Summary: Awesome Sequel to Wizard of Oz.
Review: I bought this movie the other day cause i love Fantasy and i am satisified with it. Dorothy ( Fariuza Balk) goes back to Oz and finds it a disaster area, she meets new friends and must rescue the kingdom from a evil worse than the Wicked Witch of the west. good-acting, a well-written script and lots of fun that makes this a Trip that you and your kids would love.

Summary: Wow... great movie!
Review: The first time I saw this movie, I was about 10 years old, and it was stuck in my mind ever since. I just recently bought it and it brought back all those memories that stuck in my mind throughout. It was better the second time around being that I can now fully understand the movie in it's grand scale. Great effects and the way they implemented the original movie into this new plot was fascinating. Anyone who liked the original movie and is in for a new twist and tangent should get it!

Summary: Flawless and perfect Sequel to the Great Wizard of Oz.
Review: In the summer of 1985, a film called " Return to Oz" bombed at the box-office, failed with critics but it did recieved a cult following including with Children of the 80's. the plot starts with " Dorothy Gale" ( Fariuza Balk) who goes back to Oz and finds it in the hands of Princess Mombi and The Nome King. Now it's up to her with new pals " Tic-Tok", " Gump" and " Jack Pumpkinhead" to restore the whole mess that is going on in Oz. One of my top fantasies of all time with it's prequel Wizard of Oz, it's great for Kids but it gets a little scary and dark at times, but Who cares! it's still a good time for the whole family.

Recommendations: The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, The Last Unicorn, Wizard of Oz, The Evil Dead, City of Lost Children, Brazil, Time Bandits, Adventures of Baron Munchausen, The Fifth Element, Total Recall, Neverending Story, The Black Cauldron, Willow, and Sword in the Stone.

Summary: There's no movie like Return to Oz
Review: This movie was a movie that I so much enjoyed watching as a child and still do. Faruiza Balk did an amazing job as Dorothy Gale in her first movie ever. This movie had everything:great villains, beautiful scenery, great acting, laughter, chills, suspense, tears. At first when I saw that this movie was a continuation of The Wizard of Oz, I thought "Oh great a sequel, it probably won't be good at all" I thought that with many sequels they can't really live up to the first movie, but I was proved wrong. Return to Oz is amazing in every way. The villains such as the evil Princess Mombie was played to perfection by Jean Smart. Her acting was amazing, and even to this day she still gives me chills when I see her in this movie. The wheelers probably scared me the most and still do, just hearing their wheels squeak and their evil laughter frightens me, and the Gnome King is another great villain. It was nice to see some of the old Wizard of Oz characters return such as Scarecrow, the Tin Man and The Cowardly Lion and see new ones like Tik Tok, the Gump, Jack Pumpkinhead and Dorothy's companion in this movie Billina instead of Toto. If you loved Wizard of Oz then you will absolutely love this movie. Don't spend your money on some cheap, bloody slasher flick. Spend it on something worthwhile. Return to Oz is what great movie sequels are all about.

Summary: Dorothy Works It Back In Oz
Review: Not matter what anyone says...this is one incredible movie. If you have ever read one of L. Frank Baum's Oz books you know what I mean. The movie looks exactly how Mr. Baum depicted it one hundred years ago. It is turn of the century chic. I am well aware that the movie deals with some pretty dark themes and images; a real movie witch in Mombi, Dorothy on the verge of getting refried brains, and those terrifying gnomes that pop out of the wall...but hey-that's life. The actors in the film all turn it out! What a great job! Ms. Balk really works it in hyper drive, creating a great Dorothy. Give the girl credit-she did have to follow Judy Garland! I was so happy to see the return of the ruby slippers, and I was overjoyed with the special effects. The Scarecrow, Jack, Tik Tok, and the Gump looked exactly how I pictured them when I read the books as a little kid. It is amazing. Now if you have a DVD player, then pick this one up. If not then buy it on VHS(widescreen!), cause this is one absolutely amazing and very touching film.

Summary: great movie
Review: One of the best films of all time, Disney's sequel to THE WIZARD OF OZ is a scary, deliciously malevolent story of a huge scale.

Fairuza Balk, in her film debut, plays Dorothy, who is still troubled from her last trip to Oz, losing sleep and driving Aunt Em (Piper Laurie) and Uncle Henry (Matt Clark) to distraction.

A sadistic doctor, Worley (Nicol Williamson), and a ghostly assistant (Jean Marsh), say they will "cure" the girl with a machine. They really are going to use electro-shock therapy on her. At the last minute she is saved by a mysterious girl, falls into a swollen river and wakes up back in Oz. But Oz has mysteriously changed. The Yellow Brick Road has been ripped up, Emerald City has lost its lustre, and all inhabitants have been turned to stone.

Dorothy finds that Oz is now ruled by the evil Nome King (Nicol Williamson) and the head-hunting Princess Mombi (Jean Marsh). Will she survive her return to Oz?

David Shire's music is wonderful, performed by the London Symphony Orchestra. Although RETURN TO OZ is a Disney film, it's not recommended for young children.

A modern classic.

Summary: Excellent Movie
Review: I don't claim to be an OZ expert. I haven't read all the books, I did read the Wizard of OZ when I was younger. I first saw this movie when I was 7 years old, so obviously I didn't understand it very well, I recently began thinking about it, and decided to purchase it. I wasn't disappointed. If you like movies involving the collapse of Empires or cities in ruins and goverments conquered, you'll love this movie. I like it because Dorothy returns to find everything she loved destroyed, and somehow overcomes tremendous odds to thwart the enemy and save the day. I have read several other reviews on this site, and understand that this movie is almost nothing like the book, or at least there are several differences. In my mind, that doesn't mean that it isn't a good movie. For Fairuza Balk's first film, I think she did an excellent job, and has continued to do just that in a number of movies since.

Summary: Almost as magical as the first!
Review: Fairuza Balk as Dorothy returns to Oz and has several adventures with many familiar and some not so familiar characters. Some of the scenes might be a little scary for very small children, but this movie is a real treat for dyed-in-the-wool Oz fans. The special effects are MUCH better than the original Oz movie's. Balk's Dorothy is much younger more real than Judy Garland's.

Summary: Dark and Brilliant
Review: This film is billed as a childrens fantasy film. The fantasy part of it is true, but the real fact of the matter is that this is not for children. This film is much darker than its song and dance original. This film is not much of a sequel either. This film takes place in an Oz that is foreign to those that grew up with the Wizard of Oz. The sets are dark and dirty, all of the characters that we once knew have been turned to stone. It is now up to Dorothy to turn everything in Oz back to normal. This is a film that is sure to scare most children that think it will be as fun and cheery as the original. For the rest of us it is a great ride into the dark. The plot keeps the film going into different, new directions into the heart of this Oz that is over run by the darkness. Truly original and truly entertaining.

Summary: A beloved fantasy...in Oz*
Review: First of all I'd like to clear up something that has bugged me. L. Frank Baum (creator and author of Oz and its stories) never wrote about the Emerald City in ruins, a crumbled Yellow Brick Road, or Dorothy in shock therapy as most reviewers seem to state unknowingly. Those were additions made by Disney, Baum did have the detachable heads and a Nome King (which was depicted as a Santa Claus looking character and he wasn't made of rocks). This spectacular movie is extremely close to the spirit of the original Oz books (which are also amazing and fun filled, not dark and scary) with a younger Dorothy (Judy Garland was amazing in The Wizard of Oz though), the characters looking more like the original drawings from the books, and a typical Ozzy plot with the Nome King trying to take over Oz. Although this movie doesn't take you back to the halycon days of MGM with little Judy and the munchkins trapsing down the Yellow Brick Road, you get something a little darker and more subdued(but NOT scary). The film is very entertaining filled with vivid performances by Fairuza Balk as Dorothy, Jean Marsh as Mombi, Nicole Williamson as Dr. Worley and the Nome King, and Piper Laurie as Auntie Em. Hopefully more people will discover the movie and enjoy it for the fine film it is. David Shire's beautiful score in this movie is arguably one of the best scores of the 80's. Dorothy is back home in Kansas and its been 6 months since the tornado carried her and Toto to the Land of Oz. The new house is in the process of being built, Dorothy's Auntie Em and Uncle Henry are very happy to have their niece back. But lately Dorothy can't get to sleep and all she ever talks about is Oz and naturally her kin just think she hit her head and dreamed it up. So they take her to an electrical healing doctor(mind you, this is taking place in the year 1899 at the turn of the century) which promises to heal Dorothy of her dreams of Oz. I don't want to give too much away but she finds herself in Oz and sees that the Nome King has partially conquered Oz and the Emerald City with his accomplice, the evil Princess Mombi. Dorothy with her pet chicken, Billina, Tik-Tok the copper man and Royal Army of Oz, the simple and lovable Jack Pumpkinhead and the flying contraption with the head of a friendly Gump(an ozzy moose-like creature). Together they plan to restore Oz to its former peace and happiness and wait til you watch their adventures! An AWESOME movie recommended for audiences of ALL AGES!
