Summary: I wish I could escape from a math test to go to Fantasia!
Review: It was such a wonderful movie! The graphics were a little week but they are ok for being made in 1984. Falkor is so adorable!I suggest you buy this movie!! It is an exciting Fantasy about a misfit boy named Bastien who finds a magical book called the Neverending Story. And the book is about a young warrior who has to go on a quest to save Fantasia from "The Nothing." You have to find out what happens yourself! I am Only 13, but I think that Fantasy lovers of an age would like this Movie.

Summary: Nostalgia in a Box
Review: I'm always amazed atthe number of people who will watch a movie, then turn to the person sitting next to them, and lament... "Ah, but you know what? The BOOK was better!"

No Kidding! Books often are! With a book, you can eliminate (in your mind) all those details which you dislike... and heighten the ones you like. It's YOUR daydream. With a movie... it's the director's daydream.

That said, I found this movie beautiful, poignant and very magical. Sure, I saw it for the first time as a child, but I'm not a child anymore, and I STILL love it. The characters and costumes are gorgeous, and I love some of the more archetypal characters. Also, the make-up effects and creature designing is first-rate for 1984. (Check out the faces of the racing snail and flying bat, or Valcor...beautiful work!)

All in all, fantasy doesn't come much better. There are but a few TRULY good fantasy movies (for kids) out there, that don't have unpleasant (ie: sex, profanity, nudity) scenes in them... namely, this one, ET, The Hobbit, The Secret of Nimh, The Black Cauldron, The (90s version of) Merlin, etc... Barret Oliver (D.A.R.Y.L) does an excellent job of playing a confused boy yearning both for his dead mother, and a world of fantasy.

If you haven't seen it, and aren't a complete critic who gets joy from finding faults with movies, then please see this. If you can suspend your disbelief and adult contempt of all things childish and playful, that is.

Summary: Defense for the movie
Review: For those who are complaining that the movie doesn't stand towards the book or the book is much better then the movie. Majority of the time isn't any book better than any movie, because you are the one who is making up story and character in your head while the moviemaker (storyteller) is 'feeding' it to you. I know this is true for some of Stephen King's film adaptations, such as It and Dolores Claiborne. I do love both the film and the books, but as always the book gives more detail and allows the reader to become more involved.

I'm reading what people are saying 'Neverending Story didn't do this.....according to the book. And that.....according to the book'. I must admit, I haven't read the book, but know what they are talking about. Only thing though is that the book and the film are their own entity and it's very hard to compile the book into 1 hour 30 minutes or 2 hours. Not enough time.

Personally, I thought this movie was great. Especailly compared to Neverending Story 2 and 3. It has fantastic eye-candy (A.K.A. special effect) a nice dream world (well, other then the fact that it's being destoryed by Nothing), and it keeps me as well as everyone that I show it to interested.

Just dont get too caught up in comparing books with movies because most likely, it won't be 100 percent the same. Instead watch it as a different entity with a different storyteller and a different way of perceiving it - visually.

Summary: My favorite Fantasy film
Review: I loved the opening music for this movie. This is the first and only Neverending Story I'd recommend to any fantasy lover. I wonder if there was a book based on this film. I hope they release this on DVD. If you never watched this you don't know what you're missing. The adventure and dream landscape are quite enchanting. My favorite character is falcor. The plot is original and gripping.

Summary: Use your imagination
Review: Well done film, acting not so hot but a well produced and entertaining picture. The highlight of the film though is the soundtrack, soaring and graceful. It is a perfect blend of classic orchestrations and Giorgio Morodor's electric touch. The film is quite encapsulating with the vastness of Fantasia and the horror of the Nothing. This is the perfect movie for those who are growing up spoiled in a world of computer special effects; this is how it was when I was a kid!

Summary: Neverending joy
Review: This wonderfully portrayed movie based on the book by Michael Ende, is a true work of art. I first saw this movie as a child, and remember being completely overwhelmed by the story. This movie filled me with a sense of awe, and inspired me to believe that every one of us counts. We should never lose sight of our dreams, of lose faith in ourselves. I am now a parent and have shared this beautiful film with my two children. There are few films out there that can convey so many good, strong, moral messages as easily and clearly as The Neverending Story. I believe that everyone who watches this movie or reads the book will benefit from crying and cheering along with the characters.

Summary: You can't knock it
Review: The Neverending Story (movie) is one of my absolute favorites! I saw it when I was little (3 years old) for the first time and found it somewhat scary and confusing, but I was still sucked in and drawn to repeatedly watch it. Now that I am 17, I understand it and it's harder to let go of then Rainbow Brite and the Goonies. Although the technology shows it's age, the sets are still beautiful, and the characters are magical. Noah Hathaway portrays the hero in such a way that kids wish they could be in the story with him. I haven't read the book, but I am not much of a text lover and this movie never ceases to entertain me. People who rate it in comparison to the book need to calm down. I didn't even know there was a book and the movie has been out for 16 years!

Summary: Never appealed to me
Review: THE NEVERENDING STORY never appealed to me, even as a child. I found it a frightening, dark and forboding thing, one that took itself too seriously. I read the book, and found a different STORY, one that was a friendly, pleasant experience.

If you enjoy seeing a young boy being beaten up by a shadow, fair enough, but if your idea of a fantasy is THE WIZARD OF OZ or CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG, where everything really DOES come right at the end, you will agree that THE NEVERENDING STORY is hardly ideal family entertainment.

Summary: Not the book.
Review: The book was not one of the best children's books I'd ever read. I was one of the best fantasy books I'd ever read. I remember being so excited when this movie was finally coming out- an actual live-action rendition of what I'd imagined for so long. But the movie was quite shallow in comparison, and designed for children. The book was designed for adults, though children would find it enjoyable. The sad thing is this could have been so much better, so much more true to the book and philosophical and engaging.

But perhaps the problem was this book should never have been made into a movie. It's uniqueness precluded smooth transition to the screen. Every chapter ends with,"But that is another story." It made you feel like this was real, and continuing on. This was further impacted by the merging of reality and literature that is occurring within the storyline (portrayed in the movie), reminding the reader and the viewer that they are actually reading and watching, just as the main character is, but the main character is drawn into the fantasy, and so maybe, just maybe, we can be too. This feeling however is largely lost in the movie form.

Summary: Oh to be young again.
Review: I saw this film for the first time when I was nine and just recently I watched it again, what this film does is take you back to your childhood and just how open the world was to you back then, this film is magical you will love this film. Some people say this is nothing like the book sure its differnt, but their both equally impressive. Buy this film watch it with your children let them see how vast the human imagination is.
