to the quality of the previously mentioned movies. The plot follows a group of pre-historic creatures, including a gruff mammoth named Manny, a goofy sloth named Sid, and a saber-toothed tiger with questionable motives named Diego, who risk all odds to return a lost human child to its family. None of the characters are extremely likable and somewhat annoying with the exception of a supporting played named Scrat who does not utter a single word in the film. The animation is not up to the same quality of the PIXAR films, but is not too bad. The DVD also includes plenty of bonus features that make watching the film all the more enjoyable such as deleted scenes and audio commentary. If you enjoyed "Monsters Inc", you should enjoy this film.

Summary: An awful film
Review: This is easily one of the worst pieces of derivative filmmaking that I've seen in years. The character rip-offs are shameless, from the mismatched buddy pair to the horrible villains, and there's absolutely nothing redeeming in the script, which is basically nothing but a cookie-cutter story with supposedly funny jokes and visuals running throughout. This may be good for the under-five crowd, but for anyone to say that it comes anywhere close to comparing to Shrek or Toy Story or A Bug's Life or Monsters, Inc., for example, is a great disservice to these fine films. This is one to miss--I wouldn't even think of watching it for free, and if I were given a copy as a gift, I'd give it away as soon as I could to the nearest two-year-old.

Summary: What a Great Movie!
Review: Now don't let the description (animated) fool you. This movie is probably the best of it's kind ever made. For children or Adults a must for your DVD colection. You will want to see it again and again! Folow the story of a pact of proistoric animals acompaning a human child back to its parents getting into lots of conflicts and crazy situations. There is enough humor and fun for everybody and the animations are better than ever.

Summary: WOW.
Review: This is my 3 year old sons favorite movie. This also has one of my most favorite scenes out of any movie, the opening scene. You have to have a Dolby Digital 5.1 system to really appreciate it, and it has to be up as loud as it will go. The movie is great for kids and I think I have watched it at least 70 times now :)

Summary: "We are the weirdest herd I've ever seen"
Review: Ice Age is the next amusing chapter in the computer-animated family film genre. Or perhaps it would be more accurate to say it is a rehash of the previous chapters. It is certainly a fun film, with witty word play and some exciting action sequences, including an ice-slide ride which every child (and probably most adults too) would love to try out. But one can't help feeling that the story is a little tired through previous overuse. A group of unlikely acquaintances - this time comprised of a mammoth, a sloth and a sabre-toothed tiger - set out on a quest to return the obligatory lost-but-cute child to his family.

The animation is adequate, but nowhere near the high standard set by Monsters, Inc. This is particularly noticeable with regards to the various animals' fur, which is disappointingly static. Additionally the background landscapes are very basic and the snow is somehow just too pristine. Having said that however, the film does have some nice attention to detail, such as the eye tic in Scrat - the acorn-obsessed and incredibly unlucky squirrel. The misadventures of Scrat are the best parts of the movie, and made more impressive by the fact that, as he doesn't speak a single word of dialogue, the humour is entirely visual.

There are also nice character touches evident in Manny the mammoth (who has amazingly emotive eyes), and a sequence in which a cave painting comes alive and depicts a tragic scene from his past is very effective. While an emotional sequence like this gives the movie a heart, its descent at the finale into saccharine sentimentality is somewhat cloying, but will probably satisfy the kids (and anyone else who requires a film to have a happy ending).

Summary: Good for kids movie collection.
Review: This is a very cute movie and one that will be watched if added to your children or grandchildren's movie collection. I bought this for my daughter for Christmas as it was one of the movies she asked for. We did see this in the movie theaters and it was humorous. Lot's of adults as well as children and there was quite a lot of laughter going on in the theater. Children under the age of 5 or 6 may not understand the movie or what's going on but they will chuckle at some of the antics and they will enjoy it. Adults will enjoy it as well as long as they look at it as just humor.

Summary: Good movie
Review: The movie is about a trio of prehistorical mammals, a mammoth named Manfred, a sloth named Sid and a sabertooth tiger named Diego. These three creatures set out on a journey to return a human orphan baby back to his people. Diego, on the other hand was assigned to turn over the baby to the sabertooth cats. But, along the way Diego learns about loyalty and frienship and at a key moment where their party was to be anbused by the cats Diego risks his life to save them.

The animation is quite good especially when they fall through the ice tunnel. There is one touching scene in which Manfred sees a cave drawing of hunters killing a mammoth family. Apparently he lost his family to hunters, which explains is sullen withdrawn mood.

A key element in this movie is the escapades of a sabertooth squirrel who appears throughout the movie, especially at the begining and the end, trying to bury an acorn. He must have taken survival lessons from Wiley Coyote. He serves as a comic relief during the movie. In general this is a good movie for the whole family. It is not on the same level as Shrek or Toy Story but it is enjoyable with a few good laughs.
