Summary: May Be Disney's Best
Review: If you are not charmed by this movie you have no heart. The score, the voice talent, and the character animation all make this one of the finest animated films ever, but it is the brilliant and touching lyrics of the late Howard Ashman that set this film apart. This is a movie for all ages to cherish forever.

Summary: Another Disney favorite!
Review: This is another one of Disney's best films! It just cannot be matched - Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea tried and failed - horribly! Disney did a wonderful job adapting this fairytale as well, the original Hans Christian Anderson story was a bit gruesome and... it had a terrible, NOT happily-ever-after ending! This story brings you excitement, fun, and touching scenes that are unforgettable (considering that this was made in the 1980's and I have seen this movie soooooo many times!). This movie is guaranteed satisfactory for all ages (yes, we teens like these "juvenile" films too!). Just listen to the beautiful songs, look at the nice animation, and LIVE the magic! (As corny as that sounds, there's no other way to describe the effect The Little Mermaid will have on you! Watch it today!)

Summary: A great film
Review: This film has class. Glad it was the start of the new Disney generation. Love the music. Great picture quality,no extras. Disney needs to put extras on their discs to make the price worth it.

Summary: Things are better under the sea
Review: Ariel is a 16-year-old mermaid who is real curious about humans and the world out of the sea. Ariel especially likes a prince named Eric. However, her father, King Triton, doesn't like the idea. King Triton says that humans are all the same, that they are mean and they kill fish. Ariel gets tired of her father getting mad at her for surfacing and checking out what's going on above the water. Ariel turns to a sea witch named Ursula for help. Ursula is evil and will do anything she can to add Ariel to her collection of mer-people that she has deceived. Ursula turns Ariel into a human for 3 days. In those 3 days, Eric has to kiss Ariel or Ariel will belong to Ursula and never see Eric or her father again. To help Ariel out, her friends, Sebastian the crab, Flounder, and a seagull follow her on her quest to marry Eric.

"The Little Mermaid" is definitely one of the best of the classic Disney films. It's entertaining, it features some cool animation, and it also has some good songs such as "Under The Sea." I thought the movie was a lot like "Sleeping Beauty" because it features a girl who can sing real well and she falls in love with a prince, but there's a major enemy to get past before the two can get married.

I don't watch cartoons or cartoon movies nearly as much as I used to since I'm not a kid anymore, but I remember all the Disney movies I used to watch when I was a kid, and I have to say that "The Little Mermaid" is definitely one of the best ones. I recommend anybody who likes animated movies to get "The Little Mermaid."

Summary: Great Movie, Bad DVD
Review: I am probably one of the biggest Little Mermaid fans in the world. I saw this movie 8 times in the theaters when it came out in 1989 and then 4 more times when it was released in 1997 (I think). I preordered the original VHS video and picked it up the day it came out, and I watched it that day even though I had gone to the hospital due to a bad head accident that same day which resulted in unpleasant headaches for a couple days. I clipped out the original reviews and stories on the movie from the LA Times. I got the Sebastion Christmas tree ornament from a McDonalds Happy Meal. I bought the Soundtrack CD, and I bought the rerelease of the VHS video, etc, etc...

And now I have this DVD... which is good only in that it is digital (meaning better sound and video quality) and slightly letterboxed. I have a big gripe about this DVD though. First of all, there are absolutely no extra features, unless you count "Region 1 Coded," "interactive menus," and "chapter search." No trailers, no TV spots, no making of documentaries, no interviews, no storyboards, no audio commentary, well, you get the point. Basically I hate this DVD even though I love this movie. The annoying new cover also bothers me, why couldn't they use the original movie poster covers? Perhaps it didn't appeal to the kids enough. I still recommend getting this DVD, since a special edition may never come out or maybe not until you or I are dead.

One last problem with this DVD (and for that matter, all video versions of it also), during the end credits, after "Under the Sea" finishes (rather fades out), the song "Part of Your World" plays, followed by the score. Now, I'm pretty sure that in the theatrical release of this movie, "Under the Sea" is NOT followed by this song, but rather by orchestral score music. This is kind of annoying, but I'm sure you won't mind if you bother buying this DVD at all. My question to Disney is, when will "Beauty and the Beast" and "Aladdin" come out (and Lion King too I guess)??? I think I hate Disney almost as much as I hate George Lucas because of their annoying DVD release policies.

Above all, this movie is GREAT and you will and must cherish it forever!!

Summary: A true five star film.
Review: I enjoy reviewing movies here on Amazon.com. I am pretty critical so I rarely give out five star reviews because I feel there are so few movies that really deserve a perfect score. However, Walt Disney's "The Little Mermaid" is such a film- a genuine, good hearted, crowdpleasing, five star artistic and entertainment masterpiece! I can't think of anything wrong with this movie. The animation was groundbreaking when it was first released, and it is still pretty stellar. The charactizations were perfect. Is there a more winning heroine in Disney's lexicon than Ariel? Who among Disney's villains can rival the dastardly and cunning Ursula the Sea Witch? The story, reworked from the Hans Christian Anderson classic, is heartwarming, romantic, and inspiring. And the music? Personally, I believe the music for "The Little Mermaid" to be quite simply the best ever written for a Disney movie, and the songs "Part of Your World," "Under the Sea," and "Kiss the Girl," rank among the best songs written for ANY movie.

I guess it's obvious that I really love this film. Therefore, it's ironic that when it was first released in 1989 I didn't even think of going to see it in the theaters. Afterall, I was 18 and Disney movies were for kids. It wasn't until my parents purchased the video for my younger siblings that I first saw this masterpiece and fell in love with it. It now ranks among my favorite movies. Over the years I've gotten some ribbing from friends over my attachment to this movie, but I don't care. A great movie is a great movie regardless if it is a animated feature or not, and "The Little Mermaid" is a great movie!

Summary: Magical entertainment for the whole family
Review: "The Little Mermaid" is a smashing blend of romance, action, music, and superb Disney animation.

We all know the story, don't we? Little Ariel is a mermaid who wants to be part of the world beyond the sea, but her father (the king of an undersea nation) wants her "under the sea", where he thinks she belongs. Ariel falls in love with a human prince and trades her lovely singing voice to the evil Sea-Witch so that she can be with him.

Will Ariel wed the handsome prince, make her dad understand what she wants, and defeat the evil Sea-Witch? It's a Disney flick, folks...that's all one need say.

The film is a delight from start to finish, but I have to give special mention the music and songs (by Alan Menken and the late Howard Ashman), which span yearning ("Part of Your World"), salesmanship ("Under the Sea"), and barely-concealed evil ("Poor Unfortunate Souls"). The score and musical numbers are a sheer delight (and the ones for Ashman and Menken's next project, "Beauty and the Beast", are even better), and you'll be humming them for weeks after seeing this film.

It also bears mentioning that unlike many other Disney cartoons, in which the violence level is quite high for a G-rated film, the violence in "The Little Mermaid" is very restrained; of all the recent Disney films, this is the one best suited for young children.

And if your young kids are like my daughter, they'll soon be telling you they want to be mermaids, just like Ariel.

Enjoy!
