Summary: Faithful To The Book
Review: Rarely is a screenplay so faithful to the original book as The Princess Bride. Written by William Goldman in the 70's, he's rumored to have waited years for the right director, even selling and repurchasing the rights to assure the perfect transition from the written page. He found his director in Rob Reiner.

In the book, every character is blessed with being the best at his craft, or the most of whatever his or her defining characteristic is; Buttercup the world's most beautiful woman, Humperdinck the greatest hunter, Inigo the best swordsman, Vinzinni the smartest. The casting of the film follows this beautifully, and you find yourself believing that these characters are indeed the pinnacle of their talents in this faery-tale world.

Buttercup is The Princess Bride, a common girl chosen for a wife by a corrupt prince. He wants to murder her and frame another country's government in order to start a war. His plans aren't easily accomplished, as Buttercup's true love Wesley and company attempt to stop the prince cold, and recover Buttercup.

There are simply no misfires in the entire film. Performances are perfect...Cary Elwes as Wesley is more Errol Flynn than Errol Flynn was. Billy Crystal as Miracle Max is hilarious. And it's easy to see why the talented Robin Wright (now Robin Wright Penn) was chosen for the role of the world's most beautiful woman. Of particular note is a tremendous performance by Mandy Patinkin (Chicago Hope, Yentl) as Inigo Montoya.

Even the action scenes are amazing. Elwes and Patinkin reportedly spent several weeks with a master swordsman to learn their incredibly complex and massively entertaining duel. And Patinkin's end fight with bad guy Christopher Guest (as the "Six Fingered Man" Jerome) takes the cake for action-inspired goosebumps.

The Princess Bride is a modern classic; funny without being silly, touching without being maudlin, exciting without being showy. This kind of magic is seldom captured on film. I recommend it most highly.

Summary: Bring On The Criterion Collection DVD Version!
Review: There is nothing about this film I could possibly say that has not been said already. So let me just tell you what to expect from this MGM DVD. It's not anamorphic and there are no English subtitles (something I wanted desperately, to understand some dialogue during the sword fight between Inigo and The Man In Black). The only difference to the film itself, other than a better looking picture, is the opening logos are changed from 20th Century Fox, to MGM. The Criterion Collection had a very impressive laserdisc out many years ago that contains all the extras you could hope to want including: audio commentary with Rob Reiner, novelist William Goldman, producer Andrew Scheinman and actor's Billy Crystal and Peter Falk. A second audio track of Rob Reiner reading excerpts from the novel, plus some behind the scenes footage, a production scrapbook, and design sketches were also included. In fact, the irony is that the one bonus you do get on the MGM DVD, the original theatrical trailer, is the only bonus not included on the Criterion edition. Basically it's because the trailer did not do the film justice and is one reason why this film was not a hit in theaters. Only later, on video, did it find it's audience. But it's still nice to have, just the same. There has been word that MGM is planning their own special edition DVD later this spring, so I'm not sure what Criterion will do. This Is Spinal Tap, another Rob Reiner film, which was first released by Criterion on DVD, was discontinued after a few months, only to be replaced by a Special Edition by, you guessed it, MGM, but with different features than it's predecessor. One can only guess what's going to happen with Criterion's version. Will MGM's be the only one to be released or will Criterion also give us their version on DVD? Well, if they don't the laserdisc may become a collector's item. If they do I'm sure there will be a huge debate over which one is the better Special Edition. Only time will tell, but in the end, the movie is still a classic no matter what happens.

Summary: REALY FUNNY!
Review: This movie is sooo funny! I liked it so much! My parents think it's like Monte Pithon and the Holy Grail;I wouldn't know, cuz I haven't seen that movie. The jokes are so frequent, you don't get them all with one time through! Wow, I was laughing soo hard the first time I saw it; now it's my fave movie. YOu'll love it!

Summary: Simply fun film, poor DVD
Review: This movie is a fun fairy tale that both adults and children will love. I got this DVD because I love the film, but the DVD is lacking. No extras even English subtitles which would have helped because some of the accents are hard to understand particularly Andre the Giant. Rumors about an enhanced DVD coming out so you may want to wait.

Summary: A great movie to watch over and over.
Review: This is one of those movies that you can watch over and over again, and still find it very entertaining. With so many movies of the time and today taking themselves so seriously, it is nice to have a movie like this that captures the true essence of the fantasty story and plays it out to us with characters that are both memorable and entertaining. This is one movie that you can watch and enjoy with the whole family. I am happy that this has come out in DVD, as I can now retire my worn out VHS version with one that will last forever.
